To add Telegram’s extra login password, open Settings > Privacy and Security > Two-Step Verification and follow the prompts. Add and verify a recovery email if you can: it can help if you forget the password. Keep that email account secure, because Telegram’s extra password and the login code work together to protect sign-ins on new devices.
What Telegram 2-Step Verification adds
Telegram calls this feature 2-Step Verification in its official FAQ. When it is enabled, signing in on a new device requires both a login code and the additional password. The code may arrive in Telegram on another connected device; do not assume it will always be sent by SMS. Telegram’s FAQ explains the current feature, while Telegram’s April 8, 2015 announcement describes its original purpose as adding a password to the login code.

How to turn on Telegram 2-Step Verification
- Open Settings. In Telegram, go to Settings.
- Open Privacy and Security. Select Privacy and Security in Settings.
- Choose Two-Step Verification. Follow the prompts to create the additional password.
- Add recovery details. If offered, set a password hint and enter a recovery email address. Complete the verification Telegram sends for that email.
- Store the password safely. Keep it somewhere you can retrieve it without exposing it to other people.
Telegram documents the menu path as Settings > Privacy and Security > 2-Step Verification. Exact labels and screen layouts can vary by app version or client, so follow the closest matching setting in your app. Telegram’s technical documentation confirms that a recovery email must be verified.

A verified recovery email can help you regain access if you forget the additional password. Secure the mailbox with a strong, unique password and turn on its own two-step verification when available. The Telegram password and the email account are separate protections; losing control of the mailbox can weaken your recovery options.

Telegram’s 2015 announcement warned that forgetting the password could prevent access to messages from other devices. Treat the password as essential login information rather than something you can count on recovering immediately.
If you forget the extra password
You configured and verified a recovery email
Use Telegram’s password-recovery option and follow the prompts to request a recovery code by email. The available recovery flow depends on your account and client; Telegram’s API documentation describes email-based recovery when an email has been configured.

You are still logged in but cannot remember the password
Telegram’s technical documentation describes a password-reset request from an already logged-in session that includes a seven-day server-side wait. This is documented technical behavior, not a guarantee that every user will see the same screens or be able to recover access immediately. Follow the options Telegram presents in your app.

The available official material does not establish a universal instant-recovery route for this situation. Avoid signing out of any device that remains logged in until you have checked Telegram’s in-app recovery options.

How this differs from passkeys and an app passcode
- 2-Step Verification password: An additional password used with the login code when signing in on a new device.
- Passkey: A separate login method Telegram describes as usable instead of an SMS code. It is not the same as the 2-Step Verification password.
- App passcode: A lock for access to Telegram on a device. Telegram recommends setting one under Privacy and Security; it does not replace the account’s extra login password.
For sensitive conversations, Telegram also advises considering Secret Chats. Account verification does not protect an unlocked or compromised device. See Telegram’s FAQ for its guidance on passkeys, app passcodes, and Secret Chats.
