Allianz Australia Insurance Limited issues the policy and assesses and pays claims, while Bank of Melbourne arranges the insurance and says it does not guarantee it. Whether it suits you depends on your contents sum insured, item limits, excess, optional cover needs and the terms on your policy schedule.
What does Bank of Melbourne Contents Insurance cover for renters?
The policy is designed to insure contents at the insured address. Bank of Melbourne’s examples include furniture, appliances, clothing, carpets, shoes and handbags, as well as some outdoor belongings such as BBQs, outdoor furniture and play equipment. Standard maximum limits apply to some item categories; the insurer may allow higher replacement values to be nominated for certain items. Check the PDS and your schedule for the categories and limits that apply to you.

The Bank’s cover explainer lists these insured events, subject to policy definitions, exclusions, excesses and limits:
- Fire and smoke, including bushfire and grassfire
- Storm, cyclone, rainwater and run-off
- Water or other liquid escaping from specified sources
- Theft and burglary
- Explosion, lightning, impact, vandalism or malicious damage
- Accidental breakage of glass or ceramic items
- Earthquake, tsunami, riot or civil commotion
- Flood
For cyclone, flood, grassfire and bushfire, a 72-hour exclusion can apply after you first take out or increase cover. The PDS sets out exceptions, including some renewal and uninterrupted replacement-cover situations, so this is not a general 72-hour waiting period for every claim. Bank of Melbourne’s cover explanation and the applicable PDS describe the conditions.

What happens if a renter damages a fixture?
The Bank’s renter-specific explanation says accidental breakage of a fixed glass or ceramic item—such as a window, sink, cooking surface or toilet—is addressed only if you are legally liable as a tenant to pay for the breakage. That is different from insuring the building itself: this contents policy is not the owner’s building cover. Whether liability applies in a particular situation depends on the circumstances and policy terms.
The Allianz-issued PDS also says, “If you’re renting all of your home out to tenants, cover is not available under a Home and Contents Insurance policy.” That statement concerns an owner renting out the entire home, not a renter insuring their own belongings. The PDS directs landlords to Landlord Insurance for the investment property and landlord-provided contents.

Which optional covers should renters consider?
| Option | What it is for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portable contents | Optional additional-cost cover for belongings taken away from the insured address. | The Bank says laptops, tablets, mobile phones, smart watches and wearable devices must be listed individually for this cover. A screen or glass crack alone is not covered. |
| Accidental damage | Optional cover for sudden, unforeseen and unintended damage beyond the named insured events; the Bank gives spilling red wine on a lounge or carpet as an example. | Review the PDS for the covered circumstances, exclusions and excess. |
| Motor burnout | Optional cover for household electrical motors damaged by electrical current, with a refrigerator, freezer and washing machine given as examples. | Check the policy wording and whether the option is relevant to your household. |
Optional cover adds to the premium. The reviewed product information does not state a standard price for these options; the amount depends on your quote and policy details.

Choose a sum insured that reflects the replacement cost of the belongings you want covered, rather than the amount you originally paid or what you could sell them for. The policy limits payment to the lesser of the loss and the sum insured, and item sublimits may also apply. Bank of Melbourne offers a contents calculator as a guide, but your own room-by-room inventory is a useful check against overlooking clothing, electronics, kitchenware or other everyday possessions.

The Allianz PDS includes legal liability cover with contents insurance. The Bank’s online Key Facts Sheet (KFS), prepared on 1 September 2021, summarizes a limit of $20 million per accident or related series. Because that summary sheet is dated, confirm the limit and conditions in the PDS and schedule applicable to your policy rather than relying on the KFS figure alone.
How do excesses, premium and claims affect the decision?
Compare the basic excess and any additional excesses shown in your quote and schedule. The PDS says customers may select from available excesses and that a higher excess generally lowers the premium. It also describes an additional $250 earthquake/tsunami excess. Check which excess would apply to the kinds of claims most relevant to your household.

When comparing another contents policy, use the same address, household, sum insured and options, then compare the actual quote and the policy wording—not just the headline premium. Focus on item limits, relevant excesses, flood and storm terms, theft and water damage, tenant liability for fixtures, portable cover, exclusions, waiting periods, evidence requirements and how claims are settled.
