As of October 11, 2026, the verified announcements covered here include approximately 16,000 roles at Amazon and approximately 4,800 at Microsoft. Xbox separately outlined a plan to reduce its team by approximately 3,200 during FY27, but that division figure overlaps Microsoft’s announcement and must not be added to it. Apple and TikTok have no company-confirmed 2026 totals verified here, while Oracle’s reported workforce decline is not the same as a 2026 layoff announcement.

Updated October 11, 2026. This is a partial tracker of figures that can be attributed to the cited sources, not an exhaustive count of every technology-sector job loss in 2026.

Verified 2026 announcements and figures

Date Company and scope Measure and number Geography and context Source and stated rationale
January 2026 Amazon, company-wide Approximately 16,000 roles affected in an announced cut. Amazon said most US-based employees would have 90 days to seek another internal role. Transition support would follow for employees who could not or chose not to move into another role. Amazon’s announcement said the cuts completed organizational changes discussed in October, with a focus on reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy.
July 6, 2026 Microsoft, company-wide Approximately 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its global workforce. Microsoft said the changes mostly affected Commercial and Xbox. The Xbox plan below is a division-specific figure and overlaps this company-wide announcement. Microsoft’s announcement said the eliminated roles were not being replaced by AI, while noting that AI is changing how work gets done.
July 6, 2026; planned across FY27 Xbox, division-specific Approximately 1,600 role eliminations on July 6; approximately 3,200 team reductions expected throughout FY27. The planned total includes the July 6 eliminations and overlaps Microsoft’s company-wide figure. Do not add the Xbox plan to Microsoft’s 4,800. Xbox leader Asha Sharma’s message described a restructure across Xbox units and said four studios would transition to new management.

Why the numbers cannot be added into one total

The figures above describe different scopes and time frames. Microsoft’s 4,800 is a company-wide announcement; Xbox’s 3,200 is a planned division-level reduction across FY27 that overlaps the Microsoft announcement. Adding them would count some roles twice. Amazon’s January figure is a separate company-wide announcement, but these entries still do not establish a complete industry total.

  • Announced cuts: roles the company says are being eliminated, such as Amazon’s January announcement or Microsoft’s July 6 announcement.
  • Planned reductions: future or phased changes, such as Xbox’s approximately 3,200 planned FY27 team reduction. A plan is not a count of cuts already completed.
  • Workforce decline: a change in employee count over a period. It does not, by itself, establish how many layoffs were announced or when they occurred.

Oracle: a reported workforce decline, not a confirmed 2026 layoff total

TechCrunch reported that Oracle disclosed a decline of 21,000 employees over the prior 12 months in an annual filing. That is a year-over-year workforce change, not necessarily 21,000 layoffs announced in 2026. TechCrunch quoted the filing as saying AI adoption and deployment had resulted, and could continue to result, in workforce reductions. The figure should therefore be kept separate from dated layoff announcements; the underlying SEC filing was not independently verified for this tracker. TechCrunch’s running list reports the filing and its wording.

Apple, TikTok and Meta: what is and is not confirmed here

Apple and TikTok

No current, company-confirmed 2026 cut totals for Apple or TikTok were verified in the sources available for this update. No figures are listed rather than filling the gap with unconfirmed reports.

Meta

Coverage surfaced a claim of an 8,000-role reduction, roughly 10% of Meta’s workforce, in 2026. The official primary announcement was not verified here, so the claim is a lead—not a company-confirmed tracker entry.

Industry-wide context: a dated tally, not a full-year total

Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported 52,050 announced technology job cuts through March 2026. That figure is limited to announcements through March; it is not a full-year 2026 total or a count through October. Read the Challenger report.

How to read a running layoffs tracker

A useful entry identifies the announcement date, the company and business unit, whether the figure is announced, planned or inferred from workforce data, its geography and source. It should also flag any overlap with a broader company announcement. Those distinctions matter especially when companies discuss AI: Microsoft explicitly said its July 6 role eliminations were not being replaced by AI, while Oracle’s filing language, as reported by TechCrunch, connected workforce reductions to AI adoption. Neither statement should be generalized to other companies’ cuts.
