CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION is a worthwhile way to play Zack Fair’s story on Switch 2, especially if you value smoother action and sharper presentation. Reviewers report a choice between a 60 FPS Performance mode and a higher-fidelity 30 FPS Graphics mode. But it is a separate digital edition, and Nintendo says Switch saves do not transfer—so owners of the original Switch release should weigh the upgrade against starting over.
Is Crisis Core Reunion on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo’s US store lists the Nintendo Switch 2 edition as a digital release dated September 9, 2026. The download is listed at 14.9 GB, and the game supports handheld, tabletop, and TV play. It requires a Switch 2; Nintendo says this edition cannot be played on the original Switch. Nintendo’s US store listing identifies Square Enix as publisher.

The game itself is a remaster of the original PSP action RPG, not a new installment. It follows Zack Fair, a Shinra SOLDIER operative, seven years before FINAL FANTASY VII. His investigation into the disappearance of Genesis Rhapsodos brings him into a story featuring Angeal, Sephiroth, Cloud, Aerith, and other familiar characters. Square Enix lists an HD graphics overhaul, remastered soundtrack, reimagined interface, and updated real-time combat among the remaster’s changes. Square Enix’s game overview describes the premise and features.

What do the Switch 2 graphics modes change?
The choice is essentially smoother response versus higher image quality. TheSixthAxis reports that Performance mode targets 60 FPS at reduced resolution, while Graphics mode runs at 30 FPS with higher resolution and fidelity. Its review also describes improved loading compared with the earlier edition. TheSixthAxis’ Switch 2 review treats the new release as a visual and frame-rate improvement.

In an October 4, 2026 review, Final Weapon reports that Performance mode runs at a locked 60 FPS in both handheld and docked play. That is the reviewer’s observation, not an official Square Enix specification; mode performance should be understood as review findings rather than a published guarantee. Final Weapon’s review also notes that the port does not resolve some of the game’s underlying faults.
For context, Square Enix’s technical notice for the original game lists Nintendo Switch TV and handheld modes at 1280 × 720 and 30 FPS. The company says figures in that table are upper limits for variable frame rates. Those numbers describe the original Switch release, not Switch 2. Square Enix’s technical notice is dated November 26, 2023.

Which mode should you choose?
- Performance: Choose it if responsive combat and smoother movement matter most, particularly during action-heavy play.
- Graphics: Choose it if you prefer higher resolution and visual fidelity and are comfortable with the reported 30 FPS presentation.
The right choice depends on whether you notice frame-rate fluidity or image detail more. The reports support a clear trade-off, but do not establish an exact Switch 2 resolution for either mode.
Is the remaster still a good game?
Its strongest reason to play is the focused character story: Zack’s optimism and ambition give the prequel a different center of gravity from FINAL FANTASY VII. The action-RPG structure and real-time combat make it more direct than a traditional turn-based entry, while its familiar cast connects the story to the wider series. The remaster’s visual, audio, interface, and combat updates make the PSP original more accessible on modern hardware.

The Switch 2 release improves the presentation and performance options, but it does not change the game into a new story or remove the core weaknesses reviewers still identify. If you already know the original and mainly want new narrative content, this is not that; if you want to revisit Zack’s story with a smoother option, the upgrade is more relevant.
Can you transfer a Switch save to Switch 2?
No. Nintendo explicitly says save data is incompatible between the original Switch and Switch 2 editions. Buying the newer version does not let you continue an existing Switch playthrough, so returning players should expect a separate run. Nintendo’s product page states the compatibility restriction.

What is different from the original Switch version?
The original Switch release is a separate product, launched December 13, 2022. Nintendo UK lists its download at 14.4 GB and identifies a Game Card edition. The Switch 2 release is listed by Nintendo US as digital and 14.9 GB. Nintendo says the older version and the new one do not share saves, and the Switch 2 edition itself does not run on original Switch hardware.
| Edition | Release date | Listed download size | Format information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 | September 9, 2026 | 14.9 GB | Digital, according to Nintendo US |
| Original Switch | December 13, 2022 | 14.4 GB | Nintendo UK lists a Game Card edition |
The size difference is the stores’ listed download sizes; it is not, by itself, a measure of visual quality or content. The available official listings establish a physical Game Card for the older Switch edition, but do not establish a physical Switch 2 release.

Is the Switch 2 version worth buying if you own the Switch version?
It is easiest to recommend to someone who has not played the game and wants the better-performing version on Switch 2. For existing owners, the case is narrower: reviewers report improved visuals, loading, and a 60 FPS option, but Nintendo’s save incompatibility means you cannot carry your progress across. Whether that is worth another purchase depends on how much you value the technical improvements and whether you are willing to replay from the beginning.
Nintendo’s US listing is digital. The cited official listings do not verify a physical Switch 2 edition, so buyers looking specifically for a Switch 2 Game Card should confirm availability with a current retailer before purchasing.
