Amazon AI chips are custom processors designed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) for use in its cloud infrastructure. The term most often refers to Trainium, for AI training and inference, and Inferentia, for inference. Graviton is also an AWS-designed chip family, but it is a general-purpose CPU—not a dedicated AI accelerator. These are cloud services accessed through AWS, not retail chips for installation in a home PC.
What does “Amazon AI chips” mean?
It is an informal umbrella term for AWS-designed silicon used to run cloud computing workloads, particularly AI. AWS offers access to these processors through Amazon EC2 instances and related services rather than selling them as consumer PC components. Amazon’s custom-chip overview and AWS EC2 instance documentation describe the chips in that cloud context.

The phrase can refer to different chip families, so it is useful to distinguish the task each is designed to serve:

| Family | Role | How to think about it |
|---|---|---|
| Trainium | AI training and inference | A specialized accelerator for AI workloads. |
| Inferentia | AI inference | A specialized accelerator for running trained models. |
| Graviton | General-purpose cloud computing | An AWS CPU that can handle application and supporting workloads; it is not a synonym for an AI accelerator. |
AWS outlines these roles in its Trainium, Inferentia, and EC2 instance-type materials.

How are training and inference different?
Training
Training is the process of teaching a model from data. It can require substantial computing resources, particularly when models or datasets are large. AWS positions Trainium for training as well as inference workloads.
Inference
Inference is the use of a trained model to produce an output—for example, generating a response or making a prediction. AWS positions Inferentia specifically for inference and offers access through EC2 Inf instances. Developers use the AWS Neuron software development kit to develop and deploy workloads on these accelerators.

A chip is only one part of the computing environment. An AI workload also depends on the server, networking, software, and cloud services around it. AWS describes Trainium as part of an integrated cloud system, while EC2 instances provide the practical route to using its silicon.

CPU, GPU, and accelerator are not interchangeable labels. A CPU such as Graviton handles a broad range of general computing tasks. GPUs and specialized accelerators are designed for workloads that benefit from parallel processing. An AI application may use different kinds of compute for model training, inference, and the ordinary services that support the application.
How should you evaluate an AWS AI chip?
The chip name alone does not establish whether an option will be faster or cheaper for a particular project. Compare the intended task, model and software compatibility, required scale, latency needs, instance configuration, and total cost. AWS’s performance and price-performance statements are vendor claims tied to particular comparisons; they should not be read as guarantees for every model or workload. A useful comparison keeps the workload and system configurations as similar as possible.

For example, a team choosing hardware to train a model should evaluate Trainium against suitable alternatives for that training workload. A team serving a trained model should assess inference options, including Inferentia where its software and instance setup fit. General-purpose application services may instead call for CPU capacity such as Graviton. The appropriate choice depends on the complete workload, not simply on which chip has “AI” in its description.
What does Amazon report about its chip business?
In a company article dated July 31, 2026, Amazon reported that its custom-silicon business had exceeded a $25 billion annual revenue run rate. That is Amazon’s reported figure for its broader custom silicon business—not independently verified revenue from AI chips alone. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy described the company as “unusually well-positioned” because of its AI chips and CPUs; that is an executive’s promotional assessment, not an independent performance finding. Amazon’s company article provides the statement and its context.
