There is no solid evidence of a UK-wide rush for damaged PS5 consoles at £480. A GameGPU article published on 11 October 2026 describes one anonymous customer buying a PS5 for that amount, but says the damage was to the box: the console itself was in perfect condition. The article names no retailer and provides no sales figures or independent confirmation. GameGPU’s report
What the £480 story actually claims
GameGPU’s account is a single anecdote, not proof that UK shoppers broadly are snapping up damaged consoles. It says major UK retailers were seeing increased PS5 sales, then describes a customer purchasing the last console at an unnamed British chain’s branch for £480. The box was heavily dented in transit; the article says the hardware was undamaged. It does not identify the customer or retailer, show a receipt, or quantify sales. GameGPU’s report

That distinction matters: “damaged PS5” suggests faulty hardware, while the reported case concerns damaged packaging. The evidence supports neither a damaged-console bargain nor a verified nationwide trend.

Why £480 may sound familiar
PlayStation’s UK online shop lists a certified refurbished PS5 Slim for £479.99. That is a separate official listing, not evidence that the customer in the GameGPU story bought a refurbished or damaged-box console. A refurbished listing and a transit-damaged package are not interchangeable explanations for the anecdote. PlayStation UK refurbished consoles

What is confirmed about GTA VI and PS5
PlayStation lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and PS5 Pro with a UK release date of 19 November 2026. Its product page describes a single-player game and says it is not playable on PS4. It lists the Standard Edition at £69.99 and the Ultimate Edition at £89.99 at the time checked; prices can change, so verify the listing before buying. PlayStation’s GTA VI page
Rockstar says the physical retail version will contain a digital download code, not a disc, and is expected to be available from 12 November 2026 to support preloading. The code is subject to platform-account region restrictions. Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the country matching the platform account; its listed PlayStation code region for UK buyers is the United Kingdom. Do the reported sales figures verify the story?
No. GTA6 Life reported Nielsen IQ figures of a 33% increase in UK PS5 sales and a 34% increase in UK Xbox Series X|S sales in the week of the 27 August 2026 GTA VI Extended Look. The figures were reported second-hand, and unit volumes were not published. They concern overall weekly console sales, not damaged packaging, consoles sold for £480, or the reason individual buyers made a purchase. They do not corroborate GameGPU’s specific anecdote. What to check before buying a PS5 for GTA VI
- Condition: distinguish a damaged outer box from damaged hardware, and ask the seller to state the console’s condition clearly.
- Model and storage: compare the exact PS5 model and storage included in each listing; the official refurbished price cited here is for a PS5 Slim.
- Price and protections: check the current price along with the retailer’s return terms and any warranty. The cited listings do not establish comparable warranty terms across new, refurbished, and used consoles.
- Availability: verify stock and terms with the seller before travelling or placing an order; the anecdote does not establish broader availability.
PlayStation also says GTA VI uses DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Those features are part of the game’s controller support; the cited information does not mean every buyer needs an extra controller. PlayStation’s GTA VI page
