For a classroom materials drive, DonorsChoose arranges reviewed purchases and delivery to school; AdoptAClassroom.org gives educators marketplace credit; and GoFundMe transfers fundraiser proceeds to a bank account. Their fee models and controls differ, but none overrides your school or district’s rules. Check local approval and student-consent requirements before publishing a campaign.
How the three platforms handle classroom fundraising
| Platform | How resources reach the classroom | What to know about control and approval |
|---|---|---|
| DonorsChoose | Teachers request specific items. The platform reviews projects, then orders materials and ships them to a verified school address; it does not give cash to teachers. | Only teachers at verified schools can post projects. The platform says materials belong to the public school classroom. If a teacher changes schools, materials stay at the original school unless the principal agrees they can move. DonorsChoose administrator guidance |
| AdoptAClassroom.org | Educators receive account credit to select supplies from its marketplace; goods are shipped to school. The credit is not cash. | Its teacher Classroom Page and public-facing School Page are different programs with different approval requirements. Purchased goods are school property. School Program FAQ |
| GoFundMe | A general-purpose fundraiser whose personal-campaign proceeds can transfer to the organizer’s personal bank account or an associated organization’s account. | The reviewed sources do not establish classroom-specific purchasing controls or school approval. Confirm who may collect and spend funds before using it for a school campaign. GoFundMe fundraiser types |
Which teacher fundraising platform has the lowest fees?
There is no single apples-to-apples “lowest fee” answer: DonorsChoose and AdoptAClassroom.org route funding through classroom-resource programs, while GoFundMe handles general-purpose fundraiser payments. A suggested donor contribution is not the same as an automatic transaction deduction, and the GoFundMe figure below applies only to a US personal fundraiser.

| Platform | Fee details in the cited official pages | What the figure does—and does not—mean |
|---|---|---|
| DonorsChoose | Its financial page describes a suggested 15% optional donor contribution, which donors may reduce or remove, and a standard 1.5% processing fee in a project-cost example. It also describes payment-specific processor costs. | The 15% is not an unavoidable amount taken from every donation or a teacher cash payout. The 1.5% is given in a project-cost example; actual transaction context matters. DonorsChoose financials |
| AdoptAClassroom.org | The donor FAQ says classroom and school donations have no mandatory fees and educators receive 100% of donations. | This describes its donation-fee claim, not every possible cost. Purchases outside the marketplace may be subject to a separate administrative fee; check the current Teacher Choice Purchase policy before using that route. Donor FAQ |
| GoFundMe | For a US individual/personal fundraiser, current official help and pricing pages state no fee to start or manage and a transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 deducted per donation. Donor tips are optional. | This fee is scoped to US personal fundraisers. Country, recurring donations, nonprofit campaigns, and GoFundMe Pro may have different terms. The organizer cannot see whether a donor added a tip. GoFundMe fee details and pricing |
DonorsChoose also reports that an average of 75% of project funds comes from outside a teacher’s personal network. That is a platform-reported average, not a promise about any individual project. DonorsChoose administrator guidance
What happens after a campaign is funded?
DonorsChoose: reviewed requests and direct delivery
Teachers list requested resources, and DonorsChoose reviews projects and arranges the order and shipment to the school. This is the clearest fit when the goal is a defined supply list and the teacher should not receive cash. The platform says its records identify what was shipped and when, and principals can receive shipment alerts. Materials belong to the public school classroom, not automatically to the individual teacher. Administrator guidance
#1 Best Overall
AdoptAClassroom.org: marketplace account credit
Donations become AdoptAClassroom.org account credit that educators use to choose supplies from a marketplace of more than 20 education and school-supply vendors. The organization says funds are available immediately and educators have up to one year to spend them. Items are shipped to school and are school property. An outside-marketplace Teacher Choice purchase follows separate rules, so review its current policy before assuming the same fee or process applies. For teachers and Teacher Choice Purchase policy
GoFundMe: bank transfers under a general-purpose model
For US fundraisers, GoFundMe distinguishes personal and nonprofit campaign types. Personal proceeds can transfer to the organizer’s personal bank account or an associated organization’s bank account; nonprofit proceeds are routed to the nonprofit through the described payment channel. That flexibility leaves the organizer and school needing to settle who controls the money, who buys materials, where items are delivered, and who owns them. Fundraiser types
Can teachers use DonorsChoose without principal approval?
DonorsChoose verifies teachers and reviews project requests, but that is platform review—not permission from a school or district. Its terms require teachers to comply with school and district policies and to obtain necessary permissions for content. The available guidance does not establish a universal rule that principal approval is—or is not—required; local policy controls. DonorsChoose terms
AdoptAClassroom.org makes a distinction between its programs: its FAQ says teachers do not need platform permission to create a Classroom Page, but they must follow school and district rules. A public-facing School Page for school fundraising requires an approval letter from the district or an appropriate senior-level executive. A non-public-facing School Page cannot be used for crowdfunding, though it may provide access to other funding opportunities. AdoptAClassroom School Program FAQ
District rules vary. A 2024 North Carolina School Boards Association report records responses from 109 districts to a question about whether policy required principal or superintendent approval: 40.4% said yes, 56.9% said their district had no policy, and 2.7% said no. Those respondent figures are not a national estimate and do not determine the rule for any particular school. NCSBA Schools and Crowdfunding report

Are classroom fundraiser donations private?
Do not assume that a classroom campaign is private simply because the platform has privacy safeguards. DonorsChoose says teachers’ chosen display names and school information may appear publicly, and classroom photos may appear with a project or when shared on social media. Its terms prohibit posting student pictures or information without express written permission from a parent or guardian; its privacy policy also requires prior written permission for student photos. The platform reviews projects and classroom photos, but that review does not replace school rules or consent. DonorsChoose privacy policy, terms
AdoptAClassroom.org describes student privacy protections in its school program and says it tracks purchases. The available GoFundMe information concerns its general fundraising model, not classroom-specific privacy protections. For any service, avoid identifiable student names, details, or images unless the permissions required by the platform and your school are documented. AdoptAClassroom School Program FAQ
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to confirm with your school before launching
Ask a principal or district administrator for the current rule before creating a public campaign. Confirm:
- Which fundraising platforms are approved, and whether this campaign needs advance approval.
- Whether administrators must review the campaign text, images, or requested items.
- What written consent is required for student photos or identifying information.
- Whether donations may enter a teacher’s personal account or must go through a school or nonprofit account.
- Who owns donated or purchased materials, and whether they can move if a teacher changes schools.
- Which delivery addresses, purchasing procedures, gift rules, or conflict-of-interest policies apply.
These checks matter even on a platform that verifies teachers, reviews projects, or ships supplies directly to school: the platform’s process does not grant district authorization.
