In TechRadar’s review, the phone was used on and off as a main handset over a month for calls, browsing, ebooks, comics, photos, and video—not in a controlled lab comparison. The review’s verdict is compelling for readers, but less so for people who prioritize vivid video, gaming, or ambitious photography.
What makes the NXTPAPER 70 Pro different?
The defining feature is TCL’s 6.9-inch NXTPAPER 4.0 display, paired with a physical NXTPAPER Key. It offers ordinary color alongside Color Paper, Ink Paper, and Max Ink modes. The matte finish reduces reflections, and TechRadar found that websites, ebooks, and digital comics were especially comfortable to read on.

“Paper-like” describes the screen’s matte treatment and software modes; it does not mean this is an E Ink phone. Max Ink is a monochrome reading-focused mode, while the other modes let you choose a less or more conventional display presentation. TCL announced the phone on January 5, 2026, and says the NXTPAPER Key switches among Color Paper, Ink Paper, and Max Ink.

That is a manufacturer claim, not independent evidence of a medical benefit. TCL’s line that the screen “adapts like real paper, easing long hours without the usual strain” is marketing language, not proof of a health outcome.

How does it feel to use for reading, video, and games?
Reading is the strongest case
The matte finish cuts glare, and the review reports that reading web pages, ebooks, and comics worked particularly well. If you spend long stretches reading on a phone and want less reflection than a glossy screen typically gives, this is the reason to consider the NXTPAPER 70 Pro.
Video looks better in normal color mode
Video remains watchable, but TechRadar found that the paper-like finish compromises the best media image quality. Switching back to a normal color mode improves the picture. If bright, vivid video or games are your main use, compare traditional-display phones before choosing this one.

TechRadar described everyday performance as smooth and solid for the price, while cautioning that people accustomed to flagship phones should moderate expectations. The review found the camera adequate for everyday snapshots rather than a strength for ambitious photography.
How long does the battery last?
TechRadar measured 10 hours and 55 minutes of continuous video playback in its test and reported more than a day of standard use. Those are that publication’s test results, not a promise of the same runtime for every owner.

TCL claims up to seven days of reading and up to 26 days on standby in Max Ink mode. These are manufacturer figures for that mode, not TechRadar’s independent everyday-use measurements. Max Ink’s monochrome, reading-focused presentation is the trade-off for those claimed runtimes.
How much does it cost, and which storage option should you check?
Prices vary by storage tier, retailer, and promotion. TechRadar reported a US price of $329.99 for the 128GB option, $379.99 for 256GB, and $429.99 for 512GB in its 2026 review. TCL’s current US store listing displays different prices for multiple variants, and promotions can change the amount payable. Check the live listing for your region and confirm the storage capacity before buying.

Which buyers should consider another phone?
For vivid media and gaming
Compare a conventional-display budget phone if you mainly watch movies or play games and want the strongest color presentation. TechRadar names the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G as an alternative to consider for that kind of use.
Best Value

Its Eye Care Assistant adjusts brightness and color temperature to your environment and gently reminds you to take breaks
- 4 Display Modes for Any Moment: With the NXTPAPER Key, the TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G phone lets you switch display modes with ease. Standard Mode is crisp for daily use, Color Paper Mode is softer for comics and digital art, Ink Paper Mode supports comfortable reading, and Max Ink Mode creates an e-reader-like experience with longer battery life
- Built-In AI Assistant for Daily Tasks: The TCL phone unlocked comes with an intelligent AI assistant ready to help translate text, summarize information, transcribe audio, and organize ideas. Whether for meetings, studying, writing, or planning, it boosts productivity and keeps you focused with less effort

- Massive Battery with Reverse Charging: The TCL NXTPAPER phone packs a 5010mAh battery that powers you all day. With 18W fast charging, it reaches full capacity in just 2.5 hours, and 5W reverse charging lets you charge other phones or devices—ideal for travel or long workdays
For photos and battery priorities
If better photos and longer battery life matter more than a reading-focused display, TechRadar points to the Pixel 10a as another option at a higher price. The NXTPAPER 70 Pro’s camera is positioned more for routine snapshots, and it does not support wireless charging.
Is the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro worth choosing?
For a reader who wants a less reflective screen for articles, ebooks, and comics, the NXTPAPER 70 Pro offers a genuinely distinctive budget-phone experience. Its everyday performance was solid in TechRadar’s month-long use, but its display treatment is a compromise for video and games, and the camera is not aimed at enthusiasts. Choose it for reading comfort; compare conventional-display phones if media image quality or photography is the priority.
