Before deleting photos, check Google’s storage manager: your Google Account quota is shared across Google Photos, Drive, Gmail and, on Android, WhatsApp backups. Your account’s service breakdown—not a universal ranking—shows what is actually using your space. Google says videos and large photos usually take up the most storage, but that may not be true for your account.
What counts toward Google Account storage?
Google says a personal account includes up to 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos; its current Drive cleanup guidance also includes WhatsApp backups. That is the default allowance, not a guarantee that every account has exactly 15 GB. Paid plans, promotions, Workspace arrangements and account type can change the available capacity.

Potential contributors include:
- Google Photos: photos and videos backed up in Original quality, plus qualifying Storage saver (formerly High quality) and Express quality uploads.
- Gmail: messages and attachments, including items in Spam and Trash.
- Google Drive: files such as PDFs, images, videos and Meet recordings; items in Drive Trash can count too.
- Google app files: files created or edited in apps such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, Recorder, Vids and Pics, subject to Google’s applicable date rules.
- Android backups: WhatsApp backups and data included in Android backup settings, such as SMS/MMS, call logs, device settings and app data.
- Other data: hidden app data and background system files.
Shared Drive files generally count against the owner’s storage. Copies you make, files you add to a shared folder and files you own are exceptions. This is one reason the size shown on your computer can differ from your Google cloud usage: a streamed Drive file uses little local disk space but remains in the cloud, while a locally synced copy of someone else’s shared file may use disk space without counting against your quota.

When deleting photos will—and won’t—free space
The backup quality and upload date matter. Google says Original quality photos and videos count toward storage regardless of when they were backed up. Storage saver (previously called High quality) and Express quality media backed up before June 1, 2021 do not count toward the quota. Qualifying uploads in those qualities after that date do count.

So a visible photo is not automatically using your quota. Deleting older, non-counting uploads will not recover storage. Check the Photos storage manager and the account’s service breakdown before removing anything. Google may show recommended cleanup categories such as large photos and videos; an estimated recovery amount is not always available.
How to find the source of the storage use
- Start with Google’s storage manager. Review its usage-by-service breakdown and cleanup suggestions. Use that to decide whether Photos, Drive, Gmail or another category deserves attention first.
- If Drive is a major contributor, inspect its storage view. Google orders files from largest to smallest there. Review large videos, PDFs, old copies and recordings, paying attention to which files you own before deleting them.
- If Gmail is using space, search for large attachments. In Gmail, try
has:attachment larger:10M. Review matching messages before deleting; the search finds messages with attachments larger than 10 MB, not necessarily the only messages contributing to your total. - If Photos is the main contributor, check size and backup context. Look for large videos and photos, and confirm whether uploads count based on their quality and date. Do not treat the entire visible library as quota-consuming.
- Review Spam and Trash before emptying them. Gmail Spam and Trash and Drive Trash can continue to count. Emptying either is a permanent deletion step, so check the contents first.
Delete, export or add capacity?
Choose based on whether you want to reduce cloud use or keep everything available in Google.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Clean up cloud data when you no longer need particular files or messages. Deletion can be permanent, especially after emptying Trash, so inspect items before removing them.
- Export a copy if you want to retain content elsewhere before considering deletion. Google Takeout can copy supported photos and videos, but Google says the transfer does not delete the Google Account originals. Verify the downloaded archive and extracted files before separately deleting any cloud originals. An external drive is one possible place to keep a local copy; it does not itself reduce Google’s quota.
- Add Google One storage if you want to retain cloud content and need more capacity. Plans and availability can vary by region and account.
Allow time for the storage total to catch up
After a large deletion, Google says the storage total can take 48–72 hours to update accurately. If you have removed files but the number has not changed yet, wait before making more deletions based only on the displayed total.
