The best TV lights depend on what you watch and how your television is set up. For built-in streaming apps and varied sources, choose a camera-based system that reads the screen. For a cleaner look without a camera, an HDMI sync system can match content from a connected device, but it usually cannot see apps running directly on the TV. A supported TV sync app is a third option for certain models.
How TV backlights match what is on screen
TV lighting kits generally use one of three approaches. The distinction matters more than a broad “best” label because it determines which content the lights can follow and what hardware and setup are required.

Camera-based lights
A camera mounted on or near the television observes the displayed image and adjusts the lights around it. Because it watches the screen rather than reading a particular input, it can work with built-in TV apps as well as external devices. Reflections, bright room lighting and camera placement can affect color matching.
HDMI sync systems
An HDMI sync box reads the signal from a connected HDMI source, such as a streaming player or game console, and uses it to control the lights. It avoids a camera facing the screen, but generally cannot capture content played through the television’s own apps. Check that the source can be routed through the box and that the box supports the video formats you use.

TV-app and ecosystem sync
Some lighting ecosystems can sync through an app supported on specific TV models, or through a separate screen-sync device. This can avoid a camera while covering supported built-in apps, but availability depends on the exact TV model and the required ecosystem hardware. Do not assume that support for one television in a product family means every model is eligible.

Govee Envisual TV Backlight T2: camera-based
Govee’s US T2 product FAQ describes a dual-camera system and twice as many LED beads as its 3 Lite H6099. The FAQ says the kit is incompatible with curved TVs and that its counterweight camera mount can only be placed at the top of the screen. If matching is off, Govee recommends reducing interfering light or reflections and adjusting saturation or white balance in the app. Its DreamView feature can synchronize other Govee lights that do not have cameras.
Govee TV Backlight 3 Lite: camera-based kit
The official store listing describes a camera-based kit with a strip and light bars for 55–65-inch TVs, plus voice-assistant compatibility. Confirm the size range and included components on the current listing; kit variants and contents should not be assumed interchangeable.

Nanoleaf 4D: camera-based alternative
TechRadar describes Nanoleaf 4D as a camera-based screen-mirroring option that can work regardless of content source. As with other camera kits, reflections and changing room light may affect matching.
Philips Hue Play gradient strip: verify sync route and availability
Philips Hue’s US product page for its 85-inch listing describes gradient wall lighting for TVs up to 85 inches. It lists syncing through the Hue Sync TV app, Hue screen sync or an HDMI sync box, and says a sync device and Hue app are required. At access on October 7, 2026, that page showed the product as “Coming soon” and displayed $149.99; treat that as a dated listing, not confirmation of current availability or a stable price. Check the exact TV model and bundle for app eligibility and required hardware.

WiZ HDMI Sync Box: HDMI-based
TechRadar’s review of the WiZ HDMI Sync Box with TV Backlight, first reviewed in July 2025, reports one HDMI 2.0 input, support for 4K at 60Hz, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and size variants. The review says it cannot sync with native smart-TV apps because it relies on an HDMI source. It also notes that a splitter can expand the inputs, at the cost of extra hardware and expense. Those specifications describe the reviewed WiZ kit, not every HDMI sync box.
What to check before choosing a kit
- Screen size: Match the exact supported range for the kit variant to your TV. For example, the cited Hue listing is for TVs up to 85 inches, while the cited Govee 3 Lite listing covers 55–65-inch TVs.
- Panel shape: Check curved-screen compatibility. Govee explicitly says the T2 is not compatible with curved TVs.
- Camera position and room: Make sure a top-mounted camera can sit securely and see the display. Reduce reflections and competing light if choosing a camera kit.
- Playback sources: List the built-in apps and external devices you use. Confirm whether each will be visible to the chosen camera, HDMI route or supported TV app.
- Video formats and inputs: For an HDMI box, verify input count and compatibility with your source’s resolution and HDR formats. Check how additional sources would connect.
- Extra hardware: Verify whether the specific bundle includes any required bridge, sync box or other device. Hue says its cited strip requires a sync device and the Hue app; requirements vary by route.
- Installation: Measure the rear of the TV, allow room for the strip and cables, and check that the camera or strip can be installed without blocking ports or ventilation.
What are the best LED strip lights for TV backlighting?
There is no single best choice for every TV. If you want lights to follow built-in apps, start with camera-based kits or confirm that your exact TV supports a TV-app sync route. If you mainly watch through HDMI devices and want to avoid a visible camera, consider a sync box after checking its inputs and video-format support. Choose only a kit whose screen-size range, mounting method and required hardware fit your setup.

Is an HDMI sync box better than a camera-based TV backlight?
Neither is universally better. An HDMI box reads the connected video signal and avoids camera reflections, but generally misses native TV apps. A camera can follow built-in apps and other content shown on the screen, but placement, reflections and room light affect its view. Choose according to your sources and room, not the sync method alone.
Do Ambilight alternatives work with any TV?
No. Camera kits have physical and screen-size constraints, HDMI systems depend on a compatible routed signal, and TV-app sync is limited to supported models. Check the exact kit’s size and shape compatibility, then verify the app, input or hardware requirements for the way you watch.
