If Task Manager closes, freezes, or shows a blank pane when you select Performance in Windows 11, the available Microsoft guidance does not identify a cause specific to that failure or confirm a set of 12 fixes. Treat the steps below as evidence-led troubleshooting, not guaranteed cures. First note exactly what happens, whether other Task Manager tabs work, and what changed shortly before the problem began.
First determine what is actually failing
“Crashes” can describe different symptoms. Note whether Task Manager exits, stops responding, or stays open with an empty Performance pane. Check whether the Processes and other tabs still work. These observations help describe the fault, but Microsoft’s published guidance does not establish which one points to a particular cause.

Also check whether other Windows features are malfunctioning and whether the display itself flickers. Record recent Windows updates, driver changes, newly installed apps, and hardware changes. Their timing can guide which checks are relevant; it does not prove that any one change caused the crash.

If the issue began around a Windows update, or updates are pending, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install appropriate available updates and follow any restart prompt. This is general maintenance, not a confirmed fix for a Performance-tab crash.

If Windows Update reports an error, use Microsoft’s Troubleshoot problems updating Windows guidance for that update problem rather than assuming it explains Task Manager’s behavior.
Use driver troubleshooting only if the display flickers
Microsoft’s screen-flickering guidance uses Task Manager to help distinguish a display-driver issue from an incompatible app: observe whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen. That check applies to flickering. It does not diagnose a crash confined to the Performance tab when the display is otherwise stable.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
If flickering is present, follow Microsoft’s Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows instructions. In that scenario, Microsoft says a recently updated driver may warrant considering a rollback; otherwise, updating or uninstalling the driver may be relevant. Match the action to the timing and symptoms, and avoid removing a driver without a reason.
Repair system files when Windows has broader problems
System-file repair is more relevant when the Task Manager issue accompanies other Windows malfunctions. Microsoft notes that missing or corrupted critical system files can cause the operating system to malfunction. Its supported sequence is to run DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC), from an elevated Command Prompt:

- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the prompt if asked.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Wait for the operation to finish. - Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. Wait for verification to finish, then follow any result or restart prompt.
Microsoft explains that DISM provides files needed to repair corrupted files, which is why it should run before SFC. See Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. These checks address system-file corruption generally; they are not a confirmed repair for this specific crash.
Consider recovery only when the wider situation justifies it
If the problem followed a significant system change and other Windows functions are failing, review Microsoft’s recovery guidance and choose an option that fits the broader problem. Recovery is not a targeted remedy documented for a Performance-tab-only crash.

If it still crashes, prepare a useful report
Task Manager is a built-in Windows tool for monitoring performance and managing processes. If the failure persists, gather details that make it reproducible before seeking support:

Why this is not a verified list of 12 fixes
The Microsoft material relevant to this problem covers general system-file repair, flickering displays, Windows Update, and broader recovery scenarios. It does not document a crash limited to Task Manager’s Performance tab or validate 12 fixes for it. Adding registry edits, deleting Task Manager settings, driver-cleaning utilities, or reinstalling Windows as supposed fixes would go beyond the available evidence and could create additional problems.
