Windows 11’s “The Extraction Operation was not Completed” message with error 0x8096002A does not identify one specific cause. Start by checking whether one archive or several fail, then test the archive format, encryption, and extraction destination before attempting Windows repairs.
What error 0x8096002A tells you—and what it doesn’t
File Explorer may show “An unexpected error is preventing the archive from being extracted” or “Error 0x8096002A: No error description available.” The code is an extraction failure, not a documented diagnosis of corruption, a long path, antivirus interference, or damaged Windows files. Microsoft’s support guidance explains supported formats and extraction steps for Windows 11 version 24H2, but does not define this error code. Microsoft’s ZIP and unzip guidance is useful for determining what Explorer should handle; it should not be read as an explanation of the code.

Start with these 12 checks
1. Find out whether one archive or several fail
Try a different archive you trust. If only one file fails, focus first on that archive, its format, and how it was downloaded. If unrelated archives also fail, test another destination and consider whether the issue is broader. This is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Identify the format and Windows version
Check the file extension, such as .zip, .rar, .7z, or .tar, and confirm your Windows version by opening Settings > System > About. Microsoft describes built-in support for ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR in Windows 11 version 24H2. That statement is specific to 24H2; don’t assume every Windows 11 build has the same built-in support.

3. Check whether the archive is encrypted
Microsoft says the built-in Windows 11 version 24H2 experience does not support operations on encrypted archive files. If the archive is password-protected, use a compatible archive application and enter the correct password. Microsoft names 7-Zip and WinRAR as alternatives for encrypted archives in its support guidance.
4. Move the archive to a simple local folder
Copy the archive to a folder such as C:Temp and try again. This checks whether the original location is contributing to the problem; it does not establish that a long path caused the error.
5. Use Extract All for an ordinary ZIP
For a standard, unencrypted ZIP, right-click the zipped folder in File Explorer, select Extract All…, then follow the prompts. These are Microsoft’s documented steps for extracting a zipped folder. If the option or result differs, check the file type and Windows build rather than assuming the archive is a normal ZIP.

6. Choose a short local extraction destination
When prompted, select a simple folder on a local drive, such as C:TempExtracted. A short local destination is a practical way to test whether the original destination contributes to the failure, not an official definition of error 0x8096002A.
7. Check free space and write access
Confirm that the destination drive has enough available space and that your account can create files in the chosen folder. If extraction still fails, try a different folder on the same drive, then another local drive if available. A destination or write problem is one possibility; the error itself does not prove that storage is full.
8. Verify the downloaded archive
If the publisher provides a checksum, compare the downloaded file’s checksum with the published value using a trusted checksum tool. A mismatch or incomplete download is reason to obtain a fresh copy from the legitimate source. If no checksum is provided and there are no other signs of a bad download, redownloading is a test—not a confirmed fix.

9. Compare ZIP extraction with PowerShell
For a ZIP only, you can compare File Explorer with PowerShell’s Expand-Archive command. Open PowerShell and run:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Expand-Archive -LiteralPath "C:Temparchive.zip" -DestinationPath "C:TempExtracted"
Replace the example paths with the ZIP’s actual location and a destination folder that exists or can be created. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a method for RAR, 7z, or TAR files. If PowerShell reports an error, read that output for additional clues; success outside Explorer suggests an extraction-route difference, not proof that every file in the archive is sound.
10. Try a compatible dedicated extractor
Use a reputable archive application that supports the file’s format and, if applicable, encryption. Microsoft specifically points to 7-Zip or WinRAR for encrypted archives. If the same archive extracts there but not in File Explorer, that suggests a compatibility difference; it does not by itself prove the archive is flawless. Community reports on Microsoft Q&A describe alternate extractors as workarounds, but user reports do not guarantee a result for every archive.

11. Review Windows Security protection history if there was a block
If Windows Security displayed a specific block or notification during extraction, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and review the event. Don’t permanently disable protection to test an archive. The error code alone is not evidence that security software caused the failure.
12. Check the drive; reserve Windows repairs for broader symptoms
If failures involve a particular destination drive, check whether it is accessible and can save other files. Consider repairing Windows components only if you also have broader Windows problems. DISM and System File Checker are not substitutes for a complete archive, supported compression, adequate space, or a writable destination.

Quick Recap
Use the results to choose the next step
- One archive fails, others work: Check its format and encryption, verify its download if a checksum is available, and try a compatible extractor.
- Several unrelated archives fail in one folder: Try a short local destination with enough space and write access.
- The archive is encrypted or uses a format Explorer does not handle on your build: Use an application that supports that format and its encryption.
- PowerShell or another extractor succeeds: The difference points to an extraction-route or compatibility issue; it does not prove the archive is undamaged.
- Multiple unrelated Windows functions are also failing: Check the drive and then consider Windows component repair as part of broader troubleshooting.
