If you cannot access Settings, a model-specific recovery procedure or a previously enabled remote-erase feature may be an option. Back up first and make sure you can complete account verification after the reset.
Choose the right kind of reset
A restart and a factory reset are not the same. Samsung says a restart closes open apps without affecting long-term stored data. A factory data reset removes personal data and restores factory settings. Samsung’s US support page describes it this way: “A factory data reset restores your phone to its factory settings and removes all personal data.”

If you suspect a third-party app is causing trouble, try an appropriate diagnostic option such as Safe Mode or Maintenance Mode before erasing. Samsung describes a factory reset for a boot-loop problem as a last resort after earlier troubleshooting.

Back up and prepare before erasing
A factory reset permanently deletes data stored on the device. Samsung lists personal data, customized settings, downloaded Play Store apps, messages, contacts, and photos among the items that may be removed. Use a Samsung account, Google account, or Smart Switch backup option as appropriate, and verify that the information you need is actually backed up. Some apps may require separate transfer or backup steps for their private data.

- Make sure you know the Google account previously used on the device. Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) may require that account during setup after certain reset methods.
- If a Samsung account is signed in, have its credentials available; Samsung may request them during a Settings reset.
- Connect to a network when needed to sign out of a Samsung account during reset completion.
- If the device has an encrypted microSD card, decrypt it before resetting. Samsung warns that the device may otherwise be unable to read the card’s data afterward. Preserve any files you need from it.
For a phone or tablet you plan to sell or give away, remove the Google account through the device’s settings before resetting, following the instructions for that Android version. A reset does not bypass ownership checks.
Reset a Samsung Galaxy through Settings
For an accessible device, Samsung’s common route is Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. The exact labels and layout can vary by model and software version, so treat this as a general path rather than a guarantee that every screen will match.

- Open Settings, then tap General management.
- Tap Reset, then choose Factory data reset.
- Review the information about what will be erased and tap Reset.
- Confirm with Delete all. Enter the device lock credential or Samsung account credentials if requested.
- Allow the device to restart and begin initial setup.
Samsung notes that a network connection is required to log out of a Samsung account during completion. If you cannot complete account verification or initial setup, Samsung US directs owners to a Samsung service center for assistance.

Samsung provides several narrower reset choices under the device’s Reset menu. These are useful when the problem appears limited to a category of settings rather than the device as a whole.

Menu names and options differ by Galaxy model and software version. Read the confirmation screen so you know which settings the selected option will change.
Reset when you cannot use Settings
Samsung’s UK recovery instructions describe connecting the switched-off phone to a computer with a USB cable before entering recovery. The button combination used to enter recovery depends on the model, so check the official instructions for the exact Galaxy model instead of trying a sequence intended for a different device. Recovery menus and wording can also differ across generations.

- Switch off the phone and connect it to a computer with a compatible USB data cable, following the model-specific Samsung instructions.
- Use the model-specific button combination to open the recovery menu.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Delete all user data or Wipe data/factory reset, then select it with the power button.
- Confirm the wipe when prompted. When it finishes, choose Reboot system now.
Samsung says the reset may take a few minutes. A recovery reset can trigger Google account verification for an account previously registered on the device. If you cannot verify ownership, contact Samsung support rather than treating a reset as a way around that protection.
Erase a Galaxy device remotely
Samsung’s UK support instructions describe using SmartThings Find to locate, lock, or erase a device. Remote erasure is conditional: the phone must have Wi-Fi or mobile-data access, be signed in to the Samsung account, and have remote-control and remote-unlock settings enabled. Availability and service names may vary by region and software version.

- Sign in to the supported Samsung device-finding service with the Samsung account associated with the phone.
- Select the device and choose Erase data.
- Complete any identity checks and confirm the erase.
Once erased, the device can no longer be controlled remotely. If it is offline or the required features were not enabled before it became inaccessible, the prerequisites for this method are not met.
