Choose first by the lens system you already own or can build, then weigh autofocus features against the burst rate available with the required power setup. These are used film cameras, and their published specifications do not establish how often one will capture a sharply focused action frame in real-world use.
How the three cameras compare for action
| Camera | Autofocus | Manufacturer-quoted drive rate | System fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canon EOS-1V | 45-point AF array and AI Servo autofocus. Canon Camera Museum specifications | Up to 10 fps with the PB-E2 and NP-E2 configuration; Canon’s historical overview separately describes about 9 fps in predictive AI Servo with the PB-E2. Canon specifications; Canon historical overview | Uses Canon EF lenses; a natural choice if you already have compatible EF glass. |
| Nikon F5 | Five selectable focus areas; Dynamic AF can follow a moving subject when it leaves the selected area. Nikon F5 Camera Chronicle | Up to 8 fps with the MN-30 Ni-MH battery unit, in continuous AF, at shutter speeds of 1/250 second or faster. Nikon F5 Camera Chronicle | Nikon F mount; lens support depends on the specific lens. Integrated battery holder; about 1,210 g body-only without batteries. |
| Nikon F6 | 11-area Multi-CAM2000 AF with single-area, dynamic, group-dynamic and closest-subject dynamic modes. Nikon F6 announcement; Nikon F6 Camera Chronicle | 5.5 fps natively; up to 8 fps with the MB-40 battery pack. Nikon F6 announcement | Nikon F mount; verify compatibility for the exact lens and confirm the MB-40 is included if you need the higher rate. |
These figures describe manufacturer-stated capabilities, not a controlled head-to-head sports test. A higher quoted frame rate does not mean every frame will be in focus, and AF point count alone does not measure tracking success.

Which one should you choose?
Choose the Canon EOS-1V if you use Canon EF lenses
The EOS-1V combines a 45-point AF array with AI Servo and offers the highest quoted maximum drive rate of these three in its PB-E2/NP-E2 configuration. Canon’s separate historical figure of about 9 fps applies to predictive AI Servo with the PB-E2, so it should not be conflated with the 10 fps maximum configuration. The camera’s EF compatibility makes it the practical shortlist leader for photographers already invested in that lens system.
Choose the Nikon F5 for a substantial, action-oriented Nikon body
The F5’s Dynamic AF is designed to keep following a moving subject across its five focus areas if it leaves the selected area. Its 8 fps figure is conditional: Nikon specifies the MN-30 Ni-MH unit, continuous autofocus and shutter speed of 1/250 second or faster. The integrated battery holder and roughly 1,210 g body-only weight make it a large, heavy option to carry during a long event.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the Nikon F6 for the later Nikon AF system and flexibility
The F6 provides 11 AF areas and several dynamic-area modes, with predictive focus operation. Its native drive rate is 5.5 fps; reaching up to 8 fps requires the MB-40 pack. The pack’s availability and condition matter when comparing used listings, and Nikon F-mount lens functions vary by lens type.
Choose the lens system before chasing frame rate
For field sports, a compatible telephoto lens is an essential part of the setup. The right focal length depends on the sport, venue and shooting distance, so there is no single focal-length recommendation that fits every event. Check autofocus and aperture support for the exact lens-camera pairing before buying: Canon specifies EF-lens compatibility for the EOS-1V, while Nikon’s F5 and F6 compatibility information distinguishes supported lens types and retained functions.

Do not assume that a newer digital-era lens will preserve every feature on an older film body. Verify the compatibility details for the particular camera and lens rather than relying on the mount name alone.

What to inspect when buying used
Original specifications cannot tell you whether an individual used camera still works correctly, is serviceable or is fairly priced. Current inventory, warranty terms and repair-part availability are not established here. Ask the seller for clear evidence of operation and check the accessories needed for your intended shooting configuration.

- Confirm autofocus operation, including focus acquisition and tracking behavior.
- Check shutter operation and film transport, along with the exposure meter and all displays.
- Inspect the battery compartment for corrosion and the body for impact damage.
- Confirm the included battery or power pack; the quoted top rates depend on specific accessories and conditions.
- For a Nikon body, verify the exact lens compatibility and retained functions. For the EOS-1V, confirm the lens is a compatible Canon EF lens.
Nikon’s 2004 F6 announcement cites a 150,000-cycle shutter test specification. That historical manufacturer claim is not a guarantee about the shutter count, present condition or remaining life of a particular used F6.
Use bursts selectively
High-speed drive can help record a brief sequence of action, but it also advances film rapidly. The available evidence does not establish current film prices or a comparable cost per frame, so treat the maximum rate as an option for short, intentional bursts rather than a reason to hold the shutter continuously. Anticipating the action and timing a short sequence remain important with any of these bodies.

What the specifications cannot settle
No standardized, independent comparison of autofocus hit rates across the EOS-1V, F5 and F6 is established here. The manufacturer specifications make it possible to compare focus-area features, drive-rate conditions and lens systems, but they do not justify ranking these cameras by real-world sports success. A camera’s age, individual condition, lens choice and the photographer’s technique all matter; the published burst figures should not be mistaken for modern digital sports performance.
