On Zello, Standby usually means the person is not currently reachable for live messages—for example, because their device has lost internet access, is off, or the app is no longer running. It can also be how other people see someone who selected Offline. Standby is generally automatic, not a status the user chooses directly. Message behavior depends on whether you use Friends & Family or Zello Work, and whether the message is direct or sent to a channel.
What does Standby mean on Zello?
Standby indicates that Zello cannot currently reach the user for real-time communication. A lost connection, a powered-off device, or an app that is no longer running can cause it. A person who deliberately selects Offline may also appear as Standby to contacts or teammates.

For Friends & Family, Zello Support states that “Standby status cannot be selected by the user.” In both product versions, treat Standby as an indicator of the user’s availability from the perspective of others, not as a button they necessarily tapped. The available choices and controls differ by product. Friends & Family users can choose Available, Busy, Solo, or Offline. Zello Work administrators may control whether users are allowed to change their status; a newly added Work user who has not signed in may also show as Standby.

Can you message someone who is in Standby?
Yes. The message may be delivered or played later, but the outcome depends on the product and message type.

Friends & Family direct messages
Direct messages sent to someone in Standby play in the order received when that person returns to Available. If they were Busy before entering Standby, missed messages are shown in History.

Zello Work direct messages
Direct messages sent while a Work user is in Standby are queued in History and play in order when the user returns. Work documentation also says push notifications may appear if the device still has internet access and notifications are enabled. The guidance describes messages to an Offline user appearing in Standby as sendable for up to seven days; this is a Zello Work behavior, not a general guarantee for Friends & Family or every configuration. Zello Work Android delivery setting
For Work on Android, an administrator can configure “Asynchronous message delivery” in the management console. When enabled, missed messages can be queued during Standby and autoplay after internet access returns and the user’s status becomes Available. If direct-message behavior differs from this, ask the network administrator whether the setting is enabled. Zello Support: Management Console Settings for Android Devices (May 8, 2026)
Are missed channel messages replayed after Standby?
Generally, no. For both Friends & Family and Zello Work, missed channel messages are not queued for later playback after the user reconnects. A sender may choose to alert all channel members; that can generate an alert while the recipient is in Standby, and Work guidance notes that all-member alerts may arrive as push notifications. An alert is not the same as replaying the missed channel audio.

In Zello Work, the keep-alive interval controls how often the app checks in over Wi-Fi or cellular service. A longer interval uses less bandwidth and may improve battery life, but it can delay detection of a lost connection. As a result, the displayed status may remain Available for a time instead of changing promptly to Standby. A Work network administrator can review the applicable setting. How does a user leave Standby?
Standby is expected to end when connectivity returns or the user logs back in or reopens Zello. The status should then return to Available or Busy, depending on the user’s status.

- Check that the device has an internet connection.
- Make sure Zello is running; reopen it or log back in if needed.
- If the status remains stale in Zello Work, ask the network administrator to check connection and status settings, including the keep-alive interval or Android asynchronous message delivery where relevant.
