Take-Two Interactive chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick says generative AI can make parts of game development faster, but it cannot turn a prompt into a hit on the scale of Grand Theft Auto. The distinction, in his view, is between producing assets and creating a successful game: the latter still depends on human creativity, judgment and execution.
What Strauss Zelnick said about AI in gaming
In a March 17, 2026 interview with The Game Business, Zelnick said tools that help companies work better and faster are beneficial. But asset-generation tools do not automatically produce commercially successful games. “These tools may help you create assets, but that won’t help you create hits,” he said.

He pointed to the volume of mobile games released each year and the much smaller number that become hits as evidence that production is only part of the challenge. A game can have polished or familiar-looking assets without having the qualities that make players care about it or keep playing.

Zelnick made the distinction explicit for major sports and open-world franchises: “You can create assets that might look like NBA 2K or EA Sports FC. But creating a hit of that magnitude is a completely different animal and does require human engagement and creativity.”

Why AI-generated assets are not the same as a hit
Generative tools can help teams search for ideas, storyboard scenes, explore alternatives and produce some assets. Those capabilities can reduce time spent on particular tasks. They do not, by themselves, decide what a game should be, which ideas are worth pursuing, how its systems fit together, or whether the finished experience connects with players.
Zelnick’s argument is not that AI has no use in development. It is that efficiency and authorship are different questions. A tool may accelerate work inside a team; that does not establish that it can independently supply the creative direction, coordination and execution needed for a blockbuster.

Why Zelnick says a prompt cannot make the next GTA
In a February 7, 2025 interview reported by GameSpot, Zelnick described AI as a digital tool and said its use should improve efficiency without reducing employment. He rejected the idea that someone could prompt a system to create a superior Grand Theft Auto competitor, release it digitally and expect that to be enough.

In an October 24, 2025 report, PC Gamer quoted him saying: “I’m not worried about AI creating hits, because it’s built on data that already exists. It’s backward-looking. Big hits are forward-looking and therefore need to be created out of thin air.”

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
That is Zelnick’s view of the limits of current AI, not independent proof that AI could never contribute to a hit. The distinction he draws is between recombining patterns in existing material and making the choices that result in something audiences find genuinely new.
Does Zelnick think AI will replace game developers?
His stated position is that AI should raise efficiency without reducing employment. That is a forecast and a preference, not a guarantee about how every studio will use the technology. AI could change the tasks developers perform, and the eventual effects on jobs remain uncertain.

For now, the strongest reading of his comments is that he expects AI to assist people rather than replace the creative and organizational work behind a major release. Tools can be available to a studio, but turning them into a coherent game still requires capable teams and the resources to develop and ship it.

Is Take-Two using AI in game development?
Zelnick’s comments describe potential uses for AI and his view of its limits; they do not establish which AI systems or workflows Take-Two studios currently use in specific projects. Take-Two’s May 2, 2025 corporate release identifies Rockstar Games as a wholly owned label and lists physical, digital, online and cloud distribution channels, but it does not provide a studio-by-studio account of AI use. - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
What this means for the future of blockbuster games
AI may help game teams move faster on bounded production tasks, but Zelnick’s comments caution against confusing speed with creative success. Access to asset-generation tools is not the same as having the taste, collaboration, management and execution needed to make a game that stands out. Whether AI will eventually play a more independent creative role remains open; his remarks are a skeptical executive’s assessment, not a settled industry verdict.
