Can Brain Implants Make Us Telepathic? What the Research Shows

Brain-computer interfaces can decode speech-related signals and support digital control. A separate experiment relayed a simple, computer-mediated cue—not unrestricted thoughts.

Not in the everyday sense of telepathy. Brain-computer interfaces can translate certain speech-related brain signals into computer output, and a laboratory experiment has sent a simple, deliberately encoded signal from one person’s brain activity to another person’s brain through a computer. These are constrained technical systems—not devices that reveal arbitrary thoughts or enable ordinary mind-to-mind conversation.

What does “telepathic” mean in this research?

The word covers three different ideas that should not be confused:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Brain-to-computer communication: sensors record neural activity, software decodes a specific signal, and a computer turns it into words, voice, or device control.
  • Neuralink’s “Telepathy” label: the company uses this name for an investigational assistive capability intended to let people with quadriplegia control external devices.
  • Brain-to-brain signal transfer: in one proof-of-concept experiment, a computer relayed encoded information between two participants, and stimulation gave the receiver a simple sensory cue.

Only the third involves a signal going from one person to a cue perceived by another. Even there, sensors, computers, and stimulation mediate the transfer. “Telepathy” is therefore a loose analogy for limited signal exchange, not a description of unrestricted thought sharing.

Can a brain implant read your thoughts?

The clearest human use case in the sources is assistive speech decoding. In a 2024 report, the National Institutes of Health described a UC Davis system used by a 45-year-old man with ALS and severely impaired speech. Researchers implanted four arrays, each containing 64 microelectrodes, in a speech-related area of his cortex. As he attempted to speak, an external computer decoded neural activity, displayed predicted words, and converted them to synthesized speech.

NIH reported that after 16 hours of use, the system correctly identified about 97.5% of words for this participant. That is a result for one person using this particular setup; it is not a general accuracy guarantee for brain implants or speech BCIs.

The system decoded activity associated with an intended speech task. That is different from extracting whatever a person happens to remember, imagine, feel, or intend. A decoder trained to recognize a particular kind of signal does not thereby become a general-purpose reader of mental content.

What is inner-speech decoding, and how far does it go?

Inner speech means words a person silently formulates in their head. In a September 2025 summary, NIH described research decoding inner speech from motor-cortex signals. The work explores whether people with paralysis might communicate without having to attempt the physical movements of speaking. NIH also notes that current speech-decoding systems generally rely on attempted physical speech.

That is a meaningful research direction, but decoding imagined words is still narrower than decoding all thought. Caltech’s 2024 account also described an implanted brain-machine interface finding speech signals in a second participant. These reports concern speech-related signals, not evidence that a device can recover arbitrary memories, mental images, or nonverbal thoughts.

Have scientists made brain-to-brain communication work?

A 2014 peer-reviewed PLOS ONE experiment demonstrated a limited, computer-mediated signal transfer between people. The sender used motor imagery—imagining a movement—to produce EEG activity that encoded binary values. A computer transmitted the encoded information over an internet-mediated setup. At the receiving end, neuronavigated, robotized transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) induced conscious perceptions of light flashes.

The receiver perceived a simple cue generated by stimulation; the experiment did not deliver a sentence, image, or spontaneous thought. The paper called its work “the first demonstration of non-invasive direct communication between human minds,” but “direct” here does not mean that one brain connected to another without technical mediation. The authors characterized the information rates as modest, and the experiment was a proof of concept.

What does Neuralink mean by “Telepathy”?

In its April 12, 2024 PRIME Study progress update, Neuralink called the capability “Telepathy.” The company described its first intended indication as restoring “digital autonomy” for people with quadriplegia by enabling control of external devices. Its update said the first participant used the system for activities including online chess and a video game.

This is a company’s name for an assistive digital-control goal within an investigational clinical study. It does not mean the participant can send thoughts to another person. Neuralink’s stated N1 configuration—1,024 electrodes distributed across 64 flexible leads—is a device specification from the company, not an independently comparative measure of performance.

What should readers take from the evidence?

When a report says a BCI can “decode” brain activity, ask what signal it decoded, what output followed, and who took part. Attempted speech, imagined words, motor imagery, and a stimulation-induced flash are different tasks. So are controlling a computer, producing speech output, and relaying a signal to another person through a technical system.

The cited work establishes research and investigational uses, not general consumer availability. These sources also do not establish a cross-system comparison of safety, long-term durability, or outcomes for the general population. The right description is progress in constrained assistive communication and experimental signal transfer—not a technology for reading or sharing unrestricted thoughts.
