Tactile Adds Hover Haptics to MacBook Trackpads—Here’s What It Does

Tactile is a free macOS menu-bar app that uses a Force Touch trackpad to cue clickable controls with haptic feedback when you hover over them.

The free macOS app Tactile gives a Force Touch trackpad a haptic cue when your pointer reaches clickable controls. It is not a touchscreen feature, and it does not make a tap click for you: the cue is feedback you feel through the trackpad as you hover over controls such as buttons, links, checkboxes, menus, and tabs.

What Tactile changes on a MacBook

Tactile runs from the macOS menu bar and uses the trackpad’s haptic motor to provide a tactile indication that the pointer is over an interactive control. The developer describes it as an accessibility aid for people who find a physical cue useful alongside visual hover states. It is distinct from tapping the MacBook itself or adding a touchscreen.

Apple describes haptic feedback as the tactile response from a Force Touch trackpad when you click or, in supported apps, move objects into alignment. Tactile applies that kind of physical response to pointer hover over clickable controls, according to its developer documentation. Apple’s explanation of Force Click and trackpad haptics covers the underlying hardware behavior.

What you need before installing it

  • macOS 14.6 or later: this is the minimum listed by the Tactile project.
  • A Force Touch trackpad: the developer says modern MacBook Air and MacBook Pro built-in trackpads are supported, as is a Magic Trackpad.
  • Accessibility permission: Tactile requests this on first launch so it can provide its feature.

Trackpad hardware varies, so do not assume every MacBook has the required haptics. Apple says most modern Mac laptops have Force Touch; trackpads without it use a mechanical click and do not provide Force Click haptics. Check your Mac’s model and trackpad settings if you are unsure. Apple Support explains how to identify and use Force Touch behavior.

How to download and set it up

  1. Open the Tactile project’s GitHub releases and download Tactile.app.
  2. Move the app into your Applications folder, then launch it.
  3. When macOS prompts you, grant Tactile Accessibility permission in System Settings.
  4. Look for Tactile in the menu bar and try moving the pointer over clickable controls.

The developer says the app is notarized by Apple and provides source code. Those are claims from the project; they are not a substitute for independent security review. The developer also offers an optional Chrome extension intended to improve detection of custom buttons on web pages. It is not required for the basic app, and it does not guarantee that every control on every site or in every app will be detected.

Tactile versus macOS Tap to click

macOS already includes a Tap to click setting, but it changes how you perform a click rather than adding hover feedback. With Tap to click enabled, tapping the trackpad registers a click; Tactile’s purpose is to let you feel a cue when the pointer is over a control. Apple documents Tap to click and other trackpad interactions in its MacBook Pro trackpad guide and pointing-device guidelines.

What to keep in mind

  • Tactile depends on Force Touch haptics, so a trackpad with only a mechanical click cannot provide its intended cue.
  • The published minimum is macOS 14.6; the project page does not establish a current release number or independent compatibility results for every MacBook model.
  • Coverage may differ for custom web controls. The optional Chrome extension is intended to improve coverage, not promise universal detection.
