The timing of the restarts can help narrow the possibilities, but it cannot identify a fault on its own. Update the phone and run available diagnostics before considering a data-erasing factory reset or service.
Start by noting when the restarts happen
Before changing settings, look for a pattern: does the phone restart at roughly the same time, mostly while idle, after a system update, after installing or updating an app, while charging, or during a particular task? A regular idle-time restart can point toward a schedule setting. A change that began after an app or software update makes that change worth checking. These are clues, not proof of a particular cause.

A restart during a software update can be expected. Repeated restarts at seemingly random times, especially outside an update, warrant further checks. Samsung identifies automatic restart settings, third-party apps and software issues among possibilities; some problems may require service.
Check the automatic restart settings first
On supported software, open Settings > Device care > Auto optimisation > Auto restart. Review Restart when needed and Restart on schedule, and turn off any setting you do not want active. Menu names and locations can vary by model and software version; if the path differs, search Settings for “Auto restart” or consult Samsung’s instructions for your device. Samsung India’s Auto restart guide describes the controls and their behavior.

Samsung says Auto restart may run by default only when the phone is idle, the screen is off and the battery is at least 30%. That 30% is a condition Samsung gives for the feature, not a battery-health threshold. Turning the controls off does not rule out every cause: Samsung cautions that a system restart may still happen, and emergency security updates may restart a device automatically in some regions even when automatic software download settings are off.
Use Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is involved
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps and runs the phone with core apps. If the restarts stop in Safe mode, a downloaded app becomes a stronger possibility; if they continue, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause. Samsung describes Safe mode as a way to determine whether a third-party app is causing an issue in its Safe mode instructions.
- Open the phone’s Power menu. On many models, you can do this from the Quick panel or by pressing the side and volume buttons; the sequence varies.
- Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode option appears, then select it. Follow the on-screen prompt if it differs on your device.
- Use the phone long enough to see whether the usual restart pattern returns. A brief test may not be meaningful if restarts normally happen only occasionally.
- If the problem stops, restart normally and remove apps installed or updated around the time the restarts began, one at a time. Test after each removal so you can tell whether the pattern changes.
If the phone still restarts in Safe mode, do not keep removing unrelated apps as though that result proves which component is at fault. Continue with updates and diagnostics; if the behavior persists, seek Samsung support.

Check for software updates and run available diagnostics
Open Settings > Software update and follow the on-device instructions to check for and install an available update. Samsung’s US guidance recommends an internet connection, sufficient free storage and at least 50% charge before installing an update; some carriers require Wi-Fi. The phone may reboot during installation, so a restart as part of that process is not by itself evidence of the original problem. See Samsung’s guidance for repeated reboot issues for update and troubleshooting details.
If Samsung Members is installed and Phone diagnostics is available for your device, you can run the relevant checks in the app. Availability and diagnostic options vary. A diagnostic result may help guide the next step, but it is not a substitute for service assessment when the phone continues to restart.

A factory reset erases personal data, so treat it as a later troubleshooting step rather than a first response. Back up important information before proceeding. Samsung lists account or cloud methods and removable USB or SD storage among possible backup destinations; what is available depends on the phone and your setup. If using removable storage, confirm that it is compatible with your model. Samsung’s backup and restore guide explains supported options.
After resetting, test the phone before reinstalling downloaded apps. If it works normally until apps are restored, that timing may help identify an app-related trigger. If restarts continue on the reset phone, contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider instead of assuming a specific part needs replacement.

| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Restarts occur on a regular schedule or mainly while idle | An automatic restart control may be involved; the pattern does not prove it. | Review Auto restart settings and see whether the pattern changes. |
| Restarts began after installing or updating an app, then stop in Safe mode | A downloaded app is more plausible. | Remove recent or updated apps one at a time, testing after each removal. |
| Restarts continue in Safe mode | Downloaded apps are less likely to explain the issue. | Check for updates and available diagnostics; seek support if the problem persists. |
| Restarts continue after a reset, before apps are reinstalled | The issue remains without restored downloaded apps; this alone does not identify a hardware fault. | Contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider. |
| The phone restarts while installing a system update | A reboot can be part of the update process. | Let the update complete, then watch whether unexpected restarts continue afterward. |
Settings, menus and service routes vary across models, software versions and markets. Samsung’s cited support guidance covers India, the US and Australia; check the support site for your region if a menu or service option is unavailable.
