For a tactics game, start by adjusting the camera and learning the tactical HUD so you can inspect the battlefield before spending an action. If the game is running poorly, lower graphics settings gradually and check basic PC troubleshooting steps. Those changes may improve rendering smoothness; they are not evidence that enemy turns resolve faster. The documented controls and performance advice below use XCOM 2 as a specific PC example, not a universal settings template.
Which settings make a tactics game easier to read?
First use the camera to inspect the space your units can reach and the floors around them. Then read the interface cues before choosing an action. These habits improve situational awareness without assuming that one camera angle or graphics preset suits every player.

Move, rotate, and zoom the camera
The XCOM 2 manual lists camera movement, rotation, zoom in and out, toggle zoom, free zoom, and a control to center the camera on the active unit. It also lists controls for moving between floors. The listed keyboard defaults include W/A/S/D for camera movement, Q/E for rotation, G/T for zoom, Z for zoom level, and Home to center on the active unit; floor changes use F/C or the mouse wheel. These defaults can differ by platform or version and can be customized in Options → Interface → Bindings. See the Feral Interactive XCOM 2 manual for the documented controls.

Use the HUD to check unit state and threats
In XCOM 2, the unit flag displays information including health, armor, action points, cover, Overwatch or concealment status, and other effects. The action bar shows available actions; unavailable actions appear greyed out, and some show how many turns remain before they can be reused. Red, yellow, and grey icons above actions indicate the number of enemies in the soldier’s line of sight. A hooded icon and blue screen-corner overlay indicate concealment. Treat these as game-specific interface cues and interpret them in the context of the unit and situation, rather than assuming the same icons mean the same thing in another tactics game.

How do I zoom or change floors in XCOM 2?
- Open the bindings menu: go to Options → Interface → Bindings.
- Check the camera controls: find the entries for movement, rotation, zoom, centering on the active unit, and floor navigation. The manual’s keyboard defaults include W/A/S/D, Q/E, G/T, Z, and Home; F/C or the mouse wheel change floors.
- Use the controls to inspect before acting: move or rotate the camera, zoom as needed, and change floors to check the tactical space. Return to the binding menu if the listed defaults do not match your setup.
The manual identifies these as defaults and allows customization; do not assume a keyboard layout or mouse-wheel behavior without checking the controls for your platform and version.
Which graphics settings should I lower if XCOM 2 runs slowly?
If performance is poor, make reversible changes one at a time and compare the result in the same kind of game scene. Feral Interactive’s XCOM 2 Linux ReadMe gives this qualitative order for trying settings, from those it lists first to those it lists later:
Rank #2
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
| Order in Feral’s Linux guide | Settings to try lowering or adjusting |
|---|---|
| First group | Resolution, V-sync, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, draw distance |
| Next group | Decals, shadows, shadow quality, texture detail and filtering |
| Later group | Depth of field, translucency, bloom, dirty lens, subsurface scattering, screen-space reflections |
This is the order in Feral’s Linux performance guide, not a measured ranking for every platform or edition. Lowering resolution or visual effects can reduce rendering load, but it can also change image clarity or appearance. Feral recommends working through the options until performance and image quality reach an acceptable balance; it does not publish a percentage improvement for each setting. Its Linux ReadMe and performance tips also notes that CPU speed, built-in RAM, graphics card, and selected in-game settings all affect how smoothly the game plays.

2K’s XCOM 2 troubleshooting guidance recommends several checks before concluding that a hardware upgrade is needed:
Rank #3
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- Update the display drivers.
- On a laptop, check that the game is using the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Lower the graphics preset or reduce anti-aliasing.
- Disable user-created mods temporarily to see whether they contribute to instability or performance problems.
These are troubleshooting steps, not proof that any one item is causing a slowdown. Change one thing at a time and compare under similar conditions. See 2K Support’s XCOM 2 basic tech troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do graphics settings make tactical turns faster?
Not necessarily. The performance material from Feral Interactive and 2K concerns smoothness, graphics performance, and troubleshooting; it does not show that lowering graphics settings shortens the time the game spends resolving an enemy or tactical turn. Adjusting demanding effects may help a system render the game more smoothly, but no turn-duration improvement or numerical gain is established.
