Use API monitoring to check that key endpoints and service-level transactions return the expected results; use end-to-end browser monitoring to verify that users can complete important tasks. Add distributed tracing to find where a failing request went wrong inside your services. For most critical applications, these layers complement one another rather than compete.

What API monitoring and end-to-end monitoring mean

API monitoring sends requests to an API over time and checks outcomes such as reachability, response time, status, response content, authentication, or certificate validity. A monitor may be a single request or a scripted sequence that carries state between requests. A basic ping is useful, but a successful status code alone does not show that the underlying business behavior is correct. New Relic’s monitoring documentation and Postman’s monitoring overview describe these broader forms of checking.

End-to-end monitoring is a broader idea: test a representative flow across the parts of the system a user depends on. A browser synthetic might sign in, search, or proceed through checkout. It tests a scripted path from a browser vantage point, not every possible real user’s device, location, or behavior. Synthetic monitoring can also run API checks; “synthetic” describes scheduled, simulated activity, while browser and API checks differ in what they exercise. New Relic’s synthetic monitoring guide covers both monitor types.

Distributed tracing is related, but it is not an end-to-end user test. A trace records how an instrumented request moves through services, represented by spans with parent-child context. It helps explain the internal route and work for a request; by itself, it does not establish that a user-facing flow is usable. See the OpenTelemetry observability primer.

Choose the check based on the question you need answered

Monitoring layer Question it answers Useful evidence What it cannot prove alone
Scheduled endpoint check Can this endpoint be reached, and is it responding within an acceptable time? Availability, status code, response-time threshold, and optionally a response-body match. That a feature or complete application workflow works correctly. Source
Scripted API check Does this service-level transaction behave as expected? Chained requests, carried authentication or state, and assertions on status, payload, and timing; it can also watch a third-party dependency. Browser rendering, front-end behavior, or every issue a customer might encounter. Source
Browser synthetic journey Can a representative user complete a critical flow? Scripted actions such as login, search, or checkout from a browser vantage point. Actual traffic from every user, device, path, and location. Source
Distributed trace Which instrumented services and operations contributed to a request? The request’s span path and parent-child context through components such as a gateway, backend, or database. That the external user journey is usable; instrumentation is needed to see the path. Source
Real-user monitoring (RUM) What did people using the application actually experience? Performance and behavior observed from real traffic. Pre-release behavior or low-traffic areas where real requests may be sparse. Source

How to decide what to use

Match monitoring depth to the failure

For endpoint uptime or basic latency, begin with a scheduled endpoint check. If the concern is response correctness, authentication-dependent behavior, a sequence of service calls, or a third-party dependency, use a scripted API check with assertions tied to consumer-visible outcomes. If a user must complete a browser task for the service to be useful, add a browser journey. When the check detects a failure and the question becomes “which internal dependency caused it?”, use traces alongside metrics and logs.

Choose a vantage point that can reach the service

Run public checks from locations representative of the users or regions you care about. Internal APIs that are not publicly reachable need a private monitor location or runner inside the relevant network. Confirm that the chosen locations, protocols, and execution frequency are supported by the vendor and plan before relying on them.

Fit the checks into release and incident workflows

Consider whether checks need to run on a schedule, from a command-line interface or CI pipeline, or during deployments. Make failures visible to the people who can act on them, and retain run history for investigation. Postman documents scheduled and CLI-triggered runs, notifications, dashboards, and integrations; it also notes that some scheduling frequencies and manual multi-region choices have paid-plan restrictions. Check Postman’s current monitoring documentation for applicable limits.

A practical layered monitoring setup

  1. Cover the most important endpoints. Set up lightweight scheduled checks for critical APIs. Assert an appropriate successful status and response-time threshold; add a response-body assertion if status alone could mask a bad result.
  2. Check critical service transactions. Script the key API sequences, including required authentication or state, and important third-party dependencies. Keep assertions focused on outcomes that matter to a consumer.
  3. Test only the user journeys that need a browser. Add synthetic browser checks for a short list of important tasks, such as login or checkout. Browser tests belong where UI behavior matters; they do not need to duplicate every API test.
  4. Instrument services for diagnosis. Emit traces, metrics, and logs, then use trace context to follow requests across the gateway, backend, database, and other instrumented services when an outside-in check fails. OpenTelemetry provides an instrumentation framework and ecosystem; it is not itself a hosted synthetic-monitoring service. See the OpenTelemetry primer.
  5. Secure access and credentials. Use private execution for internal services when necessary, and store keys and tokens through secure credential mechanisms rather than exposing them in scripts or test artifacts. New Relic and Postman document private execution and credential controls in their synthetics guidance, monitor documentation, and Postman monitoring documentation.
  6. Route failures to an owner. Send actionable alerts to the team’s on-call workflow. Run selected checks during deployments when catching release regressions is useful.

New Relic Synthetics

New Relic documents simple pings, scripted API monitors, browser monitors, public and private locations, and alerts. Its scripted API checks can chain requests, carry authentication or state between steps, and assert status, payload, and timing. Its guidance distinguishes synthetic checks from observations of real traffic. See the feature overview and monitor details.

Postman Monitors

Postman Monitors can run collections or API specifications on schedules or through Postman CLI. Its documentation lists HTTP, GraphQL, and gRPC requests, with GraphQL and gRPC support identified as beta. Private API Monitoring supports checks of internal APIs from a team’s network. Scheduling frequency and manual region selection can be plan-dependent, so verify the current Postman documentation and plan details before choosing.

OpenTelemetry

OpenTelemetry is an instrumentation framework and ecosystem for observability signals, including traces, metrics, and logs. It can provide internal request context that complements outside-in synthetic tests; it is not a hosted API or browser monitor. Its observability primer explains traces and spans.
