There is no universal best local courier: the right choice depends on where you ship and what you send.
1. Describe the shipments you need to send
Start with a practical shipment profile. Record what you ship, typical and maximum parcel dimensions and weights, how often you send orders, where pickups happen, and the destinations you serve. Note delivery deadlines and whether shipments are fragile, valuable, temperature-sensitive or require a recipient’s signature.

Check that shortlisted providers accept your goods and packaging. Restrictions can rule out a courier before price or speed becomes relevant. The UK Post Office recommends considering item type, size, weight, destination, urgency, tracking, compensation and special handling; Australian Government business guidance also advises checking shipping times, express options and parcel-size and weight limits.

2. Confirm coverage and operational fit
Ask each courier to confirm service for your actual pickup locations and customer or supplier postcodes. A provider describing itself as “local” may not serve every route you need or have capacity for your shipment pattern.
Check collection cutoffs, operating days, promised delivery windows, service interruptions and any requirements for pickup access. Confirm the provider can handle your parcels and any special handling needs. The cited guidance offers selection criteria, not evidence that a particular provider covers an unspecified town or route; verify locally rather than relying on a general service-area claim.
3. Verify reliability, not just promises
Ask for performance information that matches the exact service and routes you are considering. Useful questions include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- What are the on-time pickup and delivery rates, and for what period and routes were they measured?
- How does the provider define “on time,” and how are exceptions counted?
- How are delays reported, and when will you be notified?
- Can it provide references from businesses with similar routes and shipment patterns?
Read recent reviews for recurring patterns involving missed windows, parcel condition, communication and resolution. Reviews are useful signals, but they are not audited performance data. The Post Office also recommends looking at track record and reviews for delivery times, handling and aftercare.
4. Distinguish tracking from proof of delivery
Tracking shows shipment progress; proof of delivery is the record available after a delivery is recorded. Ask what both sender and recipient can see, how updates are provided and what confirmation is available for the service you plan to use.

Clarify whether delivery confirmation is a scan, recipient name, location, photograph, signature or another record, and whether it is included or charged separately. Do not assume every courier or service provides the same evidence. For example, USPS says its proof-of-delivery response can include a recipient name, tracking number, signature image, printed name and address, delivery-location attribute, service details and package weight—but availability depends on qualifying service classes or purchased signature services. Those USPS conditions do not apply to other couriers.

5. Compare the full cost for equivalent shipments
Request written quotes using the same sample parcels, routes and delivery windows. Compare the base rate with any charges that apply to your shipments, such as pickup, waiting, fuel, remote-area, failed-delivery, return or minimum-volume fees. Ask whether useful services—including tracking, signature, declared value or a guaranteed delivery window—are included or priced separately.
Like-for-like quotes make it easier to see whether a lower headline rate comes with extra charges or fewer useful services. The Post Office advises comparing equivalent rates and additional costs. The U.S. General Services Administration lists fuel surcharge, detention, residential delivery and guaranteed service among possible shipping charges in its federal guidance; these examples are not a universal fee schedule.

6. Read the compensation and claims terms before shipping valuable goods
Do not assume that “insurance” or compensation covers an item’s full selling or replacement value. Before booking, find out:
- Who is responsible for handling a claim and whether compensation has a cap.
- Which goods are excluded and what packaging rules apply.
- Whether you must declare a value or buy additional cover.
- What evidence is required, how long you have to file and how claims are resolved.
Compare any optional insurance with the value of the goods and the policy’s exclusions. Keep records the provider requires, such as mailing receipts and proof of value. USPS sets conditions for its own products; those conditions are not a guide to another courier’s cover. GSA guidance for its process advises prompt damage claims and preserving evidence such as photographs. Use your selected provider’s contract and the rules that apply in your jurisdiction to establish the actual terms.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Find out how support handles exceptions
Ask how to reach support if a pickup is missed, a delivery is delayed or a recipient is unavailable. Establish what notifications you will receive, how redelivery or return is arranged and how a claim can be escalated. A helpful contact is most valuable when it can explain the next action and its timing.
Also decide what your own team will tell affected customers and who is responsible for sending the update. Australian Government guidance recommends communicating delivery costs, expected times, problem contacts and the business’s remedy policy. Its advice reflects an Australian context; check the obligations that apply where your business operates.

8. Run a small, controlled trial
Before routing all orders through a new provider, send a small batch of representative parcels. Track the same measures for each candidate:
- Pickup punctuality and delivery within the promised window.
- Whether tracking updates were timely and useful, and what delivery confirmation was supplied.
- Any loss, damage, delay or staff time spent resolving an exception.
- The final invoiced cost compared with the quote.
Choose trial shipments that reflect your normal routes and parcel types. There is no universally established sample size or trial duration; make the test large enough to cover the situations that matter to your business, without treating a brief run as proof of long-term performance.
Compare viable providers on the same basis
Once a provider meets your basic route and shipment requirements, compare it with other viable options using equivalent parcels and routes. No universal weighting or numerical score is established for these factors, so give more weight to the risks that matter most to your business—such as late delivery, damage, lost goods or the staff time spent handling problems.
| What to compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Coverage and schedule | Routes served, collection cutoff, operating days and delivery window. |
| Parcel suitability | Size, weight, contents and handling requirements the service accepts. |
| Reliability evidence | Performance for the relevant service and routes, plus how exceptions are counted. |
| Visibility and delivery record | Tracking updates, proof-of-delivery type and any extra charge. |
| Total cost | Written quote and final charges, including applicable surcharges and optional features. |
| Claims and compensation | Limits, exclusions, packaging conditions, evidence and filing process. |
| Exception support | How quickly and clearly the provider responds when something goes wrong. |
Pack appropriately for the goods
Packaging is part of shipping reliability: a courier’s handling performance cannot make an unsuitable box safe. Australian Government business guidance recommends quality boxes and packing materials to help prevent shipping damage. Match the packaging to the item and the provider’s packing rules; packaging alone does not guarantee compensation if a parcel is damaged.

Check local rules and service terms
Courier licensing, legal duties, delivery guarantees, insurance, claim rights and consumer remedies vary by jurisdiction. The selection principles above can help you compare services, but examples from the UK, Australia, the United States or Greece should not be read as universal legal advice. Confirm local requirements and the terms of the particular service you intend to use.
For example, the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission publishes postal-service licensing information for Greece: EETT general information.
