They are not competing editions of the same game: System Shock: Enhanced Edition updates the 1994 original, while System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster updates its 1999 sequel. Choose based on which game you want to play. The first game’s Enhanced Edition adds modern controls and display support; the sequel’s remaster adds updated presentation, console support and co-op.
What is the difference between the two versions?
The names are easy to mix up, but the games are different entries in the series. System Shock: Enhanced Edition is the first game, originally released in 1994. System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is the sequel, originally released in 1999.

The sequel project was initially announced as System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. Nightdive Studios later chose to remaster it rather than remake it: in an Xbox Wire interview, Nightdive’s Stephen Kick said the game was already playable and needed graphical and performance improvements, along with console support. So “Enhanced” and “Remaster” here do not describe two versions of one game.

- You want the option to switch to the Classic version or choose between DOS and Mac art.

If you are new to the series and want to follow its release order, start with System Shock: Enhanced Edition. That is a suggested play order, not a requirement established by the sources here; you do not need to treat the two games as interchangeable editions or assume one must be played before the other.
Where can you get them, and what about the original System Shock 2?
Nightdive lists System Shock: Enhanced Edition on Steam, Humble Bundle and GOG. Its Steam listing says the purchase includes both System Shock Enhanced and System Shock Classic, and that the Enhanced Edition is a free update for previous owners.

Should you compare prices or features?
Compare the games by the experience you want: the first entry with updated controls, or the sequel with its remaster improvements and co-op option. Prices vary by region, storefront and promotion. At the time of the source review on October 3, 2026, the Xbox US listing showed $29.99 for the remaster; that is a dated, regional listing price, not a global or permanent price. Check the store you plan to use for the current price and platform-specific features.
