How Esports Betting Regulations Affect Teams, Sponsors, and Tournaments

Esports betting rules come from three places: gambling laws in the markets where bets are offered or promoted, the game publisher’s and tournament organizer’s rules, and integrity requirements for participants and betting operators. A sponsor deal allowed by a publisher is not automatically legal in every market, and a gambling licence does not automatically make the deal acceptable to a publisher or tournament.

Why esports betting is regulated on more than one level

A single deal can involve a gambling operator, an esports team, a publisher, an event organizer, players, and viewers in several countries. Each may face a different set of rules. A useful first step is to separate the questions rather than look for one universal “esports betting rule.”

  • Market and licence: Where can the operator accept bets, and is it licensed for those markets?
  • Advertising and audience: Can people in a territory access the service, and what limits apply to gambling marketing or sponsorship there?
  • Publisher and tournament: Does the publisher or event permit the sponsor category, and where may its branding appear?
  • Integrity: What restrictions apply to players, staff, confidential information, monitoring, reporting, and investigations?
  • Status and timing: Is a requirement law, regulator guidance, a publisher policy, an event rule, or a proposal—and which version applies on the activation date?

These layers can overlap, but none substitutes for the others. The examples below are limited to Great Britain, two US state statutes, and a Riot Games policy announced in 2025; they are not a global survey.

What Great Britain’s rules mean for esports betting and sponsorship

Betting on esports falls within ordinary betting regulation

The UK Gambling Commission says betting on esports should be treated no differently from betting on another live event. Its position paper, Virtual currencies, eSports and social casino gaming, says the existing regulatory framework, rigorously applied, is sufficient to mitigate esports risks, while recognizing that those risks can manifest differently. The paper discusses age verification and gambling-marketing protections, as well as integrity concerns in an ecosystem without one governing body covering every game and tournament. This is the Commission’s position in that paper, not a claim that every competition has the same governing arrangements today.

The Commission also identifies children and young people’s exposure and event integrity as particular concerns. Esports’ digital format can create different routes for promotion and access than traditional live sport, so teams and organizers should consider where content appears and who may encounter it, not just whether a sponsor’s logo is on a physical venue.

Market access matters when a team promotes an operator

In guidance last updated on 18 February 2025, the Gambling Commission warns sports organizations that agreements with an unlicensed gambling operator can create serious legal exposure if the operator’s gambling services are accessible to consumers in Great Britain. The issue is not resolved simply by describing a service as aimed at another country: the Commission notes that geo-blocking may be circumvented, including through VPNs.

For a team or event considering a partnership, the relevant checks include the operator’s licensing and access controls, how it behaves in the markets reached by the promotion, the source of its funds, and reputational risk. The Commission also warns that integrity risks may be higher when betting takes place in markets beyond its and national governing bodies’ reach. Because the guidance is date-stamped, parties should check its current version and the rules in force when a deal is signed and activated.

A proposed UK sponsorship ban is not yet an enacted ban

A UK ministerial statement on 15 July 2026 described a consultation and the government’s intention to prohibit unlicensed gambling sponsorship and advertising across sectors. For sport, the proposed scope includes sponsorship on kit and equipment, tournament programmes, venue infrastructure, and event, league, and venue naming. The government described August 2027 as its preferred start date. The statement sets out a plan and preferred timetable; it does not establish that the proposed ban is already in force.

How integrity rules affect players, teams, and betting operators

Integrity controls are practical operating rules, not just a public-relations response to a scandal. The Gambling Commission’s esports position paper discusses ongoing risk assessment, suspicious-market monitoring, intelligence protocols, participant conduct rules, investigations, sanctions, and player education. It also identifies commercial agreements between gambling-interested companies and participants, teams, or leagues as an area needing appropriate controls.

In Great Britain, UK Gambling Commission Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP) Condition 4.2.8’s ordinary code says a licensee offering bets on a sport regulated by a specified governing body should take reasonable steps to learn that body’s betting rules, particularly rules for participants. It says the licensee should make bet validity conditional on customers observing relevant betting and inside-information rules, and take steps to void a bet if it identifies a breach. This is code guidance for licensees in the provision’s stated context; it is not a standalone statutory ban covering every esports participant or competition.

For an esports event, the practical question is which rulebook applies to that game and competition, and how it handles betting, nonpublic information, suspicious activity, investigations, and consequences. Players and staff may be subject to overlapping publisher, tournament, employer, operator, and local-law requirements.

What publisher and tournament rules can add: Riot’s 2025 example

On 26 June 2025, Riot Games said specified Tier 1 League of Legends and VALORANT teams in the Americas and EMEA could pursue betting sponsors, subject to vetting and approval. This is a policy for the covered Riot ecosystem, not a general esports rule or permission for every team, tier, region, or event.

Conditions and restrictions in Riot’s announcement

  • Potential betting sponsors must be vetted and approved.
  • Teams must use GRID to power betting offerings.
  • Teams must have integrity programs covering policy development, monitoring, and education.
  • Team-produced betting-related content remains subject to the sponsorship program, platform terms, and local rules.
  • Riot-owned broadcasts and social channels remain free of betting advertising and sponsored betting segments; team jerseys may not display betting-partner logos.

Riot President of Publishing & Esports John Needham said teams pursuing betting partnerships must have an integrity program that includes policy development, monitoring, and education. The restrictions show why publisher approval is not the same as unrestricted activation: a team may be permitted to sign a category partner while being barred from placing its logo on a jersey or inserting the sponsor into publisher-owned broadcasts.

Riot’s 2025 Esports Global Code of Conduct update separately addresses match-fixing, manipulation, and gambling. It describes accountability where relatives or affiliates contribute to violations, possible reporting of suspected national-law violations to the relevant agency, sanctions, and leadership accountability. A commercial sponsorship approval does not remove those conduct obligations.

How to read Riot’s market figures

Riot’s 26 June 2025 announcement attributed $10.7 billion in 2024 global betting turnover involving League of Legends Esports and VCT alone to Sportradar. Turnover is not revenue or profit, and the underlying Sportradar report was not separately reviewed for this article. Riot also cited a figure of 70% of bets across all sports being placed in unregulated markets, attributing it to bookmakers not licensed in those markets. That figure is Riot’s claim; it should not be treated as an independently verified measurement here.

What selected US state laws show

US sports-wagering requirements vary by state. These two examples illustrate different ways a state statute can connect esports competitions, publishers, and integrity controls; neither should be read as a national rule.

Jurisdiction What the cited law says Practical relevance
North Carolina North Carolina General Statutes § 18C-901 defines electronic sports to include leagues, competitive circuits, tournaments, or similar video-game competitions, typically for spectators and potentially for prizes, money, or entertainment. For an esports competition, it identifies the video-game publisher as the sports governing body regardless of where the competition occurs, and includes electronic sports within its definition of sporting events. A publisher may have a role in the statutory wagering framework, so teams and operators need to identify the publisher’s relevant rules as well as state requirements.
Massachusetts Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 23N, Section 11 requires operators to use commercially reasonable methods to prohibit specified sports participants and people with relevant confidential information from wagering in covered circumstances. It also provides for requests by sports governing bodies or players associations to restrict categories of wagering on integrity or consumer-protection grounds, and addresses reports of abnormal betting patterns and cooperation with integrity investigations. Operator controls, suspicious-betting reporting, and cooperation with investigations are explicit parts of this state’s framework.

What each stakeholder should check before a deal or event

Teams

  • Check gambling and advertising requirements in each market the sponsor’s service or team promotion can reach.
  • Confirm the publisher and event rules for the relevant game, tier, region, season, uniforms, channels, and activations.
  • Document sponsor vetting, access controls, player and staff conduct rules, integrity education, and procedures for responding to suspicious activity.
  • Address approval of content and creative, use of alternate uniforms where relevant, continuing checks, and termination triggers in the contract.

Sponsors and operators

  • Confirm that the operator is licensed in each target market and assess whether its service can be accessed where the sponsorship will be seen.
  • Establish which publisher, tournament, or governing-body requirements apply, including any official-data, participant, or monitoring conditions.
  • Agree who performs initial vetting and ongoing checks, how integrity concerns are reported, and how the parties will cooperate with an investigation.

Tournament organizers

  • Identify the publisher and other authorities that govern the specific title and event.
  • Set clear participant betting and inside-information rules, incident-reporting routes, investigation procedures, and sanctions.
  • Review commercial arrangements involving gambling-interested companies and define where sponsor branding and content are allowed.

Players and staff

  • Know which rules govern your event and employment, and whether they restrict betting on your own competition or other covered markets.
  • Treat nonpublic competitive information and suspicious betting approaches as integrity matters; follow the relevant reporting process.
  • Do not assume a team’s approved sponsorship means individual betting or sharing information is permitted.

How to assess a specific esports betting partnership

  1. Map the markets: List where bets can be accepted and where the team, event, sponsor content, or audience can be reached.
  2. Verify legal status: Check the operator’s licence and current advertising and sponsorship rules in each relevant jurisdiction.
  3. Identify the competition rulebook: Confirm the publisher, tournament organizer, governing body, applicable season, and any approval process.
  4. Define permitted activation: Specify allowed channels, uniforms, event assets, content, data, and audience controls; do not infer that one approved use permits another.
  5. Set integrity operations: Put participant rules, education, monitoring, reporting, investigations, sanctions, and cooperation responsibilities in writing.
  6. Check status and timing again: Distinguish laws in force from regulator code, publisher policy, event terms, and proposed changes, then re-check before launch and renewal.
