As of October 3, 2026, Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use GameChat. You also need a Nintendo Account and a persistent internet connection. You do not need a camera for voice chat: Switch 2 has a built-in microphone. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera, and children under 16 or supervised users need parental controls configured first.
Does GameChat require Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes. Nintendo says GameChat requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and a persistent internet connection. Nintendo’s membership FAQ describes Nintendo Switch Online as a paid service that includes GameChat: Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ.

The membership-free Open-Access Period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026. That period has ended, so older launch-period advice that GameChat is free to all Switch 2 owners is no longer current. Nintendo documents the dates in its GameChat Guide and FAQ. Membership plans and terms can vary by region; check Nintendo’s local service page for current options.

GameChat is a Nintendo Switch 2 feature. The console’s built-in microphone supports voice chat, so you do not need to buy a headset microphone or camera just to talk. Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ says the built-in mic lets players start chatting without an additional microphone.

For video chat
You need a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Nintendo’s GameChat feature page describes its Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as a USB-C camera designed for the console. It can be connected to the USB-C port on top of the console for TV, tabletop, and handheld play.
Other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee third-party compatibility. Do not assume that any USB webcam will work: connect it and use the Switch 2 system settings’ Test USB Camera feature to check. Nintendo Support says standard USB cameras can also connect through the dock; see the GameChat Guide and FAQ for the guidance.

Can a child use GameChat, and how do parents approve friends?
Nintendo requires GameChat parental controls to be set up in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app for users under 16 and supervised users. Nintendo’s parent and guardian setup guide describes creating a Nintendo Account family group with the child, linking the Switch 2 console to the app, and configuring controls before starting GameChat. A parent’s registered phone number is used for verification messages when a younger player wants to use GameChat.
Parents or guardians can approve individual friends in the app and withdraw approval later. A child or supervised user cannot use GameChat with an unapproved friend; if no friends are approved, the child cannot invite others or accept room invitations. Nintendo explains the controls in its Parental Controls overview and FAQ.
Set video permissions
Parents can require approval for camera use each session or disallow camera use. When approval is required per session, the child must request permission again for a new room. Parents can also limit what the camera shows to face only, person only, or full video. Nintendo notes that the camera permission setting does not restrict screen sharing; see the Parental Controls FAQ.

Review activity and report behavior
The app’s Play Activity and Monthly Summary can show who the child chatted with and for how long. These controls help parents manage contacts and visibility, but they are not a guarantee that every interaction will be safe. Nintendo says players can report offensive or harassing behavior; confirmed reports may result in actions such as suspension of the Nintendo Account. Details are in Nintendo’s GameChat overview and support FAQ.
Who can join a GameChat, and how many people can use video?
Nintendo describes GameChat rooms of up to 12 friends. Within a room, up to four players can use video chat and/or share their game screen in real time. Participants may be playing the same game, different games, or no game at all. Those limits describe GameChat, not a particular game’s multiplayer mode; a game may have its own requirements for copies, systems, or accessories. See Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ and feature overview.
Players need to be friends with one another to use GameChat. For a child or supervised user, the parent or guardian must also approve the contact through parental controls.
Is GameChat available everywhere?
No. Nintendo says GameChat is not available in every country. The requirements and setup above reflect Nintendo’s US-facing support information checked October 3, 2026; availability, membership terms, camera compatibility, and account or menu details may differ or change. Check Nintendo Support for your region before setting up the feature.
