Choose Sync.com if you want a cloud library for accessing and sharing files across devices; choose SpiderOakONE if your priority is backing up computer data for recovery. Both services also offer capabilities that overlap the other category, but they are not interchangeable: SpiderOak says its backup service is not a substitute for a cloud storage drive. This recommendation is an inference from the providers’ published descriptions, not a hands-on comparison.
Cloud storage and online backup solve different problems
A cloud storage service is meant to keep a library of files available from multiple devices and make sharing part of ordinary use. Sync.com presents itself this way, with syncing, sharing, cross-device access and real-time backup. SpiderOakONE is backup-first: it protects selected data from a computer and offers built-in sync and sharing.

The distinction matters when you delete or change a local file, replace a computer, or want to work with a shared folder. SpiderOak Support explains that users retain local copies while the service maintains online backups, and warns that backup is not a replacement for cloud storage, or vice versa. SpiderOak’s explanation of cloud storage and backup was updated July 23, 2025.

Which service fits your workflow?
Choose Sync.com for a private cloud library
Sync.com is the more natural fit if you want to open the same stored files on different devices, share links or folders, and treat the service as a cloud drive. It lists Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and browser access. The provider also describes real-time backup, but its central use case includes keeping and sharing an accessible cloud library. See Sync.com’s cloud storage overview.
Choose SpiderOakONE for restore-oriented backup
SpiderOakONE is the more natural fit if the main goal is to protect computer data and recover older versions or a point-in-time copy. Its product page includes backup, sync, sharing and historical versions, while its support material makes clear that the service is not intended as a cloud hard drive where you offload files and stop keeping them locally. The provider’s documented desktop coverage includes Windows, Mac and popular Linux distributions; the cited platform page is not a complete mobile compatibility matrix. See SpiderOak’s supported platforms article.

The figures below are the prices displayed on the providers’ official pages in October 2026. Prices and plan terms can change, so check the linked pages before buying. The Sync.com annual figures shown are first-year promotional totals, not renewal quotes; its page says plans renew at regular prices and taxes may apply.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How recovery history differs
Both services describe version or recovery features, but the stated retention conditions are different. Sync.com says recovery duration varies by plan; its free-plan page specifies up to 30 days of recovery and version history. SpiderOakONE’s FAQ says historical versions remain available as long as they fit within the storage allowance of the plan. For SpiderOak, that makes history retention dependent on available plan storage rather than a stated fixed number of days.
If recovery is your deciding factor, check the exact plan’s current retention terms and how deleted files, older versions and storage limits are handled. Sync’s free-plan page also lists 5 GB, up to five devices and up to three password-protected links; those are free-account allowances, not paid-plan terms. See Sync.com’s free-plan details and the SpiderOakONE FAQ.

What the encryption claims do—and do not—establish
Sync says files are encrypted before leaving a user’s device and describes end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge authentication. SpiderOak says it uses client-side or end-to-end encryption; its FAQ says the company cannot read files, filenames or folder structure. These are the vendors’ descriptions of their own systems, not an independent cryptographic audit or proof that the two implementations are equivalent. Read Sync.com’s security explanation and the SpiderOakONE FAQ.

What public information cannot settle
The cited official materials do not establish which service uploads or restores files faster, uses fewer computer resources, or is more reliable in practice. There is no controlled head-to-head performance evidence here, so those points should not be inferred from feature lists or encryption descriptions.
