Set Up Free AI Pull Request Reviews on a Public Repo in About 20 Minutes

You can add free AI feedback to pull requests on a public GitHub or GitLab repository using CodeRabbit. Allow about 20 minutes as a practical setup estimate—not a measured guarantee—and assume you already have a repository and can sign in with an account that has permission to install integrations. CodeRabbit’s free offer is for public repositories, is subject to rate limits, and does not include every paid feature. GitHub Copilot Free is not a free pull-request-review option.

What “free AI pull request reviews” covers

CodeRabbit says users can sign up with GitHub or GitLab, install its integration on a public repository, and receive free reviews there. Its open-source support information also says free use is rate-limited and excludes some paid features. This is a vendor-defined offer, not a promise of unlimited reviews or free coverage for private repositories. See CodeRabbit’s pricing page and its open-source support article for the current terms.

The steps below are a suggested workflow, not a tested installation report. The actual time depends on account access, repository permissions, and any installation approval your organization requires.

Set up CodeRabbit on a public repository

  1. Check visibility and permissions. Confirm the repository is public and that your account can install or authorize GitHub or GitLab integrations. If you cannot approve an installation, ask a repository owner or administrator to do so.
  2. Sign in to CodeRabbit. Use the GitHub or GitLab sign-in option associated with the repository you want reviewed.
  3. Install the integration. Authorize CodeRabbit and choose the public repository for which you want reviews. Review the requested access and any organization approval prompt before proceeding.
  4. Open a small test pull request. Make a modest, easy-to-inspect change and open a pull request in the connected repository. This gives you a low-risk way to confirm the integration is active.
  5. Check for the review. Look at the pull request conversation and review activity for CodeRabbit feedback. If it does not appear, check whether the app is installed for the correct repository and whether the installation or organization approval is complete; consult CodeRabbit’s current support information for service-specific behavior.

Use the 20-minute figure as a planning estimate for this short path, not as a service-level promise. A private repository, missing permissions, or an approval queue can change the setup substantially.

Can GitHub Copilot Free review pull requests?

No. GitHub Copilot Free does not include GitHub pull request code review. GitHub’s plan page lists code review as starting with Pro, while Copilot Free’s included completions and chat are separate benefits. GitHub Docs lists Copilot Free limits of 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests; those are not pull-request-review allowances. Check the current GitHub Copilot plans and Copilot plan setup and eligibility documentation.

GitHub says most eligible individual developers can start Copilot Free without setup, but some account situations are ineligible. That easy access does not change which features the free plan includes.

If you already have a Copilot plan with code review

Request a review manually

On a pull request, select Copilot under the Reviewers section to request a review. From GitHub CLI, use one of these commands:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a new pull request: gh pr create --reviewer @copilot
  • For an existing pull request: gh pr edit PR-NUMBER --add-reviewer @copilot, replacing PR-NUMBER with the pull request number.

GitHub documents this manual flow in Using GitHub Copilot code review.

Configure automatic reviews

For personal accounts, GitHub documents automatic Copilot code review in Copilot settings for your own pull requests. Personal automatic review requires Copilot Pro, Pro+, or Max. Review-new-pushes and draft reviews are optional settings. For organization-managed use, administrators can configure organization settings and rulesets. Follow GitHub’s current automatic code review configuration guide.
