First find out which stage reports the error: your encoder may not be reaching the Switchboard workflow, the encoder may be using the wrong workflow’s ingest details, or YouTube may be rejecting the stream. The message alone does not identify the cause. Check the Switchboard workflow preview and connection status, verify the selected workflow’s Stream URL and Stream Key, then compare the encoder’s output with Switchboard’s published baseline. Change a YouTube stream key only if YouTube Live Control Room reports an encoder-start error.
Identify where the error appears
A Switchboard workflow receives an ingest feed from your encoder and then sends it to the destinations selected in that workflow. That creates two separate checks: whether Switchboard is receiving video, and whether YouTube is accepting delivery from Switchboard. A working preview at the first stage does not, by itself, prove that YouTube accepted the stream.

- Error or disconnected status in Switchboard: start with the workflow preview, status and ingest details.
- Encoder-start error in YouTube Live Control Room: check YouTube’s stream-key guidance in the YouTube branch below.
- The wording appears somewhere else: note the application and exact screen before changing settings. The wording “encoder settings are invalid” does not map to one confirmed cause.
Check the Switchboard workflow and incoming feed
- Open the workflow you intend to use in Switchboard and inspect its confidence monitor and status.
- Check for incoming activity. Switchboard says that when the confidence monitor has no activity and the status is not “Encoder Connected,” it is not receiving video and cannot send it to destinations.
- Confirm the selected workflow. Each workflow has its own RTMP information, so make sure your encoder is set up for the workflow you are viewing rather than another workflow.
- Copy that workflow’s current Stream URL and Stream Key from Switchboard into the corresponding server/URL and stream-key fields in your encoder. Check for a missing character, extra space, or value copied from an old or different workflow.
- Start or restart the encoder output and watch the workflow preview and status again. If Switchboard still shows no incoming activity, focus on the encoder-to-Switchboard connection and settings; changing a YouTube key will not fix a feed that is not reaching Switchboard.
Compare your encoder output with Switchboard’s baseline
Switchboard’s published minimum-settings guidance gives the following baseline. These are Switchboard recommendations, not a complete statement of every current YouTube requirement. If you are targeting a particular YouTube resolution, check YouTube’s current guidance for that resolution as well.
| Setting | Switchboard baseline |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | At least 720p (1280 × 720) at 30 fps |
| Video bitrate | At least 2000 Kbps (2 Mbps) |
| Audio bitrate | At least 96 Kbps |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate), as stated in Switchboard’s initial-setup guidance |
| Keyframe interval | An I-frame at least every two seconds; the initial-setup guidance specifies a two-second interval |
| Video codec and profile | H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10), Main profile |
In the encoder, locate the output or streaming settings and compare the actual values—not just a preset’s name—with this list. Switchboard’s initial-setup guidance specifies 30 or 60 fps. Its minimum-settings article notes that Facebook and YouTube support 1080p (1920 × 1080), but that note is not a full YouTube specification. Do not assume that raising resolution or bitrate will solve a connection or credential problem; first make sure the feed reaches the intended workflow.

If YouTube Live Control Room reports an encoder-start error
This is a separate branch from a Switchboard workflow showing no incoming video. YouTube’s guidance for an encoder-start error is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get a new stream key using YouTube’s stream setup controls.
- Replace the existing key in the encoder with the new one, taking care not to leave an old value in a saved profile or workflow.
- Start the encoder again and check the status in YouTube Live Control Room.
Use this remedy when YouTube reports the encoder-start error; the available guidance does not establish that every message described as invalid settings is caused by a stale key. If Switchboard still has no incoming activity, return to the workflow and ingest checks instead.

Retest by observing the reporting stage
- Switchboard preview remains inactive or status is not “Encoder Connected”: Switchboard is not receiving the encoder feed. Recheck the intended workflow’s Stream URL and Stream Key, then the encoder’s output settings.
- Switchboard shows incoming video, but YouTube reports an encoder-start error: follow YouTube’s new-stream-key instruction and retest in Live Control Room.
- The workflow is connected but the message persists: record where the message appears and the exact encoder application or device, workflow, ingest protocol and output values. The message alone is not enough to determine which setting is invalid.
Common causes and fixes
| What you observe | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No activity in the Switchboard confidence monitor; status is not “Encoder Connected” | Switchboard is not receiving video | Verify the encoder is using the current Stream URL and Stream Key for the workflow you intend to use, then compare its output with the baseline above. |
| Encoder details do not match the workflow open in Switchboard | Ingest details may belong to another workflow or be out of date | Copy the selected workflow’s current Stream URL and Stream Key into the encoder. |
| YouTube Live Control Room reports an encoder-start error | YouTube’s key-specific remedy applies to this error | Get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| Switchboard shows incoming activity, but the error’s source is unclear | The workflow preview establishes incoming video, not YouTube acceptance | Check YouTube Live Control Room separately and identify which screen produced the message before changing credentials or settings. |
Copyright and the content you stream
Encoder configuration does not establish that you have the right to stream the video, music or other material in your program. Use content you own or are authorised to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetisation where those apply. A technical connection or successful preview is not approval of the content, and changing bitrate, profile or stream key will not resolve a rights issue.
