OBS can help control loud peaks within a lesson, but its compressor does not automatically match the average loudness of separate lesson clips. To make a study stream sound consistent, balance each lesson source by listening, use compression only where its volume varies too much, and put a limiter last to catch peaks. Record and listen back to a representative session before going live.
What “normalize audio” means in OBS
There are two different problems that often get called normalization. One is a level mismatch between separate lesson files: one recording sounds quieter than another. The other is a wide dynamic range within a single file, where speech alternates between quiet and loud passages. They need different treatments.

For differences between lessons, compare and adjust each source’s gain or mixer fader. An OBS compressor reduces signal above a threshold, which can control peaks within a source; it does not guarantee equal average loudness across separate clips. A limiter catches excessive peaks but does not raise quiet sections.
| Approach | What it addresses | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Per-source gain or fader balancing | Baseline level differences between lessons or other separate sources | Requires listening and adjustment for each source or clip |
| Compressor followed by limiter | Variation within a source and peaks that may be too high | Does not ensure equal average loudness between lesson files |
| YouTube playback enhancements | May smooth some playback differences for some videos and viewers | YouTube says enhancements are not applied to every video, and viewers may have controls |
OBS describes its compressor as a tool for making loud sounds quieter and says it typically belongs at or near the beginning of a filter chain. Its limiter documentation says to place the limiter last. OBS Compressor Filter · OBS Limiter Filter

Balance separate lessons before streaming
- Identify the audio path. Work out whether the lessons are separate media sources, browser audio, desktop audio, or already mixed together. Confirm that each lesson reaches the OBS mixer channel you expect; routing depends on your scenes and capture setup.
- Set a clean starting level. Start at the playback device or application, then check the operating-system level and OBS. Change one point at a time, listen both at the source and as audio reaches OBS, and avoid clipping the output. OBS recommends monitoring audio and listening back to a normal-session recording. OBS Audio Mixer Guide · OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details
- Compare representative passages. Play a typical spoken section from each lesson and compare perceived speech level at the same listening volume. Adjust that source’s gain or fader until the lessons sit in a similar range. There is no universally correct fader value: recordings can have different levels and dynamics.
- Check transitions. Listen when the stream moves between lessons. A consistent level within each file may still sound abrupt if the next source is substantially louder or quieter.
When and how to use OBS audio filters
Gain: raise a consistently quiet source
Use a gain filter when a source is consistently too quiet, while watching its peaks and preserving headroom. Gain raises the signal; it does not reduce the difference between quiet and loud passages. OBS Filters Guide
Compressor: control variation within one source
Add a compressor to a source when its quiet and loud passages vary enough to distract from listening. Lowering the threshold makes compression begin at a lower signal level; a higher ratio applies stronger reduction above the threshold. Attack and release shape how quickly the compressor responds.

OBS’s displayed defaults are a threshold of -18 dB, a 10:1 ratio, a 6 ms attack, a 60 ms release, and 0 dB output gain. Treat these as software defaults, not recommended settings for every voice or lesson. OBS says the compressor is typically placed near the beginning of the filter chain. OBS Compressor Filter

Add a limiter last in the relevant filter chain to catch peaks above its threshold. OBS documents a default threshold of -6 dB and a 60 ms release; these are defaults, not mandatory values. Lowering the threshold caps peaks lower, but does not make quiet speech louder. Tune it while monitoring the audio and meter. OBS Limiter Filter

Noise tools are for noise, not lesson matching
Noise gates and suppression can help address unwanted background noise, but they do not match the loudness of separate lesson sources. OBS Filters Guide
Avoid stacking heavy compression and large output gain without checking the result. Compressor output gain raises the level after compression, which can use up peak headroom before the limiter. Set filters against actual lesson material and listen rather than copying a preset blindly. OBS Compressor Filter · OBS Limiter Filter

Read the OBS meter without confusing peaks for loudness
OBS uses dBFS, where 0 dBFS is the maximum representable digital level; exceeding it can cause clipping and distortion. Its technical guide describes -20 dBFS as an alignment level chosen near average speech and -9 dBFS as a permitted maximum in its meter guidance, with headroom intended to reduce clipping risk. These are OBS meter references, not universal streaming targets or YouTube requirements. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details

A peak meter shows short-term peaks; a peak reading alone does not tell you how loud a whole lesson sounds to a listener. OBS also discusses a VU indicator that integrates RMS over 300 ms, which it says is closer to sound pressure than its peak meter, while noting that a proper loudness meter based on ITU-R BS.1770-2 could replace it. The cited OBS guidance does not set an integrated LUFS target for YouTube study streams, so do not treat dBFS meter readings as LUFS.

Test the complete stream and account for YouTube playback
Record a representative session that includes lesson changes and the loudest passage you expect to stream. Listen to the recording: check that quiet speech is intelligible, loud passages are controlled, and transitions do not cause sudden jumps. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
YouTube says playback enhancements can include automatic adjustments to volume levels and sound mixing, Stable volume to reduce variation between quiet and loud parts, and Voice boost to highlight speech. But YouTube also says, “They are not applied to every video.” Treat these as a possible playback aid, not a substitute for balancing your OBS sources. Creators can manage the default setting for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer; viewer settings and accessibility preferences may also affect playback. Troubleshoot common level problems
- One lesson is much quieter than the rest: compare its source level and OBS fader with the others, then raise that source carefully while watching for peaks. A limiter will not lift it.
- Speech jumps between quiet and loud within one lesson: try a compressor on that source and tune by listening. Lower the threshold to begin compression earlier or adjust the ratio for stronger reduction above threshold.
- The meter looks safe but the lesson still sounds quiet: the meter’s peak reading is not an integrated loudness measurement. Compare the spoken passages by ear at the same listening volume, then record and listen back.
- Peaks distort or sound harsh: check for clipping at the source, operating-system, and OBS stages; reduce the level where it first occurs. A limiter last can catch remaining peaks, but cannot repair distortion already introduced upstream.
- The next lesson suddenly changes level: balance the new source against the prior one using representative passages; do not assume the compressor or YouTube will equalize separate files.
- A YouTube viewer still hears uneven playback: playback enhancements are not applied to every video, and viewer settings can differ. Make the OBS mix consistent before relying on platform processing.
