Switch 2 Joy-Con or Controller Not Pairing After an Update: How to Fix It

Check the Switch 2 system update and dock cable, then reconnect with Change Grip Order and SYNC. Use separate recovery steps for failed controller updates or Search for Controllers issues.

If a Joy-Con 2 or other Nintendo Switch 2 controller stopped pairing after an update, first check the console’s system software, then reconnect the controller through Controllers > Change Grip Order and press its SYNC button. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem; Nintendo’s guidance also calls for checking the dock’s HDMI cable and gives separate steps for failed controller firmware updates.

Start with the right controller and symptom

These steps are for Nintendo Switch 2 and its Joy-Con 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller—not the original Switch’s Joy-Con. Nintendo’s Switch 2 pairing guidance addresses wireless pairing problems and controllers that disconnect soon after pairing. It does not identify a general post-update bug or say that an update is necessarily the cause.

If the controller update itself failed, use the dedicated recovery steps below. If the trouble began after using Search for Controllers, follow that feature’s specific reset sequence rather than treating it as a universal fix.

Check the console update and dock cable

  1. On the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Update and check for an available console update.
  2. If the console is docked, check that the dock is connected with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo says the HDMI cable included with the original Nintendo Switch is not an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and warns that using the wrong HDMI type may affect console and accessory performance. This is a prescribed check, not proof that the cable caused the controller issue.

Reconnect the controller

If you changed the dock’s HDMI cable, or the controller still will not connect, use Nintendo’s Switch 2 pairing flow:

If a controller firmware update failed

Nintendo Support Australia publishes this recovery sequence for a failed controller update. Follow it in order:

  1. Check that the Switch 2 has the latest system update.
  2. Restart the console by opening POWER > Power Options > Restart.
  3. Press the affected controller’s SYNC button once.
  4. Press another button on the controller to power it on again.
  5. Retry the controller update.

Nintendo says paired controllers are updated one at a time, and advises trying the update again if it stops before completion. If the sequence does not resolve the failure, Nintendo Support Australia says the console and affected controllers need to be returned for assessment. That is Australia-specific service guidance; use Nintendo Support for your own region to find the applicable repair route.

If the problem followed Search for Controllers

Nintendo Support UK provides a separate sequence for a controller that stops responding after use of Search for Controllers. The feature requires that the controller has already been paired.

  1. Wait 30 seconds before taking further action.
  2. Press the controller’s SYNC button once.
  3. Press A or another button to power it on.
  4. Pair it again.

If it still cannot pair or respond to the console, Nintendo says the affected controller needs repair. This advice is specific to the Search for Controllers scenario.

Work out whether the controller or console needs service

If Joy-Con 2 is recognized but its player LEDs do not light, Nintendo recommends attaching and detaching the controllers a few times, resetting with SYNC, updating controller firmware, and testing another set of Joy-Con 2 if one is available.

  • Another set works: Nintendo says the problematic Joy-Con 2 needs service.
  • Another set also fails, or you cannot test another set: Nintendo says the problematic Joy-Con 2 and Switch 2 may need service.

This test helps distinguish a controller fault from a console-side problem before you decide whether to seek service for one device or both.

Joy-Con™ 2 (L)/(R) Blue/Light Yellow
  • These updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have a color scheme inspired by Deep Cut from the Splatoon franchise. They have HD rumble, easy-to-use motion and mouse controls, and a C Button for easy GameChat* access (available in compatible games).

When older Switch advice does—and does not—apply

Nintendo’s wireless pairing guidance for the original Nintendo Switch also mentions reducing the distance between devices, checking for wireless interference and battery charge, and confirming the game supports the controller and has not reached its player limit. Those are original-Switch recommendations; Nintendo’s Switch 2 pairing guidance cited here does not establish them as Switch 2-specific fixes. Do not substitute original Switch instructions for the Switch 2 steps above.

Should you buy another controller?

A replacement is not the first troubleshooting step. If testing points to a Joy-Con 2 fault, contact Nintendo Support about service. Consider another set only if you need one or Nintendo’s diagnosis indicates the controller is the problem; buying another controller is not a guaranteed fix if the console is involved. A Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is an alternative controller, not a repair for a pairing fault.
