To type lowercase ñ or uppercase Ñ, use the method for your device: on a Windows numeric keypad, hold Alt and enter 164 or 165; in Microsoft Word, enter 00F1 or 00D1 and press Alt+X; on a Mac, press Option+N, release, then press N or Shift+N. Linux instructions vary by desktop environment.
Choose the right method for your device
| Device or app | Type ñ | Type Ñ | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows with a numeric keypad | Hold Alt and type 164 | Hold Alt and type 165 | Enter the digits on the numeric keypad, not the number row. Num Lock may need to be on. Microsoft explains the keypad requirement and codes. |
| Microsoft Word | Type 00F1, then press Alt+X | Type 00D1, then press Alt+X | This is Word’s Unicode conversion, not a Windows-wide Alt-code shortcut. Microsoft documents this method. |
| Mac | Option+N, release, then N | Option+N, release, then Shift+N | Option+N starts a dead-key sequence; the second keystroke completes the character. Tech Pilipinas describes this sequence. |
| GNOME or another GTK Linux desktop | Ctrl+Shift+U, release, type 00F1, then Space or Enter | Ctrl+Shift+U, release, type 00D1, then Space or Enter | This Unicode entry sequence is documented for GTK environments, not every Linux desktop. Unicode’s keyboard FAQ explains the desktop distinction. |
| KDE or another Qt desktop | Use a character selection tool, such as KCharSelect | Unicode says KDE/Qt does not provide the equivalent built-in Ctrl+Shift+U sequence. See the Unicode keyboard FAQ. | |
| Phone or tablet | Try pressing and holding n or N, then choose ñ or Ñ if offered | Options depend on the active on-screen keyboard. Tech Pilipinas notes this variation. | |
Type ñ or Ñ in Windows
Use the numeric keypad Alt code
- Turn on Num Lock if your keyboard requires it.
- Hold down Alt.
- On the numeric keypad, type 164 for ñ or 165 for Ñ.
- Release Alt.
The numeric keypad matters: the digits across the top of a standard keyboard generally do not substitute for it in this method. If your laptop has no separate keypad, use Word’s conversion method or a character picker instead.

Use Unicode conversion in Word
In Microsoft Word, type 00F1 and press Alt+X to convert it to ñ. For Ñ, type 00D1 and press Alt+X. If the code is next to other hexadecimal characters, select only the four code characters before pressing Alt+X; otherwise Word may include adjacent text in the conversion. The code points are U+00F1 for ñ and U+00D1 for Ñ. Microsoft’s instructions include the conversion and selection details.
Alt+X is application-specific. It should not be treated as a universal Windows shortcut; behavior for hexadecimal entry differs between applications, as Unicode’s keyboard FAQ notes.

Type enye on a Mac
Press Option+N, release both keys, then press N for ñ or Shift+N for Ñ. Option+N acts as a dead key, so the character is completed by the next letter key rather than appearing immediately. This sequence is reported by Tech Pilipinas.
Use Unicode Hex Input if you need code-point entry
macOS also supports Unicode Hex Input as an input source. Enable it in Keyboard settings, switch to that input source, hold Option, and type 00F1 or 00D1. This requires setup; it is separate from the quicker Option+N dead-key sequence. Unicode describes Unicode Hex Input and other character-entry options.

Type ñ or Ñ on Linux
GNOME and GTK applications
- Press Ctrl+Shift+U, then release the keys.
- Type 00F1 for ñ or 00D1 for Ñ.
- Press Space or Enter to enter the character.
This sequence is documented for GNOME and other GTK environments; it is not a shortcut to assume works across all Linux desktops. Unicode’s FAQ scopes the method and describes alternatives.

KDE and Qt applications
Unicode says KDE and other Qt environments do not have an equivalent built-in Ctrl+Shift+U sequence. Use a character-selection utility such as KDE’s KCharSelect, or another configured input method, to find and insert the character. Unicode’s keyboard FAQ covers this limitation.

Use a character picker when a shortcut is unavailable
A character picker is a practical fallback if your keyboard lacks a numeric keypad, an application does not support a particular conversion, or you only need the letter occasionally. Search for and select ñ or Ñ in Windows Character Map, macOS Character Viewer, GNOME Character Map, or KDE KCharSelect. Many applications also provide an Insert Symbol or similar menu. Unicode lists character-selection tools as an alternative to keyboard sequences: Unicode keyboard FAQ.

Troubleshoot a shortcut that does not work
- Windows Alt code inserts nothing or the wrong character: Check that Alt stayed held while you entered the digits on the numeric keypad, and turn on Num Lock if needed. The top-row number keys are not the keypad input expected by this method.
- Your laptop has no numeric keypad: Use Word’s 00F1/00D1 plus Alt+X conversion, a character map, or the application’s symbol picker rather than assuming the top number row will work.
- Word’s Alt+X produces an unexpected result: Check that the code is exactly 00F1 or 00D1, and select only those digits if other hexadecimal characters are adjacent. Microsoft also notes that font and character support can affect insertion; see its character insertion guidance.
- Linux Ctrl+Shift+U does not respond: Confirm that you are in a GNOME/GTK context. KDE/Qt does not have the same built-in sequence according to Unicode; use a character selection tool instead.
- Your phone does not show ñ on a long press: The available variants depend on the keyboard app and language settings. Try its character picker or a keyboard that offers ñ; there is no official hexadecimal-code input method for iOS or Android described by Unicode’s keyboard FAQ.
