SVM Mode is AMD’s firmware setting for CPU virtualization. When enabled, it lets compatible virtual-machine software use AMD-V hardware capabilities; it does not install a virtual machine app or turn on Windows Hyper-V by itself. Whether you need it depends on the software you want to run.
What is SVM mode in BIOS?
SVM stands for Secure Virtual Machine. On AMD systems, SVM Mode controls whether the processor’s virtualization capabilities are available to a virtual machine monitor (VMM). A motherboard manual describes the enabled setting as allowing a VMM to use the additional hardware capabilities provided by AMD-V (ASRock WRX80 Creator manual, section 4.4.1).

SVM and AMD-V refer to the AMD side of processor-assisted virtualization. Intel uses the term VT-x for its corresponding CPU virtualization technology. SVM is also distinct from IOMMU: they are separate firmware options, and IOMMU concerns device access for particular advanced configurations rather than being another name for basic CPU virtualization.

Enable SVM if software you intend to use requires AMD hardware virtualization—for example, a virtual machine application or a Windows virtualization feature. If you do not use software that needs it, enabling SVM is not a general-purpose performance upgrade. The official documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal performance change from simply turning it on.

The firmware setting is only one part of the setup. The operating-system feature or application must still be installed, supported by your system, and configured. For Hyper-V specifically, Microsoft lists Windows 10 or 11 Pro or Enterprise, a 64-bit processor with SLAT and VM Monitor Mode extensions, hardware-enforced DEP, enabled virtualization in BIOS/UEFI, and at least 4 GB of RAM. Microsoft recommends checking the host with Systeminfo.exe and its Hyper-V requirements guidance. These are Hyper-V requirements, not a universal checklist for every VM product.
How do I enable SVM mode?
-
Restart the PC and enter its BIOS/UEFI setup. The key or on-screen method varies by manufacturer; check the computer or motherboard documentation if you are unsure.

For one ASUS motherboard example, the path is Advanced > CPU Configuration > SVM Mode > Enabled; ASUS instructs users to press F10 to save and restart (ASUS support instructions, updated June 13, 2025). This menu path and key are not universal. Microsoft likewise advises users to follow device-maker instructions and warns that changing unrelated firmware settings can prevent Windows from starting (Microsoft Support’s UEFI guidance).
Why can’t I find SVM mode in BIOS?
Menu names and locations differ across motherboard makers, computer models, and firmware versions. Some systems place the option under CPU configuration or an advanced menu; some laptops may not expose a user-accessible control. Search the maker’s documentation for your exact model rather than changing unrelated options.

If the system uses an AMD Ryzen processor and its board documentation or manufacturer support identifies a processor-compatibility problem, a BIOS update may be relevant. AMD advises obtaining firmware and instructions from the system or motherboard maker; an update is not a routine step just to enable SVM (AMD BIOS update guidance, updated August 12, 2026).

Why does my virtual machine say AMD-V is unavailable?
If SVM appears enabled but an application still reports that AMD-V is unavailable, verify the firmware setting after restarting, then check the application’s current compatibility guidance and Windows virtualization status. Windows features such as Hyper-V, Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, WSL2, Windows Sandbox, VBS, or Memory Integrity can affect how third-party virtualization software operates on some configurations. MSI documents these interactions for supported notebooks and emphasizes that behavior depends on model and configuration (MSI’s virtualization troubleshooting guidance, updated August 5, 2026).
Do not begin by disabling VBS, Memory Integrity, or Hyper-V. These features provide security protections or support Windows functionality, and turning them off can reduce protection or affect features that rely on them. Follow the VM application maker’s troubleshooting procedure and weigh the security trade-off before changing Windows settings.
