In everyday computer conversations, “memory” usually means RAM. Technically, RAM is one type of memory, while the broader term includes other components such as cache, registers and ROM. RAM is temporary working space; an SSD is persistent storage for files, not another name for RAM.
Why people use “memory” to mean RAM
When someone asks how much “memory” a computer has, they often mean its RAM. That shorthand is common in ordinary PC discussions, but it is not technically precise: memory is the wider category, and RAM is one kind within it. IBM describes RAM as hardware that temporarily holds data used in active operations. IBM’s DIMM overview explains the term and the role of RAM.

What RAM does
RAM gives a computer fast, temporary space for data it is using now. Most semiconductor RAM is volatile: its contents are lost when power is removed. The Computer History Museum defines RAM as read/write memory and notes that most semiconductor RAM is volatile. Computer History Museum’s glossary provides this technical context.

| Question | RAM | SSD storage |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Temporarily holds data the computer is actively using. | Stores files for later retrieval. |
| What happens without power? | Most semiconductor RAM loses its contents. | Files remain stored without continuous power. |
| Common physical form | Often supplied as a memory module. | Storage hardware; not a RAM module. |
IBM distinguishes the two by function: RAM gives the CPU access to data it is working with, while storage retains data for later. An SSD’s capacity and a computer’s RAM capacity therefore describe different things. IBM’s data storage overview explains persistent storage.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Memory includes more than RAM
In technical usage, “memory” can refer to several kinds or levels of computer memory. IBM identifies ROM, cache and registers alongside RAM. They are not interchangeable names for RAM, and the broad term does not mean every kind serves the same role.

Desktop memory modules are commonly DIMMs; laptops commonly use smaller SO-DIMMs. The form factor alone does not establish compatibility, and a DIMM should not be assumed to fit a laptop or vice versa. Check the exact computer’s specifications before purchasing, including which memory type it supports. IBM describes DIMMs as common modular computer memory hardware containing RAM chips.
