No—not merely because the HTTP request timed out or its response went missing. A timeout does not tell you whether the server verified the payment, performed the work, or settled it. If the documented flow supports retrying the same payment, resend the original request with its exact original PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. A fresh signature may create a distinct authorization, while duplicate delivery is a separate risk that replay protection alone does not eliminate.
Why signing again can turn an uncertain result into a second payment
x402 involves a client, a resource server, and potentially a facilitator; payment creation and settlement depend on the selected scheme and network. In the default flow described by the protocol, the client receives payment requirements and submits a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. The server verifies it locally or through a facilitator, performs the protected work after successful verification, and then settles directly or through a facilitator. Schemes can define other flows.

That sequence leaves several points where a failure can occur: after verification, during the paid operation, during settlement, or while the response is being returned. If the client sees only a timeout, it cannot infer which stage the first attempt reached. Creating a new signature may produce a new payment authorization—for example, when the scheme uses a fresh nonce or transaction. Whether that can result in another charge depends on the scheme and implementation; it is not guaranteed that every second signature will be charged.

There is a separate application risk: a repeated accepted payment attempt may cause the service to fulfill the same request more than once. The x402 Foundation’s exact-scheme specification puts the distinction plainly: “The network primitive prevents double-spend, not double-delivery.” A chain-level replay check does not, by itself, stop an application from repeating the paid work or sending the result twice.

What to do when an x402 request times out
- Keep the original operation intact. Preserve the request data and exact signed payload, including the original
PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. If a retry may happen after a process restart, persist them rather than relying on memory. - Check the specific scheme and service’s retry rules. Retry behavior, replay protection, and retention windows are not uniform across x402 implementations.
- If that flow supports resuming the payment, resend the same request and signature. Do not mint a new authorization solely because no HTTP response arrived.
- Use one stable operation identifier if the service supports it. Confirm what the identifier covers and what the service does with concurrent or repeated requests; the identifier is not a protocol-wide guarantee.
- Resolve the original attempt before starting a new logical purchase. Use the service’s documented status or support path if available. Do not assume a refund or reversal happens automatically after a failed response.
Cardano’s official x402 scheme documentation gives a concrete, scheme-specific example: for a pending settlement, the client repeats the original PAYMENT-SIGNATURE rather than building another transaction, while the service resumes observation of the same canonical transaction. This is a Cardano rule, not a universal instruction for every x402 scheme. The same guidance warns that the protected operation may run once per paid retry before final settlement evidence, so the application must tolerate that possibility.
What replay protection does—and does not—guarantee
A scheme’s network replay primitive is authoritative for whether an authorization has already been consumed. The exact-scheme specification says a consumed primitive must fail settlement: “A consumed primitive MUST produce a settlement failure, never a success.” That protects against spending the same primitive twice under the specified rules.

It does not ensure that a service delivers only once. The exact-scheme specification calls for an atomic settlement-deduplication claim shared across all processes serving /settle where repeated submissions could otherwise appear successful. The deduplication key must be retained for as long as the payment could still land. Separately, the application needs protection around the paid resource operation itself: a settlement claim and a fulfillment claim solve related but distinct problems.
How clients, servers, and facilitators should handle retries
Client: preserve the same intent
- Associate a stable identity with the logical operation when the implementation supports payment identifiers.
- Store the exact signed payload and enough request data to retry it byte-for-byte.
- On uncertain completion, follow the service’s documented semantics instead of producing a second authorization by default.
For example, FortiSwap documents an optional identifier for a logical operation: changing the signed payment under the same identifier conflicts, and its in-memory idempotency store has a 15-minute window. Those are FortiSwap-specific implementation details, not x402-wide guarantees; its documentation instructs clients to resend the same request and signed header.

Resource server: bind proof to the intended request
- Bind payment proof to the applicable payment requirements and intended request, including relevant resource and request fields.
- Where the scheme requires a one-time claim before protected work, make that claim atomically.
- Protect fulfillment from duplicate execution or delivery, even when chain-level replay protection is present.
Facilitator and settlement service: coordinate duplicate claims
- If the same submitted payload can be accepted repeatedly at a transport or facilitator layer, deduplicate settlement atomically across every process serving settlement.
- Share the claim state across those processes; per-process caches can leave a race between workers.
- Keep deduplication state through the period in which the payment authorization can still land.
Solana’s official guidance also emphasizes checking expiry and replay status, waiting for the required confirmation level, and ensuring a retry cannot settle or fulfill the same purchase twice. The confirmation policy and exact header or network names are version-specific; Solana’s guide distinguishes V2 from V1.
Questions to ask before trusting an “idempotent” payment flow
The word “idempotent” is not enough to establish what happens in a timeout or race. Check the implementation on each of these points:

Version and scope
The protocol and scheme guidance cited here describes x402 V2 documentation accessed on October 7, 2026. The official repository and scheme documents are maintained on a moving branch, so behavior can change. For an incident or production integration, verify the exact scheme, network, and implementation version in use; do not transfer one provider’s cache window or one scheme’s retry rule to another.
