Choose Supabase when your app needs PostgreSQL or can benefit from a managed platform that bundles database access with services such as authentication, storage and realtime. Choose Turso when SQLite compatibility, many small tenant databases, edge-oriented reads or an embedded local-first workflow better matches the app. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on your data model, connection pattern, write and consistency needs, and the full monthly cost of your workload.

Supabase vs. Turso at a glance

Decision Supabase points toward Turso points toward Check before choosing
Database model PostgreSQL features, tools and integrations SQLite-compatible SQL and a database-per-tenant or file-oriented model Required SQL features, extensions, types, constraints, migration effort, ORM and driver support
Serverless access A transaction-mode shared pooler for short-lived connections, or the Data API when suitable A product positioned for async I/O and serverless or edge workloads Driver restrictions, connection setup, runtime behavior and current client support
Reads across regions A primary region plus separately deployed read replicas; eligible Data API reads can be geo-routed Vendor-described replicas near users and embedded replicas Read freshness, write routing, geography and which services can route globally
Offline or local-first app A centralized PostgreSQL primary and optional remote read replicas Embedded replicas that can sync on demand Offline behavior, sync and conflict handling, recovery, data volume and feature maturity
Integrated platform services Database plus services such as Auth, Storage, Realtime and deployment workflows A database-focused option for independently composed stacks Which auth, storage, realtime, observability, migration and preview services your app needs

These are architecture-based recommendations, not the result of comparative performance tests. Supabase’s database is PostgreSQL; Turso targets SQLite-compatible use cases. Turso’s product description calls Turso Database a ground-up rewrite, while the Turso-maintained libSQL project describes libSQL as an open-source fork of SQLite. Treat the names as distinct rather than assuming every libSQL property applies to Turso Database, or vice versa. See Turso’s product description.

What does your application need from its database?

Choose Supabase for PostgreSQL and an integrated service surface

If PostgreSQL compatibility is a requirement, Supabase is the natural fit between these two options. It can also reduce integration work when the app needs managed authentication, storage, realtime features or Supabase deployment workflows alongside its database. That broader service surface is useful only if those services match your app; it is not a reason by itself to choose PostgreSQL.

Choose Turso when SQLite compatibility or local data is central

Turso merits a closer look when SQLite-compatible SQL fits the application, when you want a separate small database for each tenant, or when an embedded database replica is central to a local-first or offline-capable design. Confirm the specific Turso product, client and behavior you intend to use: offline operation makes synchronization and reconnection behavior part of the application design, not just a database-location decision.

Check compatibility before you commit

List the SQL features, types, constraints, extensions and migration behavior the app actually relies on. Then confirm your ORM and database driver support the chosen product. A migration from one database model to another can require application changes, so test the schema and important queries before treating compatibility as a simple connection-string swap.

How will serverless functions connect?

Supabase: use a connection pattern that suits the runtime

Supabase distinguishes among frontend access, serverless or edge functions, persistent backends and migrations in its database connection guide. For serverless and edge functions, it documents a shared pooler in transaction mode because these environments open many short-lived connections. A transaction-mode pooler releases its connection after each transaction, so session state does not persist; the guide identifies prepared statements and query pipelining as limitations. Depending on the driver and app, you may need to disable or reconfigure those features.

Persistent backends may use a direct database connection when their network supports it. Do not assume that connection string is also the right one for a short-lived function. The guide also notes separate pooling or add-on considerations for IPv4-only environments. For migrations and operational tasks such as backup and restore, use the direct connection pattern described in the guide. Functions that freeze between requests can retain stale pooled sockets, so handle reconnects rather than assuming a previously opened socket will remain usable.

Supabase Data API: convenient access still needs security design

Frontend applications can use Supabase’s REST or GraphQL Data API, but browser access is not simply a shortcut around database connections. Supabase requires Row Level Security (RLS) to be enabled and policies to permit the intended access. With RLS enabled and no matching policies, requests are denied. Design and test those policies around the data each user is allowed to read or change.

Turso: verify the exact client and workload

Turso positions its SQLite-compatible architecture for edge and serverless use, including async I/O and replicas. That positioning does not establish how a particular function runtime, client, schema or write pattern will perform. Confirm current product and client support, then test the actual connection setup and workload in the environment where the app will run.

Does “edge” mean data is local everywhere?

Supabase: one primary region, optional read replicas

Each Supabase project has one primary region. Supabase advises choosing a location close to users: “Each Supabase project is deployed to one primary region. Choose the location closest to your users for the best performance.” You can add read replicas, which are synchronized asynchronously and may lag behind the primary. The current read-replica guide documents geo-routing for eligible Data API GET requests; Auth continues to be handled by the primary, and other services have their own routing limits.

Supabase says general region selection deploys to an available AWS region within a broad area based on infrastructure capacity. It also cautions: “Region selection is a data-location control, not proof of regulatory compliance.” Check the documented region and service behavior against your application’s data-location and compliance requirements.

Turso: distinguish remote replicas from embedded replicas

Turso describes replicas placed near users and embedded replicas that sync with the cloud on demand. Its product page describes an embedded replica as allowing local writes while offline and later reconciliation. That is a vendor description, not an independently verified guarantee for every product configuration. Before relying on it, determine what can be read and written offline, how synchronization and conflicts work, how much data is local, and what happens during recovery or reconnection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For either provider, locality is not a blanket promise that every request is served nearby. Map where reads occur, where writes are routed, how fresh a replica must be, and whether authentication or other services follow the same path. No latency or throughput result can be inferred from the providers’ architecture descriptions alone.

How do development and preview workflows compare?

Supabase branches

Supabase’s branching guide describes branch environments that start from the main project. Its deployment steps include health checks, applying migrations and secrets, and deploying changed Edge Functions. Preview branching for pull requests requires the Pro plan, according to the deployment documentation. Confirm plan eligibility and decide how test data will be populated before making branches part of your review workflow.

Turso branches

Turso describes copy-on-write database branches as metadata-only. That is not automatically equivalent to a Supabase branch environment: compare what data each workflow exposes, how test data is created, what merging means, and how deployments are automated. The word “branch” alone does not establish that the workflows have the same behavior or purpose.

How should you compare the cost?

Do not call one option cheaper without pricing the same workload. Supabase charges for plan subscriptions and each project’s dedicated PostgreSQL compute; compute is charged independently of usage, while plan quotas and applicable overages also affect the bill. The following examples are figures listed on Supabase’s official billing page accessed on 2026-10-03, not a like-for-like cost comparison:

Supabase plan allowance example Free Pro/Team
Edge Function invocations 500,000 2 million included; listed overage beyond that allowance
Egress 5 GB 250 GB included; listed overage beyond that allowance
Database size per project 500 MB 8 GB disk included; listed overage beyond that allowance

These are plan examples, not total prices; allowances and billing details can change. Check the current Supabase billing page before budgeting. Turso’s product page, accessed 2026-10-03, describes embedded use as free and advertises a free cloud allowance, but the available information here does not establish a normalized price against Supabase. Check Turso’s current product information for applicable terms.

Model a representative month for both providers, including storage, request and read/write volume, database count, replica geography, egress, separate environments and any project compute. Include operational effort as well as provider charges; plan quotas alone do not determine which option costs less for your app.

Make the choice against your actual workload

  1. Start with the data model. If PostgreSQL features or compatibility are mandatory, favor Supabase. If SQLite compatibility and the intended Turso product fit the schema, keep Turso in consideration.
  2. Map the runtime and connection path. Identify browser, edge-function and persistent-backend access separately. Check the connection mode, driver restrictions and security policies for each path.
  3. Define freshness and offline requirements. Specify acceptable replica lag, where writes go, what must work without a connection, and how synchronization or recovery should behave.
  4. Account for platform dependencies. Decide whether managed Auth, Storage, Realtime and preview workflows reduce work, or whether you prefer to assemble those services independently.
  5. Test and price the real case. Run representative queries and writes with realistic contention, then compare monthly costs using the same storage, traffic, regions, replicas and environments.

Choose Supabase when PostgreSQL or its integrated service surface is a hard requirement. Choose Turso when SQLite compatibility, many small tenant databases or embedded local-first behavior is central and its specific capabilities meet your consistency and operational needs. In either case, let realistic tests and a matched cost estimate—not the label “edge”—decide the final fit.
