How Path Traversal Vulnerabilities Can Expose Files on Mail Servers

Path traversal happens when mail software fails to keep an input-built file path inside its intended directory. The impact may be file reading, writing, or more, depending on the flaw.

Path traversal can expose files on a mail server when software uses outside input to build a file path but fails to keep the resolved path inside its intended directory. The consequences depend on the vulnerable feature: an issue may allow reading files or mail, modifying files, or a further compromise. It does not follow that every traversal flaw exposes mail contents.

How path traversal works

A mail application may accept a filename or path-related value from a webmail request, an IMAP command, or an email attachment. If it uses that input to locate or save a file without enforcing a directory boundary, special path elements such as .. can make the operating system resolve the path outside the intended folder. MITRE classifies this weakness as CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory.

The important check is not whether the original text appears to name a child file. Software must validate the canonical, resolved path after decoding and normalization, and confirm that the result remains within the allowed parent directory. Different flaws may expose different operations, and the service account’s filesystem permissions affect what an attacker can reach.

The cited record concerns version 4.00; consult the vendor for applicable remediation. NVD: CVE-2005-1902.
Fortinet FortiMail Crafted HTTP or HTTPS requests; the NVD record describes unauthenticated exploitation on affected versions Arbitrary file writing on the underlying system—not evidence of file reading. The 2026 NVD record shows a Fortinet-contributed CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8, Critical. Its configuration and affected-product sections present version ranges inconsistently; check Fortinet’s current advisory before determining exposure or remediation. NVD: CVE-2026-104286.
Webklex php-imap attachment saving Attachment filename handling in applications using the library Unsanitized filenames can cause traversal when attachments are saved; the advisory describes possible remote code execution for affected patterns. The GitHub advisory lists versions before 5.3.0 as affected and 5.3.0 or later as patched. This is a mail-processing library issue, not a mail-server daemon vulnerability. GitHub advisory: GHSA-47p7-xfcc-4pv9.

These records should not be treated as a like-for-like severity ranking: they involve different components, access requirements, operations, and affected versions. Historical cases also do not establish present-day exposure; verify the exact product and version against current vendor guidance.

How to reduce traversal risk in mail software

For developers handling paths or attachments

  • Decode input once into the application’s canonical representation before validating it, and avoid double decoding.
  • Prefer a strict allowlist of permitted names or identifiers over a denylist that merely removes suspicious text. Removing ../ can leave another dangerous sequence, and filtering only / may miss where it is a path separator.
  • Resolve the candidate path and verify that it remains beneath the permitted directory. Where practical, map a constrained identifier to a fixed server-side filename instead of accepting a path from a request or attachment.
  • Run the mail service with only the filesystem permissions it needs, limiting the files a path-handling failure could expose or alter.

These practices align with MITRE’s CWE-22 guidance: CWE-22.

For mail-system operators

  1. Identify the exact product, component, and installed version—including whether the vulnerable feature is webmail, an IMAP service, or an attachment-processing library.
  2. Check the vendor’s current security advisory for affected versions and apply its patch or mitigation guidance. For the 2026 FortiMail record, do not infer version boundaries from the NVD summary alone because its version information is inconsistent.
  3. Review filesystem permissions for the service account and limit access to the directories and files the service must handle.

A web application firewall or input filter may be a defense-in-depth measure, but it does not replace correcting path resolution and boundary checks in the vulnerable software.

What to establish when assessing a specific finding

Before concluding that a mail server can disclose messages, determine which component and operation the advisory actually describes. Check whether exploitation requires authentication, which versions are affected, whether the flaw reads or writes files (or permits another operation), and which files are reachable under the service account’s permissions. Use the vendor advisory for patch status and version guidance; a traversal label alone does not answer those questions.
