Turn both devices off first, follow the exact model manuals, and never connect speaker outputs directly to a subwoofer’s RCA inputs.
What a subwoofer high-level input does
A high-level input accepts the amplified speaker signal from an amplifier’s speaker terminals. The subwoofer uses that signal while the main speakers remain connected to the amplifier. This is different from an RCA line-level input, which expects a lower-voltage signal.

Check the labels and manuals for both devices before wiring. A subwoofer may have a dedicated high-level connector, RCA inputs, an LFE input, or some combination; the connector shape alone does not establish that two connections are interchangeable.
Choose the connection that matches your equipment
| Connection path | Use it when | What connects | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct high-level | The powered subwoofer has a compatible speaker-level input and the amplifier has suitable speaker outputs. | Amplifier speaker terminals to the subwoofer’s high-level input with the specified cable. | Wiring depends on the amplifier topology and subwoofer model. A Speakon lead is not an RCA cable. |
| Speaker-level adapter to RCA | The amplifier has speaker outputs, but the powered subwoofer accepts only RCA line-level input. | Amplifier speaker outputs to the adapter; adapter RCA outputs to the subwoofer. | Use an adapter specified for the amplifier’s output type. Never wire speaker outputs straight to RCA inputs. |
| Low-level RCA | A compatible preamp, line-level, or subwoofer output is available and the subwoofer accepts it. | RCA output to the subwoofer’s line-level input. | Confirm whether the source output is stereo line level or a bass-managed subwoofer output. |
| LFE or receiver subwoofer output | A surround receiver or processor and the subwoofer have compatible LFE/line inputs. | Receiver’s subwoofer output to the subwoofer’s LFE or line input. | Receiver bass management and subwoofer input controls vary by model. |
For example, Denon’s HEOS Link HS2 instructions connect the SUB WOOFER output to an input on a powered subwoofer or subwoofer amplifier. That is a line-level route, not a reason to connect speaker terminals to RCA.

Prepare before changing speaker wiring
- Find the exact amplifier and subwoofer model numbers and read their connection diagrams. Identify whether the amplifier output is conventional grounded, Class D, bridged, or differential/balanced.
- Switch off the system before disconnecting or changing wires. REL’s Serie T/i operating instructions explicitly say to switch off the system before disconnecting wires.
- Use only the subwoofer input identified for high-level or speaker-level connection, and use the cable specified for that model.
- Keep bare wire short and secure. Stray strands can touch another terminal and cause a short.
Connect a compatible high-level input
Conventional grounded amplifier: REL-specific example
For the conventional Class A/B hookup described by REL, its high-level cable’s red lead goes to the amplifier’s right positive speaker output, yellow to left positive, and black to a suitable amplifier ground output. The Speakon plug then goes into the REL subwoofer’s high-level input. REL’s Serie T/i instructions map the red and yellow leads to the right and left positive outputs and the black lead to a main speaker’s black terminal on one channel—not both.
This is a REL-specific example, not a universal color code or pinout. Follow the manual for the exact subwoofer and amplifier. REL’s walkthrough explains the distinction plainly: the high-level lead is not connected to an RCA input (REL high-level connection walkthrough).

Differential, bridged, or some Class D amplifiers
On some amplifiers, both speaker terminals are actively driven. A negative or black terminal may therefore be a live output rather than ground. Do not assume that a black speaker terminal is a safe ground reference.

REL warns that its black lead must not be attached to the black binding post on some Class D and differential amplifiers. SVS likewise cautions against connecting differential amplifier negative terminals to its adapter. Its adapter guidance describes using the amplifier’s ground terminal as the signal reference in that configuration. These directions apply to the products and setups described by those manufacturers; they are not interchangeable wiring rules. If your amp’s output topology or correct reference point is unclear, stop and get instructions for the exact models rather than experimenting.

Subwoofer has RCA inputs only
Do not connect amplifier speaker terminals directly to RCA inputs. RCA inputs expect line-level voltage, while speaker outputs carry a much stronger signal; direct wiring can damage the subwoofer amplifier. A speaker-level-to-line-level adapter is designed to accept the speaker signal and provide RCA outputs. Match its wiring instructions to the amplifier, particularly if the amp is bridged or differential. The adapter is a signal converter; ordinary speaker wire alone does not perform that conversion.
Decide between high-level, RCA, and LFE
- High-level: On applicable REL products, this takes the signal from the amplifier’s speaker terminals. REL recommends it for its products when compatible speaker outputs are available; that manufacturer preference is not a universal rule for every subwoofer or system.
- Low-level RCA: May be appropriate when speaker outputs are unavailable, such as with some active speakers, TVs, or computers, or in certain monoblock-amplifier setups. Confirm that the output and input are compatible.
- LFE/.1: Use the dedicated effects/subwoofer path in a surround system when the receiver or processor and subwoofer provide matching connections. On applicable REL models, the manufacturer says LFE can be used alongside high-level or low-level for separate stereo and surround signals; check the specific model instructions.
The practical decision turns on the amplifier outputs, subwoofer inputs, amplifier topology, and whether the system is for stereo listening, surround sound, or both. REL’s input overview describes its own recommendations among high-level, low-level, and LFE connections. Its advice should be treated as guidance for REL products rather than proof that one input method always sounds better.

Set the subwoofer after wiring
Once the system is connected safely, adjust crossover or low-pass settings and level so the subwoofer integrates with the main speakers. The right settings depend on the speakers, room, subwoofer controls, and any receiver bass management; do not assume all products treat high-level and LFE inputs the same way. REL’s Serie T/i manual, for example, says its high-level crossover is engaged while its LFE path bypasses the normal crossover.

SVS suggests looking up the speakers’ low-frequency extension as a starting point for the subwoofer low-pass setting, matching gain, then listening and fine-tuning for smooth integration. Its suggested crossover slopes differ for sealed and ported speaker designs, so treat those figures as SVS setup guidance rather than universal settings. For a broader description of how the input paths differ, see REL’s overview of RCA, XLR, and high-level connections.
