Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo change a TV’s name, first identify which name you mean: the TV’s device identity, the label for an HDMI-connected device, or the name of a separate streaming player in an account or app. The settings are different, and changing one name does not necessarily change how the device appears in every app, casting list, or network view.
Choose the name you want to change
- TV device name: The identity used by a TV feature such as Wi-Fi Direct. The menu depends on the TV platform and software version.
- Input label: The name displayed for an HDMI-connected device in the TV’s input list. This changes the label on the TV, not necessarily the external device’s own identity.
- Streaming-device name: The name of a separate streaming player or a Roku TV in its account or mobile app. This is managed separately from the TV’s input labels.
Change the device name on a Samsung TV
Samsung menu paths vary by model generation. Follow the route for your TV’s year, then look for Device Name or Edit Name. Samsung notes that menus and screenshots can differ by model and software version.

- 2016 models: Settings > Network > Device Name.
- 2014–2015 models: Menu > Network > Device Name.
If the path does not match your menus, check the manual or support information for the exact model rather than assuming another generation’s route applies.
Change the device name on a Sony Android TV or Google TV
Sony describes this setting as the device name shown on the TV’s Wi-Fi Direct settings screen, where it can help distinguish multiple Sony TVs linked to a mobile device or computer. It does not establish that the name changes in every third-party app.

Rename a Roku player or Roku TV
Roku devices can be named during setup and renamed later. Use either the Roku account website or the mobile app.
Using a Roku account
- On a phone or computer, sign in at my.roku.com.
- Open My linked devices and find the device.
- Select Rename, enter the new name, and confirm.
Using the Roku mobile app
- Connect the phone to the same wireless network as the Roku device.
- In the app, open Settings > Edit Name.
- Enter the new name and save it.
Roku says naming helps distinguish devices in the account, mobile app, or during screen mirroring when a household has multiple Roku devices.

If the name does not change where you expected
- Confirm whether you changed the TV’s device identity, an input label, or a streaming-device account name; these are separate fields.
- Check the location where that particular name is intended to appear. For example, Sony describes its device-name setting in connection with Wi-Fi Direct, while LG’s procedure affects the Inputs list.
- Use the menu route for the TV’s model generation or Android version. Menus can vary, and an otherwise similar model may use a different route.
- For an Apple TV or for changing an LG TV’s own device name, consult the official instructions or manual for the exact model. The steps above do not establish those procedures.
Menu and account interfaces can change over time; this guidance reflects official support instructions available as of October 2026.
