The best strong coffee maker is one that lets you control how much coffee you use and, if desired, adjust brewing settings—not simply one that runs hotter. For a documented Strong preset and detailed customization, the Breville Precision Brewer is a clear feature-based option. For other priorities, use the Specialty Coffee Association’s current Certified Home Brewers list as a starting shortlist, then compare carafe style, capacity, controls, and workflow.
What makes coffee taste stronger?
In drip coffee, perceived strength depends in part on the amount of coffee grounds relative to water, as well as brewing choices and the beans themselves. A brewer’s Strong setting can adjust its brewing parameters, but adding more grounds is a direct way to make a repeatable recipe more concentrated. A hotter machine is not automatically stronger or better: temperature is a brewing parameter, not a synonym for beverage intensity.

Start by measuring both coffee and water consistently. A kitchen scale makes it easier to repeat a dose and tell whether a setting change actually made the cup stronger. Use the filter shape and brewing instructions specified for your machine.

There is no universal winner without knowing whether you want a full carafe or a single serving, a glass or thermal carafe, simple presets or fine adjustment, and how much counter space you can spare. These options illustrate different ways to narrow the choice; the feature descriptions are from manufacturers or the SCA, not independent comparative testing.

| Brewer or shortlist | Why consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Breville Precision Brewer | Breville documents a Strong mode as well as Gold, MyBrew, and other modes. Its product page describes adjustment of bloom time, brew temperature, and flow rate. | Check the exact model and local availability. Strong is a setting to adjust taste, not evidence that the brewer will outperform every alternative. |
| Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select | The SCA listing gives a 40 oz capacity. | Confirm that the exact model and regional version remain on the current SCA roster and suit your desired batch size. |
| Technivorm Moccamaster Cup-One | The SCA listing gives a 10 oz serving capacity, making it relevant if you prefer a single cup over a carafe. | Check the current listing and whether a single-serving workflow fits your routine. |
| Bonavita 8-Cup brewers | Several Bonavita brewers appear on the SCA list. Bonavita describes its Connoisseur as one-touch and its Enthusiast as adding a removable water tank and dedicated Bloom button. | Verify the exact variant; manufacturer descriptions and features can differ by model. |
| Breville The Luxe Brewer or OXO Brew 8-Cup | Both are among the models listed by the SCA. The SCA listing gives the OXO Brew 8-Cup a capacity of eight cups. | Use the live listing for exact model details and current certification status. |
| Current SCA Certified Home Brewers list | A useful broader shortlist includes multiple models from Technivorm Moccamaster, Bonavita, Breville, OXO, and other manufacturers. | Certification is a brewing-performance screen, not a promise that every drinker will prefer a model’s flavor intensity. Check the exact model and regional listing. |
What features should you look for in a coffee maker?
Capacity and serving style
Choose a carafe brewer if you routinely make several cups at once; consider a single-serve machine if you usually brew one. The SCA currently lists the KBGV Select at 40 oz and the Cup-One at 10 oz per serving. Those are listed capacities, not a guarantee that every version sold in every market is identical.
Carafe and day-to-day workflow
Decide whether you want a glass or thermal carafe, how much cleanup you will tolerate, and whether filling the reservoir is convenient. For a simpler workflow, Bonavita describes the Connoisseur as one-touch. Its Enthusiast adds a removable water tank and dedicated Bloom button, according to the manufacturer. Check the exact variant before buying.

- 2 BREW STYLES: Classic or Rich, each brew is flavorful and never bitter with custom brew strengths.
- 12-CUP GLASS CARAFE: Brew small or large batches of coffee – perfect for day to day or entertaining.
- HOTTER BREWING TECHNOLOGY: Delivers even saturation and temperature control for ultra-flavorful coffee.
- SMALL BATCH FUNCTION: Ensure your coffee is never diluted when brewing a small batch (1-4 cups).
- WAKE UP TO HOT COFFEE: 24-hour programmable delay brew allows you to prepare your brew up to a day in advance.
Strength and customization controls
A labeled Strong mode is useful when you want a quick adjustment. More detailed settings can help you tune a brew, but only if you plan to use them. Breville describes the Precision Brewer’s adjustable bloom time, temperature, and flow rate; its manual documents Strong, Gold, MyBrew, and other modes.

How do you brew a stronger cup with a drip machine?
- Measure your usual recipe. Weigh the coffee and water so you have a consistent starting point rather than relying on an imprecise scoop.
- Increase the coffee dose gradually. Breville’s Precision Brewer manual recommends increasing the amount of ground coffee for a strong cup. That is manufacturer guidance for its brewer, not a universal required ratio.
- Use a Strong preset if your machine has one. On the Precision Brewer, the manual says Strong adjusts settings for a stronger-tasting cup. Follow the instructions for your exact model.
- Change one variable at a time. Keep the water amount and other settings steady while adjusting the dose or a preset. That makes it easier to identify which change gives you the taste you want.
For context, Breville’s undated Precision Brewer manual specifies 55 g of coffee per 1.0 L of water for its SCA-certified Gold mode with the cone basket and specified water volumes. This is a mode- and setup-specific recipe, not a universal ratio for every brewer. Bonavita describes 195–205°F as the SCA brewing window; that temperature range is a technical brewing parameter, not a measure of beverage strength.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose between presets and manual control?
- Choose a dedicated Strong mode if you want an easy, labeled adjustment and are content to follow the brewer’s recipe guidance.
- Choose broader customization if you want to experiment with settings such as bloom time, temperature, and flow rate.
- Choose a simpler machine if reliable one-touch operation matters more than adjusting multiple parameters.
- Use the SCA roster to screen for certified models, then make the final choice based on capacity, carafe, controls, and cleaning routine.
