Yes. Roku Ultra can play personal movie files from a USB drive using Roku Media Player, without streaming those files over the internet. Whether a movie appears and plays depends on its codec and container, the drive being recognized, and the file not being DRM-protected. The format details below apply specifically to the 2024 Roku Ultra, model 4850R.
How to play a movie from USB on Roku Ultra
-
Connect the USB flash drive or hard drive to the Roku Ultra’s USB port.

If the movie is missing or will not play, check the model’s supported media formats, then check the drive’s file system and power requirements.
Roku Media Player may hide files it determines the device cannot play, so a movie that does not appear in the browser may be incompatible rather than missing from the drive. Roku’s Media Player guidance also says DRM-protected content is not supported.

Which movie formats the 2024 Roku Ultra supports
For the Roku Ultra (2024, model 4850R), Roku lists these USB video codec and container combinations:
| Video codec | Containers listed by Roku |
|---|---|
| H.264/AVC | MKV, MP4, MOV |
| H.265/HEVC | MKV, MP4, MOV |
| VP9.2 | MKV |
| AV1 | MP4, MKV |
These are codec-and-container combinations, not a guarantee that every file with a listed extension will play. A filename ending in .mp4, for example, does not tell you which video codec it contains. Audio tracks and the connected TV or A/V receiver can also affect whether sound plays correctly. Roku notes that supported formats vary by device and firmware; check the Roku Ultra product specifications for the model-specific list.

Check the USB drive’s format and power
Roku’s published guidance conflicts on exFAT. Its Roku Media Player article lists FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, exFAT, and HFS+. But Roku’s separate USB drive troubleshooting page lists FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, and HFS+, and says exFAT is unsupported. Because the official pages disagree, do not assume an exFAT drive will work; check current guidance for your Roku model before changing the drive’s format. Reformatting can erase everything stored on it.
Power can also prevent a drive from appearing. Roku says some USB drives need more power than the player can provide. If your hard drive has an external power adapter, connect it. If a drive without its own adapter needs more power, Roku recommends a powered USB hub; a hub is not a general requirement for every drive.

Troubleshoot a missing drive, movie, or soundtrack
The USB drive does not appear

Connect the drive’s external power supply if it has one. Insufficient power is one cause Roku identifies for detection problems.
-
If you are using a non-powered hub, connect the drive directly to the Roku or try a powered hub. Roku also suggests reducing the number of devices connected to a hub. Follow the hub’s instructions for connection order; if detection still fails, try Roku’s suggested powered-hub sequence on its troubleshooting page.
The movie is not listed
Roku Media Player does not display unsupported files. Confirm that the file’s actual codec and container match the 4850R’s supported combinations, and make sure the content is not DRM-protected. The extension alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
The video plays but the sound does not
Audio compatibility can depend on the connected TV or A/V receiver as well as the media file. Check Roku’s help information for your device and media type if the picture appears but the soundtrack does not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUSB playback or a local-network media server?
Direct USB playback is the simpler option when you want to keep movies on a removable drive and the files already match the Roku’s supported formats. A local-network media server is an alternative if you keep a shared library on another device or need server-side conversion: Roku Media Player can access a media server on your local network, and Roku says some DLNA servers—including Plex, Serviio, Windows Media Player, and some Synology devices—may transcode video into a format the Roku supports. Transcoding support depends on the server and file; it is not a guarantee that every movie will work.
If a movie is incompatible over USB, you can convert it to a combination listed for your Roku model or use a network server that can transcode it. Check the converted file’s codec and container against the device specifications rather than relying only on its extension.
