Short answer: Apple Pay and Google Pay are the safest default choices for most shoppers because the store normally receives a device-specific payment token rather than your real card number, and the payment requires device authentication. Apple Pay has the clearest privacy promise in the documentation reviewed. Google Pay offers comparable tokenization, but fraud-liability and 3D Secure treatment changes with the token path. Stripe Link is secure and protects card data from the merchant’s server, yet its cross-merchant convenience means Stripe retains more payment and contact information and may share it across businesses in the same Stripe organization after you consent.
There is no official, wallet-wide fraud-rate study proving one service always wins. The useful comparison is how each wallet tokenizes the card, authenticates a payment, handles a lost device, stores or shares data, and assigns liability for the exact transaction.

What “safest” means for a checkout wallet
Security is not a single score. A wallet can hide your card number from a merchant while still having a broad data-retention policy, or offer strong authentication while the transaction type receives no liability shift. Evaluate four separate controls:
- Credential exposure: Does the merchant receive the funding card number (PAN), or a device or network token?
- Payment authorization: Must you unlock the device, use Face ID or Touch ID, enter a passcode, or enter a one-time code?
- Provider data practices: What payment, identity and contact details are stored, and where can they be reused?
- Dispute and fraud treatment: Does the token path support liability shift or 3D Secure for that transaction?
All three options can be safer than typing a card number into a checkout form. They are not interchangeable, however, because the token and risk rules can change between a mobile app, a browser, and an embedded payment button.

Apple Pay: strongest privacy-first default
How Apple Pay protects the card number
Apple Pay replaces the underlying card number with a device-specific number. The DPAN can differ from the number used on another Apple device, so a merchant does not receive the funding PAN simply because you tapped or selected Apple Pay. Apple’s documentation says the transactions use that device-specific number instead of the actual card number.
Credentials are stored in a Secure Element isolated from the main processor, according to Stripe’s Apple Pay security documentation. The payment is authorized with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode. This separation means a normal app process cannot simply read the payment credential and send it elsewhere.
What Apple says about transaction privacy
Apple states that it does not sell transaction data for third-party marketing or advertising. It also says the actual card number is encrypted on Apple devices and in iCloud Keychain in a way that Apple cannot see. Those are provider privacy commitments, not a promise that a merchant receives no information at all: the merchant still needs the order, delivery and transaction details required to fulfill a purchase.
What happens when an iPhone or Apple Watch is lost
Use Find My to place the device in Lost Mode. Apple describes Lost Mode as a way to instantly suspend Apple Pay cards on that device. Because the wallet credential is device-specific, suspending the lost device does not require replacing the physical card in every case. Remove the device from your Apple Account and contact the card issuer if you see an unrecognized transaction.

- You can protect the device with a strong passcode and biometric authentication.
Google Pay: tokenization with token-dependent liability
Security controls on Android
Google’s security documentation says Google Pay sends a device token, the DPAN, rather than the funding PAN for supported device-wallet transactions. It describes secure in-memory storage for limited-use keys, device-unlock authorization as the cardholder-verification method, Play Integrity checks, Android operating-system isolation and app-permission controls. Together, these controls reduce the value of payment data exposed to a merchant or a compromised application.
Why the Google Pay button is not one security path
Stripe’s liability guidance separates Google Pay transactions into three cases:
- Card added to the Google Pay app on a mobile device: It is saved as a DPAN and supports liability shift by default.
- Card saved to Chrome or a Google first-party property: It uses an FPAN and supports liability shift when 3D Secure is performed.
- Google Pay e-commerce token used by a site or app: The current Stripe guidance says it supports neither liability shift nor 3D Secure.
Therefore, “Google Pay is tokenized” does not answer every fraud-dispute question. The checkout integration, device, browser and token type determine which protections apply. If liability shift matters for a high-value purchase, ask the merchant or issuer how that particular integration is processed rather than relying on the button label.

Lost Android phone or tablet
Lock or erase the device through Google’s device-finding service, remove the payment profile from the lost device when that option is available, and notify your card issuer about suspicious activity. Change the device-unlock credential if you believe it was exposed. A strong screen lock is essential because device unlock is the normal cardholder-verification method for Google Pay.

When Google Pay is the sensible choice
- You use Android and the merchant presents a genuine Google Pay checkout.
- You want a DPAN and device authorization instead of entering the card number.
- You can verify whether the payment is a mobile DPAN, a browser FPAN with 3D Secure, or an e-commerce token.
- Your phone uses current Android security updates and an intact screen lock.
Stripe Link: secure tokenization with a broader reuse model
What Link protects
Stripe’s client-side tokenization is designed so sensitive card data does not touch the merchant’s server. That architecture supports PCI-compliant integrations by keeping the raw card details within Stripe’s payment components rather than a store’s own systems. Link then lets you reuse a saved payment method at participating merchants without typing it again.
What Link stores
Stripe says Link may remember your name, email address, phone number, billing and shipping addresses, and payment-method details. Authentication uses a one-time passcode. Stripe also documents cookies and similar technologies in Stripe.js for authentication, analytics and fraud prevention.
The important privacy distinction is the reuse scope. After you consent, Stripe may share saved payment methods and contact information across businesses in the same Stripe organization. Each business sees only its own transaction history, but the Stripe-level profile can make checkout faster at multiple stores. That is convenient, yet it means more payment and identity data is retained by one provider than in a one-off wallet transaction.

Link’s tokenization and merchant-server design can reduce exposure of the debit-card number, so using a debit card is not inherently unsafe. The trade-off is the same as with any debit purchase: fraudulent withdrawals can affect available funds immediately, and dispute procedures depend on your bank and card network. Enable transaction alerts, use a debit-card account with a spending buffer rather than your primary cash reserve when practical, and review the merchant name before confirming.

When Link is the sensible choice
- You regularly shop with participating Stripe merchants and the speed of a stored payment method is worth the broader Stripe profile.
- You prefer Stripe to handle card data instead of a small merchant’s own server.
- You understand that one-time-passcode access and saved contact information are part of the convenience.
- You are comfortable reviewing or deleting saved methods from your Link account when you stop using the service.
Which wallet hides the card number best?
Apple Pay and Google Pay have the clearest device-token model: the merchant receives a DPAN tied to a particular device rather than the funding PAN. Removing the card from that device invalidates that device-specific number. This limits the usefulness of payment data stolen from one checkout.
Link’s client-side tokenization keeps raw card data off the merchant server, which is a meaningful security benefit. Its model is centered on Stripe storing and reusing the payment method, not on presenting the same device-bound credential at every merchant. If your priority is that stores never receive the underlying number and that a token is tied to your handset, choose Apple Pay or Google Pay when available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which wallet gives the best fraud protection?
There is no honest universal winner. Apple Pay’s reviewed material emphasizes device authentication, device-specific numbers and Lost Mode, but does not publish a single fraud-liability rule covering every issuer and network. Google Pay has the most explicit token-path distinction: a mobile DPAN supports liability shift by default, a browser FPAN needs 3D Secure, and the current e-commerce-token path has neither liability shift nor 3D Secure under Stripe’s guidance. Link is tokenized, but the supplied documentation does not establish one liability-shift outcome for every Link transaction.

Liability shift is not the same as reimbursement in every circumstance. It generally changes which party bears certain unauthorized-transaction losses when the network’s conditions are met. Your issuer’s zero-liability policy, the merchant’s fraud controls, the checkout integration and the evidence in a dispute still matter.

How to choose in common situations
You are buying from an unfamiliar store
Use Apple Pay or Google Pay if the domain is correct and the wallet is offered in the merchant’s own checkout. A device token limits the value of a card-number breach. Do not let a wallet distract you from checking the domain, return policy and shipping details.
You are on Android and the purchase is high value
Prefer the mobile Google Pay path when practical, because Stripe documents liability shift by default for a card saved in the Google Pay app as a DPAN. If the site is using a browser or an app’s e-commerce token, determine whether 3D Secure is performed and whether liability shift applies before assuming the same protection.
You are on Apple hardware and privacy is the priority
Choose Apple Pay. Its device-specific number, Secure Element, biometric or passcode authorization, Lost Mode and explicit statement about not selling transaction data for third-party marketing provide the clearest privacy-first package in the reviewed documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou shop repeatedly across many independent stores
Link may save the most time. Decide whether that convenience justifies Stripe retaining your contact and payment details and, after consent, making them available across businesses in the same Stripe organization. If not, use a device wallet for each checkout instead.
You only have a debit card
Any of the three can reduce the need to expose the card number directly to a merchant. Apple Pay or Google Pay add a device token and local authorization; Link keeps the card data within Stripe’s payment components. Turn on bank alerts and report unauthorized debit transactions immediately, regardless of wallet.
What to do before and after paying
Before payment
- Verify the exact merchant domain, including the spelling of the company name and the checkout address.
- Update the phone, tablet or computer operating system and the wallet application.
- Use a long device passcode; enable Face ID, Touch ID or Android device-unlock protection.
- Check the amount, currency, shipping address and merchant descriptor on the confirmation screen.
- For Google Pay, identify whether the checkout is using a mobile DPAN, a browser FPAN or an e-commerce token if the purchase is significant.
After payment
- Keep the receipt, order number and wallet confirmation until the order is complete.
- Enable push, email or SMS alerts from your card issuer and investigate unfamiliar authorizations.
- If the device is lost, activate Lost Mode or remote lock and remove wallet credentials from it.
- Contact the issuer through the number on the card or its official app for an unrecognized charge; do not use a phone number in a suspicious message.
- Review saved payment methods and contact details in Link and delete entries you no longer want stored.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Assuming every Google Pay button has identical liability: Confirm the token path and whether 3D Secure ran.
- Leaving a phone protected only by a weak pattern or no lock: Replace it with a strong passcode and keep biometric unlock enabled.
- Treating tokenization as anonymity: The merchant still receives order, delivery and transaction information needed to fulfill the purchase.
- Forgetting a lost device: Remote-lock or erase it and suspend wallet cards immediately; then notify the issuer if anything looks wrong.
- Using a Link sandbox account with real information: Stripe’s testing documentation warns that sandbox Link accounts should not contain real user data.
- Saving a card everywhere without reviewing access: Periodically remove unused wallet devices, browser profiles and Link payment methods.
Bottom line
For most people, select Apple Pay or Google Pay rather than typing a card number. Pick Apple Pay when privacy language and device-bound credentials matter most. Pick Google Pay on Android, but treat the token type and 3D Secure status as part of the security decision. Pick Stripe Link when cross-merchant speed is more valuable to you than minimizing the payment and contact data retained by Stripe. Whichever wallet you use, the practical safeguards are the same: a strong device lock, current software, a verified merchant domain, issuer alerts and prompt action after a lost phone or suspicious charge.
