Use Stripe Customer Portal when its configurable billing and subscription tasks cover what your customers need and a Stripe-hosted interface fits your product. Build your own page when the required workflow or experience goes beyond those options—but plan and estimate the application work in your own stack.
What Stripe Customer Portal provides
Stripe describes the Billing customer portal as “a Stripe-hosted UI for subscription and billing management.” You configure which supported actions customers can take, then create a portal session for an existing Stripe customer when they want to manage billing. Stripe says a session expires if the customer does not visit it, so create one when the customer is ready to enter the portal. Stripe’s API reference explains the portal and session behavior; the session endpoint reference documents session creation.

Actions you can configure
Depending on the configuration, customers can update customer details and payment methods, view invoice history, cancel subscriptions, or change subscriptions. Configuration settings also determine which subscription updates are available, when cancellation takes effect, and how proration is handled. Review Stripe’s portal configuration reference and verify the behavior against the API version and Dashboard settings used by your account.

| Decision point | Stripe Customer Portal | Your own management page |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow coverage | Offers the billing and subscription actions supported by your portal configuration. | Can be designed around workflows specific to your product, using Stripe’s subscription APIs. |
| Customer experience | A hosted Stripe interface with configurable behavior. | Your team controls the application experience and how it fits into your product. That control also means you must implement the page. |
| Integration starting point | Create a portal session for the existing Stripe customer who wants to manage billing. | Design the application around Stripe’s subscription APIs, which provide software interfaces for creating and managing subscriptions. |
| Billing behavior | Choose supported updates, cancellation timing, and proration settings in the configuration. | Design how the page presents and initiates the billing changes your application supports; confirm the relevant API behavior for your integration. |
Stripe’s subscription API reference describes subscription creation, payment behavior, and schedules for more complex billing arrangements. It establishes an API surface, not a complete implementation plan for a custom customer-management application.

How to choose
- List the actions customers need. Include account-detail and payment-method changes, invoice history, cancellation, and plan changes where relevant.
- Match those actions to the portal configuration. Decide which updates customers may make, whether cancellation is immediate or at the end of the billing period, and how proration should work.
- Identify any workflow the configuration does not cover. If customers need a product-specific step or experience beyond the available options, assess a custom page against the subscription APIs.
- Estimate the custom work in your own stack. Authentication, authorization, error handling, and keeping subscription state in sync with your application are design areas to investigate. Stripe’s reviewed API references do not enumerate every production responsibility or provide a complete application-effort estimate.
- Choose where customers enter billing management. Connect the destination to the purchase and account experience you already provide.
Choose a customer entry point
Customers can reach subscription management from an account page, or a purchase flow can direct existing subscribers to the right destination. Stripe documents options for sending existing Checkout subscribers to the portal or to the merchant’s website in its guide to limiting customers to one subscription. Its embeddable pricing table documentation also covers directing existing subscribers to the portal or the merchant’s website.
These routes make the destination part of the wider account experience: use the portal if it covers the required tasks, or your own site if customers need a custom management workflow.

What the available documentation does—and does not—establish
Stripe’s references establish portal configuration and session capabilities, along with subscription APIs for building against. They do not provide a general comparison of build cost, implementation hours, retention, or customer satisfaction for the two approaches. Those outcomes depend on your product and implementation; do not assume that either option is cheaper or improves retention without project-specific evidence.
