Connect the storage device using a data-capable connection, then browse and copy files with a file manager such as Files by Google. Support depends on the exact phone, connector, drive format and power needs; the plug fitting the phone is not proof that it will work.
What USB OTG does
USB host mode allows the phone to control an attached peripheral, such as a storage device. “OTG” is the common term for using the phone this way. It is different from USB accessory mode, in which the accessory acts as the host and supplies bus power. Android’s Android 16 Compatibility Definition Document says devices with a USB port SHOULD support host mode. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee for every handset.

A typical setup is phone → USB-C or Micro-USB OTG adapter, if needed → USB flash drive or photo stick. A direct-plug photo stick combines the connector and storage, while a USB card reader can connect a camera memory card. In every case, the phone still needs host-mode support and a working data connection.
How to connect a USB drive and copy photos
Google says Files by Google can access USB storage on Android 7.0 and later. The following steps describe manual file management, not automatic photo backup.
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- Check the connection. Confirm that the exact phone model supports USB host/OTG operation. Match the phone and drive connectors; if you need an adapter, it must support data and host use. A charging-only adapter will not provide file access.
- Connect the storage device. Open Files by Google. Google’s USB storage instructions say a “USB available” notice should appear. Tap it, then tap Allow if Android asks for permission.
- Open the drive. In Files, find the device under “Storage devices,” then browse to the folder containing your photos or the folder where you want to place files.
- Copy or move files. Select the files, choose Copy to or Move to, pick a destination and confirm. To keep a backup, copy rather than move; open a few copied files to check them before deleting originals.
- Finish before disconnecting. Complete file operations before unplugging the drive. A phone-connected USB drive should be treated as portable storage, not internal storage.
Will a particular phone and drive work together?
There is no universal Android compatibility promise for every drive. Check these parts of the connection for the exact handset and storage device:
- Phone capability: Look for USB host or OTG support in the phone maker’s documentation for your model and software build. The Android 16 specification’s SHOULD language does not certify each retail phone.
- Connector and adapter: Match USB-C or Micro-USB on the phone to USB-A or USB-C on the drive. An adapter must carry data and support host use; the connector shape alone proves neither.
- File system: Google’s USB-storage instructions explain how to connect and manage files but do not provide a universal Android file-system or capacity compatibility matrix. Check the phone maker’s guidance rather than assuming every FAT32 or exFAT drive will work. Do not reformat as a first troubleshooting step: formatting erases data, so back up and verify the files elsewhere before changing a drive’s format.
- Power: A small flash drive and a mechanical external drive can have different power requirements. Android 16 strongly recommends Power Delivery for data and power-role swapping on USB-C devices that support host mode, but this is not a universal output-power specification or a promise that a phone can run a particular drive. Check the drive maker’s power requirements; a correctly specified externally powered arrangement may help if the drive does not start, provided its data path is compatible.
Why is my USB drive not showing on my phone?

- 2 in 1: USB C + USB 3.0, 32GB usb c flash drive has dual ports, usb 3.0 port is applied to all devices which have usb 3.0 interface and usb c port is widely used in all Android smartphones with OTG function
- High Speed USB 3.0: Read speed up to 90 MB/s, Write speed up to 30 MB/s, the speed of USB 3.0 interface is faster than USB 2.0, save time to wait, increases work productivity. Note: Speed will be limited if you use the USB key in the USB 2.0 interface
- Large Compatibility: The USB 3.0 Connector is compatible with USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 backward USB 1.1 devices, such as Laptop, Desktop, Car Audio, Tablet, TV, Speakers, Projector. USB-C port is compatible with all Android Smartphones
- Expand Storage: Good performance in storing, transferring and sharing digital data with families, friends, colleagues, customers. It can expand the capacity of smartphone, you can watch movies or share pictures when you go on vacation with your family
- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
- Reconnect and check Files. Google recommends removing and reconnecting the USB storage if its notification does not open. Then check Files > Browse and look under Storage devices.
- Verify host support and the adapter. Check the phone maker’s documentation for the exact model. If possible, try a known-good data-capable adapter or drive; a connector that fits may still lack a working data path.
- Check format guidance. The official Files instructions do not establish a universal format matrix. Consult the phone maker’s guidance for the handset and drive rather than reformatting without a verified backup.
- Check power needs. If the phone does not recognize or start a drive, compare its power requirements with the connection you are using. A drive with its own suitable power arrangement may be necessary.
- Consult device documentation. A drive that fails to mount on one phone is not, by that fact alone, proven defective. Check the phone and drive makers’ troubleshooting guidance.
Keep OTG separate from transferring files to a computer
With OTG, the phone hosts the attached storage device. Transferring files from a phone to a computer is a different arrangement: Google’s computer-transfer instructions describe unlocking the phone, connecting it to the computer and choosing “File Transfer.” That MTP workflow does not make the computer’s drive a phone-hosted OTG device.

Android’s adoptable storage guidance warns against adopting a USB drive connected to a phone as internal storage: accidental disconnection can risk data loss or corruption. For photo transfers, keep the drive portable and complete file activity before unplugging it.
