No. A checkmark does not prove that the account’s owner still controls it or authorized a particular post. If an X account is known or suspected to be compromised, treat its posts and requests as untrusted until the owner confirms them through a separate channel you already trust. Verify consequential claims independently before sharing them or acting on them.
What an X checkmark tells you—and what it does not
X says a blue checkmark means an account has an active X Premium subscription and meets the platform’s eligibility requirements. It does not mean X verified the account holder’s identity, and it is not an endorsement of the account’s views. The badge describes account status; it cannot establish who currently has access or whether a specific post came from the owner. See X’s explanation of the blue checkmark.

The blue checkmark’s meaning has changed. X began winding down its legacy verification program on April 1, 2023. Under the former criteria, the badge signaled that an account of public interest was authentic, notable, and active. Those criteria should not be confused with the current blue badge’s subscription and eligibility meaning. X’s verification guidance describes the legacy program.

X also uses gold checkmarks for official organization accounts through Premium Business and grey checkmarks for government or multilateral organizations and officials. These indicate account categories, not whether the owner authorized a particular message. Details are on X’s checkmark information page.

How to judge a post when an account may be compromised
Do not rely on the profile badge, post history, or the account’s apparent tone as proof of authenticity. Contact the purported owner using a phone number, email address, or other channel you already trusted before the suspicious activity. Do not use contact details newly posted by the potentially compromised account as your only confirmation.
- Check factual claims against independent, reliable sources before sharing them.
- Treat requests for money, passwords, login codes, or urgent action as especially suspicious while account control is uncertain.
- Avoid links or files in unexpected messages until the owner confirms them independently.
Signs an X account may be compromised
X lists several possible indicators. They warrant caution and account-security steps, but do not by themselves prove who accessed the account. X notes that a third-party app bug can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.

What to do if your X account is compromised
If you can still sign in
- Change the X password immediately. Use a strong, unique password that you do not use on another site.
- Secure the email account associated with X; an attacker who controls that inbox may be able to interfere with account recovery.
- Review connected third-party apps and revoke access for any you do not recognize or no longer use.
- If trusted third-party apps use your X password, update that password in those apps too.
- After regaining control, remove posts you did not authorize and review the account for other unwanted changes.
If you cannot sign in
Try X’s password reset process. If you still cannot regain access, X directs users to submit a support request using the email associated with the account and include the username and the date they last had access. Follow the current instructions on X’s compromised-account help page.

Reduce the risk of another takeover
X identifies several possible routes to compromise: sharing credentials with malicious third-party apps or websites, weak or reused passwords, password-stealing malware, and compromised networks. Its guidance recommends a strong unique password, two-factor authentication, caution with suspicious links, and keeping software current. X also mentions security keys as an authentication safeguard; it does not endorse a particular brand or model. Check that any security key you consider is compatible with your devices and current account settings. See X’s account security tips.
