The term describes a capability, not one standardized device type: some streamers have a DAC built in, while others send digital audio to a separate DAC. It does not automatically mean the device can stream DSD from a subscription service.
What “streaming DSD device” means
DSD, or Direct Stream Digital, is a digital audio format based on pulse-density modulation. A streaming DSD device reads DSD files from a network source, such as a computer or network-attached storage (NAS), then routes the audio to a DAC for conversion to analog sound.

The phrase can refer to different setups. A network player may contain its own DAC and connect directly to an amplifier or powered speakers. Another streamer may provide only a digital output and rely on an external DAC. A computer-based setup can also play network-stored files using compatible playback software and a USB DAC.

In this context, “streaming” often means playing a file across a home network. It does not, by itself, establish that a device supports DSD from an internet music service. Check the product documentation for the precise source and connection supported.

How DSD playback works
To hear a DSD file, the complete playback chain must support the chosen route: the source and player must read the file, the connection must carry the signal in a supported mode, and a DAC must convert it to analog. Playback software can be part of that chain when a computer is the player.
DSF and DFF files
DSF and DFF (also called DSDIFF) are common DSD file formats. NativeDSD notes that DSF supports embedded tags, while DFF does not. Confirm that the player or software supports the format of the files you have.

Native DSD, DoP, and PCM conversion
Native DSD sends DSD data to compatible hardware as DSD. DSD over PCM (DoP) packages DSD data inside a PCM-framed stream so compatible equipment can recognize and extract it; the player and DAC must both support the route, and the signal must remain bit-perfect. Software may need to reduce the DSD rate to one the DAC accepts over DoP.

If a DAC does not accept native DSD, playback may still be possible when software converts DSD to PCM. That is a different signal path from native DSD or DoP, so check the software settings and DAC capabilities rather than relying only on a general “DSD compatible” label.

What to check before choosing a device
- Source and input: Confirm whether the device can play from a NAS or computer over a network, or whether DSD support applies only to a direct USB connection or another input.
- Supported rate: Look up the maximum DSD rate for the specific input or network playback mode. A maximum listed for one input does not establish the same support on another.
- File formats: Check for DSF and/or DFF support, according to your library.
- Software and control: Determine whether the device plays files itself or depends on a computer, playback application, driver, mobile app, or other player.
- DAC and output: Find out whether a DAC is built in or required separately, and whether the device sends DSD natively, uses DoP, or converts it to PCM.
For example, TEAC documents DSD128 network streaming from a NAS or PC on the NT-505-X. Denon lists DSD up to 11.2 MHz for the SACD 30n’s USB-DAC input. These are specifications for different models and signal paths, not interchangeable guarantees of support across every input or service. Consult the current specification sheet for the exact model and connection you intend to use.

Match the file source, player or software, connection, supported DSD rate, and DAC as one end-to-end chain. “Streaming DSD” alone does not tell you which files, inputs, or rates a device supports—or whether it includes a DAC.
