Prepare a separate screen-share layout, label each guest clearly, and preview the full frame with the expected number of participants so graphics do not cover faces or shared content.
Choose a layout for the segment
The best layout depends on what viewers need to follow at that moment: the whole conversation, one speaker, or material being presented. StreamYard documents group, split, spotlight, screen, news, and picture-in-picture layouts, plus custom layouts with camera and media slots. Its help article describes the Group Layout as “Ideal for showcasing multiple participants.”

Roundtable or panel: group grid
Give each guest a similarly sized camera area and keep name labels in a consistent position. A dynamic camera grid can adapt to participant count and aspect ratio. Preview it with the actual panel size: a composition that looks balanced with three people may feel cramped with more.
Two-person interview: even split
A cropped 50/50 split gives host and guest comparable space. Use the same framing and label treatment on both sides so neither person appears to be a secondary guest by accident.

One person leads: speaker spotlight
Use a spotlight layout when a host or guest is making the main point. Keeping other participants visible in smaller views can preserve conversational context if the selected studio composition supports it; check the current layout rather than assuming how it will arrange the other cameras.
Slides or other shared material: presenter plus content
For a screen share, choose a screen, news, or picture-in-picture composition. Keep the presenter visible when their reactions or explanation add context, but prioritize legibility of the shared material. Custom layouts can include a media slot for shared content.

Build a readable guest identity system
Use each guest’s display name as the primary identifier. Add a short role, descriptor, or social handle only when it helps viewers distinguish the participants; in a crowded grid, names alone are often easier to read. StreamYard documents display names and optional headlines, along with text-size controls.

- Keep labels short enough to read at the size viewers are likely to watch.
- Maintain contrast against both light and dark parts of the camera image; a simple background behind the text can help.
- Keep logos and decorative elements away from faces, captions, and essential screen content.
StreamYard’s May 14, 2026 product update says static overlays can be resized and repositioned in the studio, and marks that feature as available on paid plans. Confirm availability in the current studio and on your plan before designing around it.

Set up and preview the layouts
- Plan the segment. Decide whether it is a panel conversation, two-person interview, single-speaker explanation, or screen share.
- Choose the matching composition. Select a group, split, spotlight, or presenter-and-content layout. If participant count can change, consider a dynamic grid.
- Enable guest names. Turn on participant display names and add headlines only when role context is useful.
- Preview with the expected panel size. Check the complete output frame, not just the studio preview at a small size. Look for clipped names, crowded faces, and elements that compete with the shared material.
- Prepare a second layout. Make an alternate for screen sharing or a change in who is speaking, so the production can adapt without rebuilding the scene midstream.
- Check overlays against the plan. If you need to resize or reposition static overlays, verify current plan availability in the studio.
Check participant and camera-slot limits
StreamYard’s help pages publish plan-specific participant and camera-slot limits. These are vendor-stated product limits, not recommendations for an ideal panel size; verify them against the current plan details before scheduling a large event.

StreamYard’s layout documentation also lists six camera slots on free plans and up to 10 on paid plans; when a dynamic grid is present, it gives corresponding maximums of five and nine. It says users may create eight custom layouts across plans. The documentation’s publication date is not stated, so check the current studio and plan information for changes.

Fix common overlay problems before going live
- A name is hard to read: Shorten it, increase text size, or improve contrast. Check it in the full output frame rather than judging it only in the editing controls.
- The grid feels crowded: Remove optional headlines and decorative elements, then preview again with the expected participant count. Consider a spotlight view for the segment where one speaker leads.
- A graphic covers a face or slide: Move or resize the overlay if your studio and plan support it; otherwise, simplify the graphic or use a layout with more clear space.
- The presenter disappears during a share: Switch to a picture-in-picture or other presenter-and-content arrangement, if available, and confirm that the shared material remains legible.
- The layout no longer suits the conversation: Prepare an alternate scene in advance for a new speaker or a transition to screen sharing.
What these layout choices can—and cannot—promise
These controls can help organize a multi-guest frame and identify who is speaking. They do not establish that a particular design increases watch time, comprehension, or engagement; choose based on the needs of the segment and check the result at the intended viewing size.
