Stop Windows Date and Time From Losing Sync: What to Check

A Windows clock that keeps losing sync can point to a wrong time-zone setting, blocked network time, management policy, or a hardware-clock issue. Here’s how to narrow it down safely.

If Windows keeps losing date-and-time sync, start at Settings > Time & language > Date & time and check Set time automatically. A wrong time zone is a separate problem: check Time zone or Set time zone automatically independently. If those settings are right, the cause may involve Windows Time, network access to a time server, or management policy—not necessarily a failed battery.

Is the clock wrong, or only the time zone?

First compare the displayed time with the correct local time. If it is off by minutes or keeps drifting, investigate clock synchronization. If it is consistently off by a whole local-time offset, the time zone may be wrong even though the clock is synchronizing.

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Confirm that Set time automatically is on. Then inspect the Time zone setting separately; you can select a zone manually or use Set time zone automatically where available. Automatic time-zone selection may depend on location settings, so a wrong zone alone does not show that internet time sync has failed. See Microsoft’s Windows date, time, and time-zone settings guidance.

What happens when you try to sync?

If the Date & time page shows a Sync now button, select it. Note whether the clock corrects, an error appears, or nothing changes. Also note the pattern afterward: does it drift gradually, fail to sync immediately, or reset after the computer is shut down? These observations help narrow the next check, but none proves a particular cause by itself.

Could Windows Time or the network be blocking sync?

Windows Time, also called W32Time, obtains time samples from configured sources and adjusts the system clock. Microsoft says a computer that is not joined to a domain is configured by default to use time.windows.com; domain-joined computers generally follow their domain’s time hierarchy. The configured source can differ, especially on managed devices. Microsoft explains how the Windows Time service works.

Windows time synchronization uses NTP over UDP port 123. A restrictive firewall, VPN, network rule, or unavailable time source can prevent the PC from reaching its configured server. Check that the computer has internet access and consider whether a firewall or VPN is active. If this is a work- or school-managed PC, ask IT to check its time-source configuration and policy before changing it; a centrally managed setting may override local choices. Microsoft’s Windows Time tools documentation covers W32Time, its configuration, and the w32tm diagnostic tool.

Using w32tm locally requires administrator privileges. It can help diagnose Windows Time, but changing a time source or reconfiguring the service is not the right first step on a managed computer. Start with the visible Settings controls and network access; involve an administrator when policy or permissions are involved.

Which symptom points to the next check?

Observed pattern What to check next
Only the local offset is wrong Check the time zone and automatic time-zone setting, not just automatic clock sync.
Sync fails immediately Check internet access, VPN or firewall restrictions, and access to the configured time source; on a managed PC, contact IT.
The clock syncs, then gradually drifts Check whether synchronization continues to work and whether network conditions or hardware-clock accuracy may be affecting it.
The date or time reverts after shutdown or loss of power Consider a hardware-clock issue and seek diagnosis appropriate to the PC model; this symptom alone does not confirm a depleted battery.
The clock jumps back to a previous date and time There is a documented, specific Windows scenario involving stale Secure Time Seeding data. Check whether that scenario fits before attempting advanced remediation.

When is a hardware problem plausible?

Microsoft lists hardware-clock accuracy among factors that can affect synchronization. If the date or time is lost specifically while the PC is off or disconnected from power, hardware inspection may be appropriate. That behavior does not by itself establish that the CMOS/RTC battery is depleted, and the correct repair depends on the computer’s model and serviceability.

What if Windows reverts to an earlier date and time?

Microsoft documents a particular reversion problem in which stale Secure Time Seeding information can be used. It is a specific software scenario, not a general explanation for every clock that loses sync. The applicable guidance includes reconnecting the computer to the internet and more advanced Windows Time remediation. Follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps for a computer clock that resets to a previous date and time only if the observed behavior matches. Avoid registry edits unless the documented case calls for them and you understand the risk: Microsoft warns that incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems.
