Activation Lock is Apple’s ownership protection for devices linked to Find My. To remove it legitimately, the Apple Account holder must authenticate on the device or remove it from their account; a used-device buyer should ask the previous owner to do that before completing the purchase. Erasing a device alone does not let a buyer bypass another person’s account.
What “iCloud lock” means
“iCloud lock” is the informal name people often use for Activation Lock. Apple describes it as an Apple Account and Find My protection—not an ordinary screen passcode lock. When a device is protected, activation can require the Apple Account and password used to set it up, or the device passcode if the screen offers that option. Apple’s current instructions are in its Activation Lock guidance.

The right resolution depends on whose account is linked, whether you can access that account, whether the device is available or online, and what kind of device or component is locked.
If it’s your device, use the linked account or passcode
- At the Activation Lock prompt, enter the Apple Account and password used to set up the device, or its passcode if that option is shown.
- If you cannot remember the account, try the email address or phone number you regularly use for Apple services. Use Apple’s account-finding and password-recovery guidance if you need to identify the account or reset its password.
- If the device belongs to a school or business, contact that organization’s IT department or manager; the organization may control the account or device management.
If you own the device but cannot recover access to the linked account, Apple lets you start an Activation Lock support request with proof-of-purchase documentation. This is a request for assistance, not a promise that Apple will approve removal.

If your device is offline but still in your account
For an offline device that remains linked to your own account, Apple’s procedure allows you to sign in to iCloud Find Devices, select the device, and choose “Remove This Device.” If you sold or gave away a device before turning off Find My, Apple also describes remotely erasing it and then removing it from the account. The available steps depend on the device’s state and whether it is online, so follow the current prompts in Apple’s Find My and iCloud instructions.
Apple’s iCloud guide says that removing an offline device removes Activation Lock immediately, while the device may remain visible in Find My for 30 days. If it comes online after that period while still signed in or paired, it can reappear and Activation Lock can be enabled again. Check Apple’s live instructions before relying on this timing, which may change.

If you bought an iPhone or iPad used
Start setup and pay attention to whether it asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account. If it does, the device is still linked to that account: stop and ask the seller to enter their credentials or remove the device from their account. Do not rely on a promise that the seller will unlock it later.
Apple’s buyer guidance says, “A device is ready for you to use when you see the Hello screen.” It also warns, “Don’t take ownership of any used iPhone or iPad if it’s protected by Activation Lock.” See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance for iPhone and iPad.

If you are selling, gifting, or trading in an iPhone or iPad
Prepare the device through Apple’s owner process: remove personal information and erase it. Apple says that erasing an iPhone or iPad through these steps turns off Find My and Activation Lock. If the erase flow presents eSIM options, choose whether to erase the eSIM profile as appropriate for your transfer. Erasing the device does not delete content stored in iCloud. Follow Apple’s steps to prepare an iPhone or iPad for sale, trade-in, or transfer.
Apple Watch: check pairing and the cellular plan
For a used Apple Watch, ask the previous owner to unpair it and remove Activation Lock. If possible, try pairing it with your iPhone; a request for the former owner’s Apple Account means the lock remains. For a cellular model, also confirm that the previous owner removed any active mobile plan.

When selling or giving away a watch, unpair it using the paired iPhone, remove its cellular plan if applicable, and enter the Apple Account password when prompted to turn off Activation Lock. If the watch has already been handed over, Apple describes remote erase and removal steps in its Apple Watch buyer and seller guidance.

A repair can involve a component linked to someone else’s Apple Account, which is distinct from a whole-device Activation Lock screen. Apple’s guidance on Activation Lock for previously used parts says the part may need to be unlocked through Repair Assistant or by having its account holder remove the lock. If it is tied to another person’s account, contact that person or the seller and ask them to remove the part’s lock and Lost Mode.

Apple says it cannot remove Activation Lock for previously used parts. A locked part may not work as expected or may lack privacy, security, or safety-critical features; it is ineligible for Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare service, and the device cannot be traded in while the part remains locked. The appropriate process depends on the component and Apple’s repair flow.
Quick Recap
Choose the route that matches your situation
- Your account is linked and you have the device: authenticate with the account credentials or passcode offered on screen; recover the account if needed.
- Your account is linked but the device is offline or no longer with you: use Apple’s Find Devices removal or remote erase-and-remove instructions that match its state.
- A former owner’s account is linked: ask that owner to remove the device or component from their account. A buyer cannot substitute an erase for the owner’s authorization.
- A school or business controls the device: contact its IT department or manager.
- You own the device but cannot regain account access: request Apple support and provide proof of purchase; approval is not guaranteed.
