If Nextcloud is throttling or blocking legitimate logins while your server sits behind a reverse proxy, check which client IP Nextcloud sees. When every request appears to come from the proxy, configure that proxy in trusted_proxies and set forwarded_for_headers to the header it actually sends. Keep brute-force protection enabled; first verify the cause in the logs.
Why a reverse proxy can trigger a Nextcloud lockout
A reverse proxy may terminate TLS or forward requests to your Nextcloud server. At the network level, Nextcloud then sees the proxy as the immediate peer. To identify the original visitor, Nextcloud must trust the proxy and read the client address from a forwarded header supplied by that proxy.

Nextcloud’s brute-force protection is IP-based. If users’ requests all appear to come from one proxy address, legitimate activity can be associated with that shared IP and throttled or blocked. This is a plausible cause of a lockout, not proof that every denied login has the same cause; confirm the detected address and relevant log entries first.
How to confirm whether proxy handling is the problem
- Map the connection path. Identify whether Nextcloud is behind a reverse proxy or load balancer, and determine the address Nextcloud sees as the connecting peer. Include every proxy that actually connects to Nextcloud.
- Review the Nextcloud log. Look for brute-force, throttling, or blocked-IP entries and note the IP address recorded. If more detail is needed, the administration manual recommends temporarily setting the log level to
1for troubleshooting; restore the previous level when finished. - Compare the logged IP with the topology. If requests from different visitors are all recorded under the proxy’s address, inspect both the trusted-proxy list and the forwarded client-IP header setting. If the logged address is the visitor’s expected IP, investigate other causes rather than assuming a proxy mismatch.
The administration manual describes requests being slowed for up to 24 hours after brute-force protection is triggered and, in extreme cases, access being prevented for up to 30 minutes from a problematic IP. These are documented upper limits, not a prediction of how long a particular login denial will last. The manual also notes that attempts-history entries expire after 48 hours.

Configure the proxy trust boundary
Nextcloud requires administrators to explicitly define which proxy servers it trusts. Its reverse-proxy documentation explains that when the connecting address matches a configured proxy, Nextcloud uses the header named in forwarded_for_headers to determine the client IP. The configuration sample is available in the server configuration parameters reference.
- Set
trusted_proxiesto the real proxy addresses. Nextcloud accepts individual IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and CIDR ranges. Use only the addresses or ranges that genuinely connect to your Nextcloud server; do not copy an illustrative address from a documentation example as if it applied to your network. - Match
forwarded_for_headersto your proxy. Identify the header your trusted proxy actually uses to pass the original client IP, then configure Nextcloud to read that header. A header-name mismatch can leave Nextcloud with the proxy’s address instead of the visitor’s. - Verify the result in the logs. After changing the configuration, confirm that requests are attributed to the expected client IPs and that the relevant brute-force entries no longer collapse different visitors into the proxy’s address.
Trust is a security boundary: Nextcloud relies on data supplied by trusted proxies to recover the original client IP. Trusting an address too broadly, or trusting a proxy that is not under your control, can undermine that identification. Secure the proxies and keep the trusted list limited to the actual network path.

Nextcloud’s administration manual strongly discourages disabling brute-force protection, especially on publicly reachable servers. For a proxy-related nuisance trigger, fix client-IP handling rather than turning the protection off.
What to do if the logs do not show a proxy-IP mismatch
A denied login alone does not establish that brute-force protection caused the problem. Check the recorded IP and the surrounding log entries before changing proxy trust or adding an exclusion. If the IP is already the expected client address, the evidence here does not identify the reason for the denial; continue troubleshooting the applicable authentication or server issue instead of broadly trusting additional addresses.
