For an existing account, check Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping to review saved payment methods. But there is no universal setting that prevents every billing prompt: an unpaid purchase, Family Sharing, or a payment method required for a particular download may need attention first.
Start with the exact alert. If it says “billing problem with a previous purchase” or “verification required,” Apple says the account has an unpaid balance. Resolve that before treating the message as a routine request to add payment details.

Choose the steps that match your situation

If you are creating an Apple Account
Follow the App Store account-creation flow and select None when asked for a payment method, if the option is shown. This avoids adding a payment method during setup; it does not mean that later purchases are free. Apple says it will not charge you until you make a purchase.

If None is not offered, the account or flow may have a condition that requires payment details. Do not assume that changing a setting will make the option appear; check for an unpaid balance or another account-specific requirement first.
If you already have an Apple Account
- On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap [your name] > Payment & Shipping.
- Review the listed payment methods. Update an expired or incorrect method, or remove one if the account allows it.
Removing a saved method is not a guaranteed way to stop future prompts. Apple may require a payment method for some free app downloads or updates, and account conditions can prevent removal. If you cannot remove a method, check the billing alert and Family Sharing status before repeatedly trying the same step.

If Apple reports a billing problem or verification requirement
Look in Purchase History for an order labeled Amount You Owe. Apple says an unpaid balance can prevent purchases, free app downloads, and subscription use until it is paid.
Ways to pay an unpaid order
- Retry the current payment method.
- Add a valid payment method and use it to pay the balance.
- Where available, redeem an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card, add the credit to your Apple Account, and apply it to the unpaid order. Gift cards are not available in every country or region.
A gift card is relevant to a confirmed unpaid order; buying or redeeming one does not generally turn off ordinary billing prompts. If you cannot settle the balance, contact Apple Support.

If you use Family Sharing
When Purchase Sharing is on, the family organizer’s payment method is generally charged for family purchases unless the person making the purchase has a valid payment method. If you are not the organizer, ask them to check the payment method and any unpaid order associated with the family purchase.
Turning off Purchase Sharing changes how the family shares individual purchases. Check Apple’s Family Sharing instructions and consider that effect before changing the setting just to avoid a payment prompt.

If your payment method is not accepted or verified
- Make sure the method is accepted for the country or region set on your Apple Account. Apple’s payment-method list by country or region explains regional availability.
- Check that the name and billing address entered for the Apple Account match the records held by your bank or other financial institution.
- Complete any verification requested by the bank or issuer. If verification still fails, contact that institution.
Changing your Apple Account’s country or region is not a casual workaround: payment methods must correspond to the account’s region, and changing regions can affect account use.
When to contact Apple or your financial institution
Contact Apple Support if an unpaid balance remains unresolved or you cannot determine how to pay it. Contact your bank or payment provider if Apple accepts the method for your region but the institution’s verification continues to fail.
